There are many excellent single malt scotches and a few good blends to be found coming out of the Highlands. The Canadians have made a few brave attempts to emulate their neighbours across the Atlantic and the US boasts their Jim Beam and Jack Daniel.
However, the best whiskey has got to be the "original" that was made many years before the Scots started making theirs. Here I am referring to Irish Whiskey - and no, I am not Irish at all, in fact I am of Scottish decent! The cream of the crop has got to be Black Bush, distilled in the quaint village of Bushmill on the north coast of Ireland a few miles from the famous Giant's Causeway. Thereafter one could choose Bushmills or Jameson coming in a good second with the likes of Tullamore Dew and others following.
Irish whiskey is known for its smoothness versus Scotch. It has a distinct smell as well as taste. Next time you have the opportunity to compare the tastes, do so - you will be pleasantly surprised.
I have not mentioned the American derivatives yet as they are in a league of their own. They are generally enjoyed with a "mix" such as coke or 7-up and are rarely enjoyed as one would enjoy a traditional whiskey(y) - either neat or on the rocks. The main reason is that the American bourbon has a distinctly sharper flavour and taste on the tongue that is "softened" by adding a mix. The manufacturing process is very different indeed to that of whiskey(y) manufacture. In my humble opinion it is somewhat unfair to compare the American Bourbon to whiskies as they are not really the same type of drink. They are not as closely related as what brandy and cognac are for example.
That is the topic of another debate - which is better? Brandy or cognac? Let's hear some thought on that perhaps!

Scotch whisky, preferably a nice single malt like Laphroaig, with a dash of spring water. Certainly, no ice and no mixers - quel sacrilege!
