I was out this afternoon at one of the malls with my sister, and as we were crossing the parking we saw an awful scene, one maid was locked in a car, engine off,all windows closed!!! in this heat, the family she works for sees that absolutely acceptable, neither to take her in,nor to leave her at home,to rest.NO THEY TAKE HER OUT LOCK HER IN THE CAR WHILE THEY SHOP!!!!!i wanted to call the police but my sister reminded me that we r foreigners and this family could or 100% is local and we might get insulted in some way.
I chickened......and now i cant sleep with guilt.what if she dies like the kid in UAE from the heat.
shouldnt there be a minimum protection for maids here.Mind u many times i see local families eating at restaurants with their poor maids watching at a nearby table, and i dont mean at maxim its places like kfc.
i am a muslim and i am extremely offended by what some muslims do,this is not islam.

I may be wrong, but that old chestnut 'what would you do if you were locked in the car and only had a hammer with you' springs to mind.

I think the answer is that you pull up the lock knob thingie on the door sill, to open it, and thus get out.

Maybe doesn't work on all cars ...

My apologies. It just shocks me that you did nothing about it even thought you thought she was locked inside. It reminded me an earlier post about a woman who had been raped and there were cars passing by and nobody did nothing to help.

I find that kind of thing very upsetting and I tend to believe that if you see someone in such a dangerous situation and do nothing, you are as guilty as the abuser himself.

So if your story it´s true, I hope you have learnt from it, and next time you act according to your principles.

Your response to my post is very confusing.

Why did you feel guilty UNTIL you read my post?? "She was enjoying a sauna", what's that about???

Did you not read what I wrote? My concern wasn't that the maid didn't have water ... I was concerned at your lack of actions, you did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help her situation

You thought she was locked in and still walked on by.

The windows in the car, fair enough she may not know how to "roll" sorry "wind" them down (I know modern cars don't have the rolling action anymore to get them down, but I am stuck in the 80's still with my terminology) my point was you didn't do anything. That is what angered me. You didn't even try.

(By the way, some cars you have 3 minutes or so when you can still use the windows when engine is off ... but again, this is not my actual point)

You posted on here and expatwoman about the situation (with responses back to your post saying for you to not worry), this is why I had to say something, you should worry, you should have felt bad.

A question for you to ponder, if it was reported in the paper that a housemaid died in locked car in carpark, would you have posted that you saw it but did nothing????

As for your example of not saying anything to the employer of a maid sitting alone in a restaurant, while I think that is bad, it is not life threatening.

By the way, I have put my neck out here in saving a maid, and I felt wonderful for doing it. She is now happily back in the Philliphines.

Your quoting religion and islam in your post is irrelevant. It is down to what is in your own heart.

I hope that you have learnt from this experience, and next time will actually do something concrete when you see somone who is in a potential life threatening situation. I do believe you have a good heart, as you were concerned ... but you must do something when you think someones life is in danger.

That is the message we should all get from this thread.

recently when I was in line at the airport, I saw a big man. Very tall and in perfect health. He was wearing the traditional white clothing, but I couldn't really tell if he was qatari or not, as not all thobe wearing people are qataris. He had a maid with him. Definately not a wife. It was not just her clothing, but the expression on her face. She looked empty, without any hope. But that may just be speculation on my part.

The thing is, after asking the maid to give him their passports (she was carrying everything), he ordered her to lift up the luggage onto the conveyer belt. Anyone watching could see she had to struggle. Each bag was huge and certainly looked heavy. He just watched her. In the end the staff had to come to her help.

He didn't even bat an eye.

So, he's travelling with his slave, er sorry, his maid and I guess it's part of her job to help him?!

I know this sounds contradicting, but I don't mean to generalize. This was one isolated incident and I certainly haven't seen similar, but then again, seeing it once is enough.

That staying alive is making this whole thing up...but, please if anybody sees anything like that happening, it must be reported, we all (regardless of religion or nationality) have a moral responsability of helping somebody when we feel that their lifes are put in danger...and locking somebody inside a car, under the heat and with no AC is a life threatening situation!

By staying alive• 4 Jun 2007 20:24
staying alive

i have had a car long enough to know if the ac is on or not.i wrote the ENGINE OFF so can some of u explain to me how i knew the ac was off without a running engine.

jahlee,i was guilty till i read yr post, coz "Regardless if the maid was left in the car of her own accord, or could get out of the car etc. ... you actually thought she was being left in the car in that heat and did NOTHING about it"well if she was enjoying a sauna, why should i even bother.

secondly if u have been here long enough u would know that most of these maids come from villages so i dont think, and excuse my assumptions, that the maid i saw would know she could unlock herself, which takes me to my next point, get her water....thats yr issue,if she is freaking locked and cant get out of a locked car THAT ISNT RUNNING how will she roll the windows ?ROLL ?

Neither the car i drive nor the Cadillac that she was in has manual windows, and i am sure i wont smash that glass!!!! I know how much it costs.

I suggest u research when u call the authorities and u get in trouble with a local, guess on who's side the LOCAL police r?

A friend of mine had a maid who HIT a baby when the maid was taken to the police, these were my friends options, take the maid back, send the maid to her country OR take her to the agency maybe someone will take her.no legal action was taken. So pls tell me when i call the police and tell them this, how long will i wait for them, they r busy reporting road accidents.

