Why are you an expatriate?

Not sure if this topic was here before...
But why are you an expat?
Is it for the money?
Is it for the lifestyle?
Getting to know new cultures?

I know everybody has their own reasons, not always more money, therefore the question.

Thank you for your answers... looks like money is most often, and also a better career opportunities...

The career part was our reason for coming here - better options for my husband..

Also the children (not for me) - this is a good place for children, of course....

He was hired for a very unique position and the other reason was because we wanted to live overseas in a very different place than home. The lifestyle isn't much different from what we are used to, but the experience of living over here is priceless.

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to run into the ones I do,and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Initially I went overseas because I wanted to experience life in another country, so curiosity was my motive. Later I became disillusioned with life in the UK and decided I could have a better life living and working overseas. Although it's not been an easy path so far, I've learned a lot and experienced many things, so much so that now I find it quite difficult to relate to people from my own country! But no regrets, if I'd stayed in the UK I would have learned little and experienced much less! Long live individual independance & free thought!

lived in my home country for more than a few months at a time, as my parents and I travelled around the globe until their deaths in 1990. I just decided that until I want to finally settle down, I would keep travelling to different countries, and fortunately with my teaching qualifications I can do that.

Money (higher wages, lower cost of living and benefits that lead to more money saving), more interesting work (I'm in the construction industry and here in Qatar the projects can be bigger and more challenging in technical terms), less stressful life at a slower pace, slightly higher living standards.

we have not left yet..

but we are coming to Doha to experience a different work enviroment and cultures while the children are young. And now that I think more it may be a positive step in the right direction due to the economy in the west. High house prices are starting to crash, oil and food prices through the roof, and quality of life looks to be more difficult in the future. As if it wasn't already difficult enough.
