PADUCAH, Ky. - An ex-soldier convicted of raping and killing an Iraqi teen and murdering her family was spared the death penalty Thursday and will serve a life sentence after jurors couldn't agree unanimously on a punishment for a brutal crime that the defense blamed partly on combat stress and a lack of military leadership.

After an afternoon of card playing, sex talk and drinking Iraqi whiskey, Pfc. Steven Dale Green, 24, of Midland, Texas, and three other soldiers in March 2006 went to the home of 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi near Mahmoudiya, about 20 miles south of Baghdad. Green shot and killed the teen's mother, father and sister, then became the third soldier to rape the girl before shooting her in the face.

Federal jurors who convicted Green of rape and murder on May 7 told the judge they couldn't agree on the appropriate sentence after deliberating for more than 10 hours over two days. Their choices were a death sentence or life in prison without parole. Since they could not unanimously agree on either sentence, life in prison had to be the verdict"

I think he do, just thinking your ownself or someone you know in treated like this??

I think in THIS PARTICULAR CASE, it would have been better to go for the death sentence.

His crime was Heinous and he doesn't deserve to be kept by the taxpaqyer for the rest of his life - especially since parole is not an option..

Alexa, Earlier reports stated that a couple of them/soldiers had seen the girl while passing their lookout post. They planned this against her while drinking and went to her house for her specifically. They probably started sobering up and that's when they decided to kill everyone in the house to try and cover up the crime.

Alexa, these are monsters, it could have happen to any persons home, the family was just unfortunate, however, I now hope Allah rest them in peace in afterlife and this guys get a very harsh treatment... along with others who were involved.

He committed these crimes there; let their own justice system deal with it. (I know this is a pipe dream).

I think him being in Prison for the rest of his life is a waste of tax payers money. Death sentence without a doubt.

In Texas, had the tables been turned, it is most likely the the jury members would have deliberated and come up with the death penalty.

I, like you, think it would be horrible living in prison for the rest of my life. This 24 year old soldier will have to live with this for the rest of his life.

I hope each day is hell for him.

I agree with Lovely lady ... however, the death penalty will be a way out...this bastard deserves much worse and to really suffer for what he's done...

Bleu you're right, release him to the Iraqi's...i'm sure they would love to torture him.

I don't support the death penalty but I do wonder if an Iraqi soldier had done this to Americans, whether a Texas jury would have been impressed by a claim that there combat stress and a lack of proper military leadership by Saddam was relevant. Personally, I would be more appalled to be jailed for life without parole than to be executed.

Why not return him to Iraq and deliver him to the local population?

He deserves the death penalty.

It was premeditated. It doesn't matter that they were drinking. Rape should be an automatic death sentence. Her whole family was wiped out...

"the defense blamed .... a lack of military leadership."

How about a lack of moral values and decent upbringing?

Firing Squad must be exercised...

electric chair.

given much mercy when it comes time to sentencing.

4 people killed? One 14 year old girl (still a child in my book) raped?

It's a no brainer.

Death penalty.
