getting the answer for this question is easy

the tricky part is HOW you find the answer...

Skanky, I don't work for NASA

but you're close...

the name of the company I work for is an acronym in honor of a famous law of physics... hows that?

I will not name it but if any of you can figure it out, hats off to you...

And swissgirl... I drive you crazy? :'(... sniff... sniff...

your answer is all over the place... its wrong...

5 pencils alone will cost 20...

you got your formula wrong mate

I have given the TWO answers as well as what I think is the simplest way to solve the problem (without using a graph)... let me know if anyone else has a simpler way to solve it

Let

a = pencast

b = pencil cast

c = rubber cast

formula : (4*a)+(b*.5)+(c*.25)=20

therefore 16a+2b+c=80 (multiplying both sides by 4)

therefore 15a + b + a + b + c = 80 ...........(1)

but given a+b+c=20, substituting in (1)

therefore 15a + b + 20 = 80

therefore 15a + b = 60

a can only be 0,1,2,3 or 4 because a or b are not negative

if a = 0 then b=60 wrong answer

if a = 1 then b=45 wrong answer

if a = 2 then b=30 wrong answer

if a = 3 then b = 15 and c = 2 possible answer

if a = 4 then b = 0 and c = 16 possible answer

that is, this problem has two answers...

3 pencast

15 pencil cast

2 rubber cast

or

4 pencast

16 rubber cast

Sorry Everybody got late to answer gotcha question. actually a small boy came to his shop at 1:20pm, he had only QR.20 and his mom told him to buy pen, pencil and rubber and he must spend all QR.20 and total item qty should be 20 also. this Gotcha got confused and he asked this question to QLer's. but unfortunately at 1:51pm first answer came after 30 minutes, so this boy could not wait till time and left without buying anything. So sad for gotcha.................... LOL

3 Pens X 4 Qr = 12 Qr

15 Pencils X 0.5 Qr = 7.5 Qr

2 Rubers x 0.25 Qr= 0.5 Qr

Total = 20.00 Qr

I kill your post sorry.

a = pencast

b = pencil cast

c = rubber cast

formula : (48a)+(b/.5)+(c/.25)=20

when a*4=20 ans=5

when b/.5=20 b=10

when c/.25=20 c=5

the answers are:

a=5

b=10

c=5

3 * pen=12

15*pencil=7.5

2*rubber=.5

total 20 items = QR20

By gotcha• 6 Jan 2008 13:58
gotcha

congrat first one is wrong second one is right.

3 pens x Qr 4 = 12

15 pencils x Qr 0.5 = 7.5

2 rubbers x Qr 0.25 = 0.5

Both Total 20 items and Qr 20

all items should be included in 20 items.

so above one is right

2 rubber = .5

12 + 7.5 + .5 = 20

3+ 15 + 2 = 20

4 pens x Qr 4 = 16

16 rubbers x Qr 0.25 = 4

or

3 pens x Qr 4 = 12

15 pencils x Qr 0.5 = 7.5

2 rubbers x Qr 0.25 = 0.5

Both Total 20 items and Qr 20
