What are the steps involved in getting a driving license?
Sorry Guys, I know this might be one of the topics u might have seen on and on but still, I really wud like to know abt it from a person who has gone through the process very recently....
For now....
1. I have an authorised letter from the company.
2. Computer ID data sheet from the company.
3. My Docs such as PP copy & visa copy.
What next?? Is their any form I need to fill up before going to the driving school?
I have just done my medicals & waiting for finger print extraction in a day or 2.... When i call up Al Raya, he says i can take up learning only on RP but when i call up Gulf Driving school they say RP is not necessary to take up learning. Anybody pls help me & guide me through... Thanks a lot in advance.
Vishwanath...
You have 3 options minimum:
1. Take the test directly on Payment of QR 50.
2. Join for a 7 day course & the test at the end of it.
3. Take a 25 day course & the test at the end of it.
Driving in India is Right hand side drive:
1. Gear is put in opposite way.
2. Your lead driving hand is right. Here your active driving hand is left.
3. Directions & Turns are opposite way.
Also it depends where you have driven. If you have driven in Mumbai then you will be a little bit used to "lane" driving where as in Kerala the driving is "Road" based where you dirve on the centre unless some vehicle comes your way.....and then give way while passing.....beeping before overtaking almost at every vehicle(as a matter of courtsey while here it is akin to abuse)...etc The further Mirror is seldom used & not unusual to keep it closed...etc.
I suggest you take the 25 day course as even a silly mistake here could mean instant death of yourself or the person in the other vehicle as the speeds are 120 ...140 & some drive even at 180kmph. Plus the penalty here could mean you might work your entire life & still not be able to pay back.
So dont be in a hurry. Plus you also have to aquaint yourself with the rules here to pass the exam.
I know people who have taken the test 4 times & yet failed (all of who know how to drive), while I passed in 22 days flat, while I never drove a vehicle, before I came to Qatar.
Thanks a lot for all your advise..
Further, I have been driving in India for the past 4 years & my license is still active. Will this help me to take up a short term course? & moreover, me being very ambitious got a international driving license from India which is in no way acceptable here. So pls let me know if the Indian driving lic will be of help to reduce the course duration or I will hav to go thru the long haul...
Thanks once again to u all...

...there is a waiting period of 2-3 months after applying for the course...if you dont have connections (wasta).
Avoid Al Raya like a plague. I suggest you Doha Driving School which is Near the Al Shamal Road (Kheratiyat Petrol Station). Meet an Instructor of your nationality directly & discuss.
Since its on the north the streets are relatively empty so passing outside street test is a breeze.
25 days class is sufficient for those who have some knowledge of driving.
You can go for driving class without RP. But you won’t get a license without RP.
Thanks a lot Owen for the reply....
But I wud like to know if I will be able to take up the driving classes befor I get my RP. So that by the time I get my RP, I will be ready for the Test...
1. Learn the theory
2. Practice driving
3. Theory examination
4. Sober up
5. Driving test
6. Get drunk again
7. Drive crazy like the rest
