Who to blame for OBESITY in Qatar??

atif242
By atif242

Friends, as we all know that different FAST FOOD producing companies and Video games Industry is flourishing in today's world which are causing OBESITY in our family members especially CHILDREN
.
Children will spend hours infront of TV shows or VIDEO GAMES eating snacks, soft drinks & other sweets but will greatly ignore to play any outdoor games which involves PHYSICAL FITNESS.
Moreover, children prefer Junk Foods on Homemade dishes
.
By observing life in Qatar & your family too, can you tell who to blame for OBESITY in your children or adults and any suggestion how to curb this problem in Qatar?
.
Your welcome to highlight other factors of obesity in Qatar too if I haven't mentioned them here.

cynbob...hit the nail on the head, parents dont want the inconvenience that goes with children and there behaviour....they would rather give in. Shame some parents dont think of altenatives as cynbobs friend did....its either give in or hit them...both are wrong and a failure on part of the parents not the children

By fubar• 27 Apr 2009 10:43

This thread is hilarious...

"why are my kids little fatties?" asks the mother, as she buys a happy meal for her kid.

"I don't know", says the other mother, who enjoys the peace and quiet she gets each evening when she plonks her little porker in front of the tv for a few hours.

"I don't know whose fault it is, but it's not mine".

"I agree".

Obesity is a worldwide problem, that much is true. But, obesity is a bigger problem (no pun) in some cultures than it is on others.

Cultures which value parental discipline have lower rates of obesity. Cultures where children are all little princes and princesses breed fatties.

I have a friend that has a 3 year old. We were having dinner and the child did not want to eat and started to make a loud fuss.

The mom, my friend, told her son, "If you are not quiet I will take you to the car and we will sit in there until you're ready to behave."

The child said, looking at his mom, "But it's dark in there."

She said, "Yes, it is."

The 3 year old picked up a spoon and started to eat. No more whining or making a scene.

My friend, the mom, had obviously used this strategy before and FOLLOWED THROUGH.

Parents of children that misbehave in public do not want to be inconvenienced. It is so much easier to give in to what the child wants.

It's easily said and easily done dmigty. Anyone who uses 'embarrassment' or whatever as an excuse is not a fit parent.

If a child is brought up from an early age to understand their are limits and boundaries to what it can have and do then you wont get tantrums that are so bad parents go to jail.

And as for parents going to jail because their kids cry, I find that hard to believe. And if a kid is crying that much it's probably being abused, is hurt, or has an illness.

tallg, just a curiosity, parents need to set limits to their children? easier said than done. I remember hearing cases of parents thrown to jail because neighbors complain about crying children in their neighborhood. Parents could not lift a finger in disciplining their children because they may be arrested and a lot more! Was mere saying "you're grounded so and so" enough? Just asking!

As far as I know, lawyers are mobile. They can get from one place to another rather easily. The transportation systems are pretty incredible these days: there are planes; trains; and automobiles. There are some in Europe now, as we type.

As far as blaming Americans, we have big shoulders and we can take all the criticisms and ridicule. Any person with a working brain knows that it is "not fair." I, for one, am not bothered by that at all. I am used to it. ;)

It would appear that the americam law and courts are unable to put a stop to it, a shame when this ruins and underminds a normally well run legal system and puts it in an extemely bad light for all those in the world who see it and do not undertand why this is.

As for blaming americans for all the wrong doings on this planet....all is of course not fair...ALOT would be better and more correct.

Atif242...........sorry but you are wrong with the statement Children are for more clever than we were...they are not, the problem is parents no longer are willing or able to chastise or correct there children...children and we were the same, are very quick at using any chance they get to get what they want, they use the weaknesses of their parents. We did it when we were young , if we could but my parents were alot stricter in the sense that they did not give in at the first instance.

"Hence, they have no choice but to fulfill its requirement."

Rubbish. It's attitudes towards parenting like that mean children are brought up spoilt and uncontrollable. It doesn't matter how much the child cries and yells, a parent has to set limits.

today's children are very much awared of things around them. We shouldn't compare them with our childhood when our parents used to give us angry stare and we used to hide from them hoping that i might get a slap.

Children are like HI-TECH or well matured even in their childhood. They are far more clever than us when we were children. So, again I would blame parents along with current scenario going around us

but I’m talking about toddlers or really very naughty children who will just keep on crying or yelling loudly in public places or malls. I have seen the faces of parents with changing colors as they feel hopeless to control their child. They do try to convince that child with different ways but that child will not listen at all.

Hence, they have no choice but to fulfill its requirement.

Tallg... don't you mean we should blame 'institutions' and 'universities' and, you know, anyone but the parents and the children.

Atif - if children are so disobedient that they cry and throw a tantrum when mom says no, then they have been poorly raised.

Who buys the crap food, the playstations and the computer games for the kids?

The parents.

Who gives the kids money so they can go out and buy their own crap food and computer games?

The parents.

No one else to blame. Plenty of countries have warm weather and junk food, but only in the Gulf are people this obese. Coincidence??

I'm in Qatar for more than 2 years now...and I am really astonished of the big number of "butterballs" here and the fatties on the way to obesity..I couldn't imagine that police women here could be so fat (eg Al Rayah Driving School), they don't have strictly rules in selecting them in army/police forces?!!

Anyway...talking ab the alarm on child obesity I definitely find the parents responsible for their kids obesity and the disabilities resulting from...read a lot ab medical campaigns/alarming facts on Qatari newspapers (some links under) so I believe parents HAVE TO BE aware of the danger (excepting the mother with her two fatty boys from Intercon-swimming pool on Friday who ordered huge hamburgers for them and who was pouring ketchup on their fried potatoes:-(

Sad but true, schools are offering junk food here: in Am.Ac.School-the kindergarten(!!!)they are coming with chips at break time, at QIS on Thursdays they are selling ice-cream..why not some yogurt?! My opinion...

atif - part of the responsibility of bringing up children is telling them what they can and can't do/have etc, regardless of how 'embarrassing' it may be.

I've seen the same excuse posted on QL for why parents don't use child seats or seat belts on their children in the car - "but my child cries or screams so it's easier to let them do what they want".

It's pathetic. Parents who give in to their child's every whim and request are not fit parents in my opinion.

One of the things I find difficult is when it gets hot because I love to walk around,I try to remember to take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk shorter distances instead of using transport, dont really do fast food .Little things that help fit in at least a little exercise.

As I think most of us ran around more and were much more physically active as kids obesity was less .

Parents should always be able to overrule any publicity;

Child: "Mum, can I have a Burger King?"

Mum: "No."

See, it's easy.

They should also ensure they feed their children a healthy diet and make them partake in some form of regular exercise.

By cynbob• 27 Apr 2009 08:34

Who's to blame?

The person who's cramming the fried, unhealthy foods down their throats is to blame!

The problem with blaming the eating establishments, weather or the television removes the responsibility from the obese person.

Until people start taking responsibility for their own actions, there will problems with obesity.

But guys, what even parents can do when these companies have so much attractive publicity attracting children to try for their juicy products.

Also at schools or colleges, when a group of student gets together they do all kind of crazy stuff, eat all kind of junk food or ready made food from the nearest outlet. On different public occassions, they are also available like "Call the devil and the devil is here"

.

I think either government should impose taxes to make them really very costly so children/Ignorant parents are unable to buy it from their pocket money or) these outlets can make healthy food which doesn't make you OBESE.
