OMG. I can't help but think that anyone planning to move to Doha would be shocked to see this!

What does this video say about how the country treats foreigners? Was anyone else shocked by this video?

@ genesis, spot on mate...i've said it before on the NUMEROUS threads on QL about the same topic...give these single Asians a REAL alternative, like Dubai has & THEN SEE,how many will even bother going to the malls...it's such a simple solution really & the Govt. is not short of funds to build such venues for this category of people...yes Barwa village is coming up & all that is fine but when will actually be completed, occupied, begin functioning fully & actually start drawing those single(or not) Asians?...This should've been thought of,planned & executed YEARS ago...until then, the discrimination is going to continue...& the buck will not stop with anyone...mall management is going to say that local & expat families asked for it to be able to shop in peace...those local & expat families are going to say the Asians stare & generally make them feel uncomfortable...the Asians are going to say they need some venue for entertainment & in the abscence of ANYTHING else, they consider coming to the mall & staring/letching @ expat women while they shop,entertainment...everyone involved here has a valid point...& to come full circle, the only REAL option is to provide these guys with an alternative...

With all due respect, there seems to be a view held by MANY,BOTH locals & expats that these poor Asian labourers/low paid office workers are in some way less human than the rest of us "privileged ones" & don't deserve any entertainment or relaxation in return for the hours they slog all week in this most brutal & extreme of global environments literally building this country brick by brick...now why is that so?...Especially since Qatar considers "human rights" so high up on it's agenda...& correct me if i'm wrong but this blatant discrimination is not only racist in nature,it is also a violation of a an individual's basic human rights,to be denied access to a public retail venue based on one's race...or does the rule not apply @ home???...

If is only about race then i have nothing to say more :(((

Islam forbids to look down on people, islam is forbidding slavery. But to see all such things in an Islamic country is heart breaking and disappointing.

If it helps, my husband was turned away, and he is obviously not Asian...but could be mistaken for being Arabic. Oh, and salary wise, he most certainly falls in the category of the target audience.

So, why did that happen?

By missmoneypenny• 11 Oct 2010 18:03

A colleague of mine who is on around 18,000 a month was turned away for being Indian. This is not about who can afford what. This is about race. Plain and simple.

I know some singles/bachelors who earn way more than QR2500 but are not allowed to enter these malls. They are not allowed simply because they're asians.

"if you get it cheaper we will refund 10 times the amount".... is just to fool the masses they will never refund.

This ban is not for singles or bachelors (word used here). It's about workers.

They simply want to keep out the non-customer worker hordes out of the nice places so families and other couples and shoppers can enjoy their shopping.

As much as i also think this is humiliating, i also think there is a good reason behind this ban.

I don't think there is a big difference between friday and other days. They wouldn't let them in anyday. Since they work all other days it looks like the rule applies to fridays only.

People earning 1500-2500QR/month are not their target customers.

ok, I am really curious now...WHAT happens in those places????

And no, I will not go there to see for myself...if what ever it is warrants for those people to be banned from malls, I shall not submit myself to it....so please , DO tell!

I have been to Al-Khor on a Friday with my family and can understand what you're trying to say.

I agree that both expats and locals have complained about singles being allowed in at the weekend. I also believe that many complain , but would not boycott the malls at the weekend.

Having lived and worked in Saudi, I do not agree with the concept , but can put up with family day.

What I do have issue with is the blatant discrimination based on race. If you're going to ban singles, then ban them all - as in Saudi.

Dubai has many different entertainment options stretched all over the city, not to mention the neighboring other Emirates. In Qatar most of the population concentrated in Doha, and as you can witness daily the current public facilities are not adequate to serve the whole community

Docjay Degree holders for labour works? are you alright?

genesis ever been to Dubai and other GCC countries?

By missmoneypenny• 11 Oct 2010 15:58
missmoneypenny

By degree-holder do you mean Bachelors Degree? To be a cleaner or builder?

You're right, racism is everywhere. But history shows that in order for change to happen it takes 1) people that believe things can be different, and 2) people to stand up and say we won't tolerate it.

Accept the pain? I'm glad that a few people throughout history disagreed with that approach.

By genesis• 11 Oct 2010 15:49
genesis

i can't believe how some of you think. In Country with more than half of the population are bachelors, and with very limited entertainment venues at the moment to serve the public . How would the authority maintain security?

Do you even know what happens in industrial Area ( whether in Doha or Ras Laffan) every day?

By anonymous• 11 Oct 2010 15:46
anonymous

this will not happen if they admit only genuine degree holder and limit of people they hire here in doha, but no offense, some they like idiots people to hire because of low salary they given to them, racism is everywhere in the world,so what you gonna do people`s,accept the pain, not guts no pain...

As far as i know, Qatar Security service company (HEMAYA) will soon recruit qatari guards at the malls to properly enforce the family day policy on all bachelors. As been discussed many times before, this is a security issue. for those of you who shout racism, why don't you go mingle with those bachelors in industrial area on a Friday afternoon. The shopping malls management ( whom by the way are expatriates) have not undergone this policy in the first place if it wasn't for the many complains from both local and expatriates families

well missmoneypenny, that is not going to happen...and that is known. Simple as that.

Look, even those who actually are treated as per your video, they are desperate to come here...masses of them!

Now, you would think that once the word spreads they would stay away, but no, they come here!

And those who are thinking of human rights, well, money overrides that, obviously.

So, there you have it....

By missmoneypenny• 11 Oct 2010 15:02

Ridiculous......... Haa and they wanna host the worldcup 2022. They will make some guards stand in front of the stadium and restrict us. Lot of complications for a family visa status and rent is too high for an average earning person. They just follow the saying "SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST"

Miss moneypenny, do you really think that people overseas care? Maybe some of those who are considering to work in Qatar, although, as we can see, money talks, the others...well.

There have been plenty of documentaries etc. about this and other things in the newspapers and on tv overseas...and?

By missmoneypenny• 11 Oct 2010 14:19
missmoneypenny

Yes it's sad that the more we experience this blatant disregard for basic human rights first-hand, the less shocked (and therefore more complacent) we become! The guard in the video doesn't even bother to dress it up by saying it's a family day thing - he just says it exactly how it is!

Friends overseas would be horrified when they see that a "forward-thinking" country built on the backs of expats is treating foreigners this way. I can only hope that one day.........
