Up to 5% of Qatar’s population, aged 18-60 years, is addicted to either alcohol or drugs, a Supreme Council of Health official said yesterday

“Between 3 to 5% of Qatar’s population is addicted to either alcohol or drugs, which is why we want to establish the Drug Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in order to tackle the problem head on,” Supreme Council of Health’s Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre medical director Dr Mounir Soussi told a press conference.

The press conference was held to welcome two Italian delegations from San Patrignano Community and University of Uninettuno, who are in Qatar for collaborations with the council on distance/e-learning education on treating addiction.

According to Soussi, the addiction figure in Qatar is comparable to elsewhere in the region. “The rate of addiction seen here is similar to other countries within the Gulf and Arab region. And mostly adults are those found addicted to alcohol while young people tend to abuse substances such as vitamins,” he said.

What do you think are the reasons and how can it be avoided or reduced.

Very interesting to note that just one store selling the drinks can get so many guys addicted. What about the lots of other folks who are forcefully kept away from getting addicted. Their wives and parents back home must be thankful to QDC for not allowing this guys to have a sip of the brew

Are you referring to Captagon?

I think they're referring to a "vitamin" cocktail that basically has the same effects as amphetamines. It's a big problem amongst locals in the UAE.

According to the link above (from the Gulf Times):

"young people tend to abuse substances such as vitamins"

When you read the same story in The Peninsula, you are told:

"youngsters were addicted to amphetamines and cannabis"

Not even the Gulf Times can be dumb enough to confuse amphetamines and cannabis with VITAMINS. So are we to come to the conclusion that they are too afraid just report the truth - that there is a drug abuse problem in Qatar???

This is a country where they give you panadol after a c-section because they aren't allowed to give you proper pain killers.

Maybe they mean the poor laborers who drink cologne for kicks?

I don't full understand the methodology that they would have used to calculate drug dependency rates in a country where its taboo to go to the doctor and seek help.

This is a country where people don't actually believe that smoking or sheesha is bad for you, and wearing seatbelts is optional.

By Qatar's population are they including the expat population or just the locals?

They should limit the sale of alcohol only to 5 star hotels, and to a single store located in the middle of the desert.

Then it will be too hard or too expensive for people to get addicted.
