Where to now for Egypt ?

After talk of democracy, the removal of an elected government via a coup and the promises of a better future , it seems Egypt will go a few step backwards..

Egypt's military is to retain key political and judicial powers in the country's new constitution, state media has confirmed, dashing hopes that this summer's army takeover was a prelude to a return to full civilian rule.

A key privilege deriving from Egypt's long period of military dictatorship, the right to try civilians in military courts, has been kept in the new constitution after a long battle within the formulating committee.

The decision, agreed by 30 votes to seven with 13 members of the committee absent or abstaining, led to a walk-out by at least one member.

In a second key move, the committee agreed that for the next eight years the defence minister would be a member of the military and that the military council would have a veto over his appointment.

The constitution is due to be complete next month, and then put to a referendum. New elections for parliament and president should follow in the first half of next year.

In regulations even more restrictive than under the rule of Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's interim president issues a law requiring notice for any gathering of more than 10 people .

Nice one :o)

It took the Egyptians just 30 years to wake up and get rid of a dictator. They can now expect to live for another 30 years before they spring up for another spring. When civilian leadership disappoint the people, they open the gates for the military to walk in.

Sadly, you are right. we deserve it. If this "claimed" no. of 33 m people were out there supporting the military rule, so all of us have to put the dirtiest shoe in our mouth and keep F"@#ing silent.

That's is normal for a people who like to be led by force, but I hope that they've learned something after this!
