Tracing Lost mobile phones

Guys... Have u lost ur mobile phone??? Did u report the matter to the police???

I have heard that police finds out the lost mobile phone by the phones IMEI number which registers with the service provider through the SIM cards...

Can someone share some light on this...

I have a former colleague who lost his mobile and reported the matter to the Police. After more or less a year passed he received a call from the Police and been told that his mobile had been found.
