A wife who took out a £4,500 home improvement loan to pay for a hitman to kill her husband was today jailed at the Old Bailey for seven years.

But as Zoe Kenealy was being led from the dock her 51-year-old husband, Timothy, maintained he would be standing by her and had even had written to her trial judge begging for leniency on her behalf.

Mrs Kenealy, a 44-year-old care worker, wanted to get rid of her second husband because she could no longer 'bear to live with him.'

In August 2006, Kenealy, from Croydon, South London, had already started an relationship with next door neighbour Lee Waite, 31, who lived next door with his pregnant wife Marie.

The couple later claimed they did not have full sex but would exchange sexually explicit text messages and meet for drinks in a local pub.

Weeks later, Kenealy asked Waite if he could arrange to have her husband killed as he had previously claimed to know gangsters.

Kenealy was arrested when her own mother called police after she tried to borrow more money from family members to fund the hit.

The judge praised members of her family for having the courage to make the 'very difficult decision' to call in police.

Despite her actions her husband wrote to the judge begging him to give his wife a light sentence.

' I asked the judge to be kind,' he said.

' When I exchanged wedding vows I meant every word - for richer for poorer, till death do us part.

'But little did I know those words would came back to haunt me and land the love of my life in jail.'
