A couple has been arrested after the bodies of eight newborn babies were found in northern France, Sky News reported Wednesday.

The tiny corpses were discovered in individual plastic bags hidden around two houses in the tiny village of Villers-au-Tertre, about 35 miles from Lille.

Police were alerted after a family moved into their new home and found infant bones in the garden.

Officers traced the previous occupants, who were living less than a mile away. Sniffer dogs found the bodies of more newborn babies at the second location.

A French judicial official said the couple, both in their 40s, had been taken into custody.

Local newspaper L'Observateur Douaisis said the pair were due to appear before a magistrate Thursday morning charged with harboring dead bodies. It said the charges could be strengthened to murder as the forensic investigation continues.

The grim discovery mirrors several other cases involving French natives that have shocked the country in recent years.

A 38-year-old mother in northern France was jailed for 15 years in March for killing six of her newborn babies and stuffing their bodies into plastic garbage bags.

Another woman, Veronique Courjault, was convicted last year of murdering three of her newborn babies. Her horrified husband found two of their corpses stashed in a freezer at the home they shared in South Korea.
