Unwed mothers in Qatar face tough choices

Unwed mothers in Qatar face tough choices

shabina921

Hey all, thought this story about pregnant, unmarried women in Qatar might be of interest.

Anne (not her real name) is almost out of options. The 40-year-old Filipina has been laying low in Doha after giving birth to her daughter at home in Qatar last winter.

Sharing her story with Doha News, the former domestic worker said that despite her best efforts, she knows all roads will eventually lead to jail.

When Anne turns herself in, she will become one of the nearly 100 expat women a year who are arrested and jailed in Qatar for giving birth to a baby out of wedlock...

Thelonius, don't be such a fool and too racist. No one have given you the rights to insult anyone we are all know that all people from different nationalities experiencing/doing the same the only difference is they can immediately find solution on it against their culture, will and laws.

I do agree with you LLR, i can also see it with my own 2 eyes. But my point is, in the article which is being linked here in the OP, there are also Nepalese and Indians!

How can a Great Thelonius say that Filipinas are extremely stupid? And he meant ALL? Have he met us all here?

Janney Good point, many other nationalities also do the same, the reason why only Philippines highlighted in the main post is cuz some of them can't afford to fly back just to have some paper works done and some of these girl try to date a man who is either already married or have no plans for long term relationship, at the end they are just left alone to deal with the cost and legal risk. I have even met some western men who keep them in home and pay monthly salaries.

The authorities need to look into this issue in a very humane way and if they cannot handle it they could bring in the people who are good at handling this type of cases. Putting them in jail is not the answer but working togather with their embasssies and other such organizations they could bring this cases to a happy and just solution for all concerned. Locking them up is just prolonging and extending the confusion.

Agree with you Marco, Hope is what one has when he say 100% espcially while having or not having a baby, there are simple methods which works upto 72 hours and for some even 10 days.

The actual problem is the negligence of the couple.

True Story: One of my friend who is Lebanese-Russian Hybrid had the same issue. She had a very nice New Year Party and drunk and was picked up by some guy. She found it after few days but they both discussed it and sorted it out by flying back to Russia for few days. Now they both are legally binded.

Conclusion: Either on road or bed, driving reckless is always risky .

Lets face it, it is a stupid law and it costs the country money to keep these peoples and their babies in jail. If it is against the law then deport them.

As part of modern slavery some of these people have no choice, they get pregnant and want to leave but their sponsors deny them an exit visa. How uncivilised.

LLR:Some birth control methods work better than others, but Nad is right, there's no 100% protection from getting pregnant. The only 100% protection is abstinence.

Human rights violations - are the women Muslim and therefore subject to Islamic law? Were they raped or was there sex trafficking involved? Was the father sought for punishment? And I just love the glowing report of how wonderful the jail is!

Not only jail the mother , jail the father of the baby as well , of wedlock they know the consequence , but the problem is the father had plan for nine months to escape and succeeded while the mother plan for nine months where to brought out the baby she can't go home she had other family. Stupid self made predicament.

I agree that jail for such a "crime" is harsh and serves no purpose. However, in this case, she had choices along the way and seemed bent on getting herself into this predicament.

It is good to abide by the Laws of the Land. I think most of these babies are by accidents not by a proper intention to have baby and no husband. Few minutes of unprotected pleasure becomes lifelong pain. Very simple, go back to you country for few days and get marry and get a damn paper, as simple as that. It is not a Human Right Violation, it is the Human Negligence to the available options ( a box of condoms, a vacation to have baby and get marry in your country).