Next time u see a maid at a restaurant watching her sponsers eat,U go talk to them, and do let me know how they respond.

Here's something I saw today.

At megamart (the center), I was walking towards my car and I saw this guy walking towards his car with an indian/asian worker dragging the trolley. So the indian guy goes in a different direction than the other guy. The guy starts yelling at and abusing the indian so badly, calling him an idiot, an dumbass, a donkey, etc. just cause he went the other way!! I felt so mad, what gives this man to mistreat someone less fortunate like that just because he made a simple mistake of dragging the trolley the other way!!! So yeah that's my rant for the day.

You should have called the police or AT LEAST spoke to the maid to make sure she was ok. You could have even brought her a couple of bottles of water maybe?? (I am sure she could have got out of the car, wound down a window ... even if child locked, the front drivers door should still be able to be opened from the inside.

But to do NOTHING at all ......... knowing that you knew recently a child had died by being locked in a car during the heat.

Your following comment angered me;

"we r foreigners and this family could or 100% is local and we might get insulted in some way"

Basically you would rather not be insulted instead of helping someone.

Regardless if the maid was left in the car of her own accord, or could get out of the car etc. ... you actually thought she was being left in the car in that heat and did NOTHING about it.

You SHOULD feel guilty.

How are maids that are treated badly going to be protected if no-one does or reports anything about it!!

Your thread angered me, but not just at the people who left her but at your attitude aswell.

You ended with "I am a muslim and i am extremely offended by what some muslims do,this is not islamm" but isn't not doing anything about the situation at all not a good thing aswell??

Regardless of being muslim, christian, hindi, blah blah blah .... we are all HUMANS.

That's my rant for the day ... but boy this upset me.

I just get really annoyed when I hear expats say they 'hate all Arabs' and think they are all rich and arrogant.

When asked if they have seen the rest of the region they say no, I don't want to after being here. It is frustrating as I have found that Arabs are the sweetest, most genuine people I have come across.

I know exactly what Popeye is talking about. He is one of the millions of Arabs out there who treat people with dignity and respect and finds it so offensive when he sees 'other Muslims' treat others with no compassion....I hear it from Arabs all the time!

By popeye• 4 Jun 2007 00:36

Didn't mean all Arabs. It takes one incident and all the publicity to go with it to tarnish the reputation of a people. I hope this does not! The vast majority of arabs I have met would not behave like this. It's not an Arab thing!

Welcome to today's world, whether in Qatar or elsewhere, slavery is going on. It's really sad how maids, drivers, labour workers, etc are treated by the some of the more fortunate. I've seen so much incidents when the maids were ill-treated and it pissed me off but there was nothing I could do. Don't feel about it, it wasn't ur fault and hopefully the maid is alright, but next time call the cops or something. It's about time we start taking action to stop all this.

i remember wen i was a kid, there was an epidemic in india and wen my neighbors india made returned after her vacations, this man sprayed 2 full bottles of pif paf on her before he let her enter the villa !!!! that was somewer around 1994 and the place was dubai..!!

all the arabs in the forum could set an example by showing your friends, relatives and neighbours everyone how you could treat ur servants in a poilte way.. live it and show guys.. they are maids just beacause they don't have money.. just because they have a family back home who entirely depends on them to make both ends meet.. wat if we wer poor..? put ourselves in their shoes.

i don't know if it's true.. but i've heard that they are dealt very cruelly inside the house too..

Prophet said that a lady was in hell because she tied her cat for so many days without feeding it . so if we misbehave with a cat and end up in hell.. wat about how we treat humans worse than that..? nobody becomes muslim by his name.. it's by his deed and fearness of God that he becomes a muslim.

It is not only acceptable, it is the deed of the inhuman. They did not feel the heat of the sun in the few moments that they walk from the parking to the mall gate? What do they have in mind if they got one [maybe the heat take that away]. Show mercy for those poor people in this earth to let god mercy come from heavens. Why are you taking them with you while you are not going to let them in? Why do you take them when you go to eat and let them there looking at you?

If my cat come to me while eating, she is not hungry and I'm like 99% sure that it won't eat what am i going to offer her. I just can't help it, but to put some food for her knowing that she will not eat it. Show some mercy for those humans, you will look for a shaded place to park your car because you are afraid of the heat when you back or because you are afraid that the paint of the car will get some damage. So how about locking a human in that car and go shopping. How can you enjoy eating in there or shopping while locking someone there? What kind of ... Monster you are to do that?

I want just to ask these people something, after that they can lock what ever in those cars. If they can stay outside the car for the same time that they are keeping there maid inside it, they can lock her inside. I know that this challenge does not make sense because this should never happened, but I'm really so upset and sad about this incident.

One more thing, I don't blame you for not calling the police, but next time you gotta call them and ask them what to do. If you can' again do it, just call someone who can deal with it and let them call the police.

The other day, I was having lunch at a newly opened cafe in villagio, and I couldn't help notice this girl sitting by herself during the whole time we had lunch and coffee. She had her back to us so at first I just assumed she was waiting for a friend to show up but as we were ordering coffee and dessert, I realized suddenly that she was another unfortunate maid who had to follow her employers (two 20 something abaya wearing ladies) to the mall and sit there, with nothing on her table, not even a glass of water, waiting.

I guess I should say alhamdullila these girls didn't leave their maid in the car. But of course, heaven forbid they offer her a drink!!
