Weired Doha ZOO Experience

By Rizks

Friends,

Just wanted 2 share some thoughts about my experience on my visit to Zoo yesterday. Oh Goosh !! it was really horrible and painful seein the poor animals surviving out there. In one instant i had seen the cage for the monkeys, to my surprise i saw one small infant money dead lying on the ground near a big money. Don't know exactly what the big money was collecting something from the dead infant and eating..... it was really shocking experience for me.

As now a dayz the climate is getting warmer, they are not given cool water supply for drinking, no wonder i saw how that big Chimpanzee snatched the Ice Cream from my hand and was so happy to eat it !!

I guess the Zoo people dont really take good care and feed them properly.

We should really think about this poor animals and the autorities should take necessary action seriously.....

gumby, i agree, Doha zoo is excellent compared to the one in beijing, i remember the bear couldnt even move in his cage, that was shocking.

Its really shameful that a rich country cannot do something about the Doha zoo..

The zoo is a disgrace.  THe only worse one I have seen is in Beijing. Honestly, if it had been in my power I would have euthanised half of the animals there.

First time I went was over 4 years ago,   it was OK,  not that bad actually for Doha.    I went again just 2 months ago.   The zoo is now in a dreadful state.    Everything has deteriorated tremendously.   They have not controlled the monkey population and so  now have approximately 100 monkeys in a cage meant for 20.   It is pitiful.   The elephant habitat is closed (probably condemned) and so the elephant is chained in a very small temporary closure  very obviously in stress and rocking back and forth in his own filth.   The enclosures are obviously not cleaned very often  as there is animal waste in piles  everywhere.    The flamingo habitat has been drained  so they have no water left.  You can barely see the crocodile as the water is green, slimy and thick enough to probably walk across.   I could go on and on.    If anyone has any friends on any of the newspapers here, please encourage them to do a story on this.  (and this is from someone who refuses to own any animals cause I don't really like them).

Not a good idea, not here anway, we just need more educated people to take care of them properly.

I am sure things will improve, hope at least x

We went to the Zoo two weeks ago and I could have cried at the poor state of some of the animals.

A once magnificent Tiger, was desparately thin, pacing back and forward, following the same path again and again, growling sadly.

The panther looked like it had mange and all in all it was a quite depressing sight.

Not a good impression for new visitors, something needs to be done quickly,

Rizks I am sorry you witnessed such a sad sight.

as if the zoo has changed a lot since it opened.

It was one of (if not the) best in the Gulf and the animals were extremely well cared for.

I don't know if its that bad on the inside but it looks pretty uninviting from the outside.  My son went with a school field trip and he said it was pretty sad.

Oryx, I'd always heard "it's not that bad". I guess it depends what you're comparing it to! If you are an animal lover, you may find it depressing,as the care appears to border on, and sometimes include, neglect.

With the money this country has, they could do soooo much better!

Once again, it's a matter of priorities.

I visited the Doha Zoo for the first time about a year and a half ago, after living here 7 years.

One of the most depressing experiences of my life!!!!!!!!

I don't plan on going back.

I thought  at least Zoo animals in qatar are treated nicely. But after your post it looks like they are treated same as asian labourers.

thanks
