Fury over cat eating festival

ANIMAL rights groups are up in arms over an annual festival in Peru that serves up hundreds of fried CATS to locals.

The 'Gastronomical Festival of the Cat' – sees townsfolk in Canete, near Lima, feast on the fluffy pets for two days.

They believe that eating cat burgers – and fried cat legs and tails – can cure bronchial disease.

It is also believed that feline meat serves as an aphrodisiac.

The cats are bred especially for this festival – which takes place at the end of September on the Day of Santa Ifigenia.

But it has generated fury among animal rights groups.

A PETA spokesman said: "“If Peruvians really eat poor old Moggy because they think his meat cures bronchitis, that’s about as bizarre as it gets, although remember that Asians eat monkey bits thinking that will cure their impotence and even Europeans butcher poor old Bessie the cow or Henny Penny the hen, because they see them as nothing more than a bit of nourishment.

“Having toured slaughterhouses for dogs in Taiwan, horses in Texas, and chickens and cows in Europe, PETA’s staff says the last thing we need to do is add yet another poor animal to the list of those being frightened and slaughtered for a taste.”

was the cat on a fried chicken diet...if so then yes on the high cholesterol..if it was living next to a vegetarian restaurant..probably not..

No way could I eat dogmeat...not knowingly at least. I know I would gag.

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to run into the ones I do,and the eyesight to tell the difference.

"horses in Texas", like people eat them there! Those are for the old and infirm horses that were to be put down anyway...they use the meat for animal food. Sometimes I worry about how far PETA goes in trying to get what they want...

As far as cat eating...can't say I would do it, nor can I condone it, but some nationalities DO eat them. Just as some eat dogs, horses, fawns, and many other animals that others consider pets.

Abu...PETA has it place, but they at times can get a bit "over zealous". There are many organization for humans tho...so why not for animal rights as well, as they can't speak for themselves as humans can.(they just need to temper it at times!)

They don't skin them. Using a specially developed technique, the kitties are 'de-furred' by blowtorch immediately after they've been knocked off.

KFF have found that this makes fur (sic) a crispier texture and a more authentic 'barbecued' taste.

In a mechanical slaugterhouse, the animals are given a wash. Thereafter, they are strapped to a conveyer belt, and their necks given a cut with a sharp blade. In case of halal meat, the blood should be drained off. Ofcourse the brain has a way to shut the gory details when the meat tastes good.

The first and last time I skinned a cat was way back in college. Never again...

On a serious note, though I really love animals and would never ever knowingly eat a cat or a dog or a monkey (and some other animals too) I think if they are bred for the purpose of being eaten, are kept in humane and happy conditions and are killed in a humane way, I don't really see a problem with it.

Wow, I stopped eating meat when I realized it does'nt grow on trees. Nothing against those who relish it but I feel the chicken knows it is going to be killed, runs frantically - and all this for our taste buds.
