Static shocks are often noticed in cold dry weather, especially when in a centrally heated environment, and may disappear when the weather gets more humid.
To avoid shocks when getting out of the car, HOLD the metal door frame before you get out, KEEP HOLDING as you get out, until you are fully out of the car.
It's easy with practice!
If you have forgotten to hold the metal door part as you leave the seat, a shock may often still be avoided by touching the glass window before you touch the metal door. The glass may be conductive enough to dissipate charge, whilst preventing the rapid discharge which is felt as a shock.

This astonishing video shows an accident in which a woman started a fire when refueling. She sat in the car as the fuelling was in progress. After getting out, she would have been charged with static - and caused a spark and fire when she reached for the fueling nozzle. She's lucky not to have been badly hurt.
That’s why the men working in the petrol station must wear a safety cotton coverall to avoid any static shocks.
There are a lot of correct responses to this question about static electricity buildup and shocking discharges. One more variable to add to the equation is the amount of moisture in the air. The humidity has been relatively low recently, making the problem worse. I will bet that your problem goes away in the hot humid months like August and September here.
wwo very informative and somethng which is so coomon but never felt like asking anyone why. congrats 2 the person who started the thread simple but important- atleast i now know my car is safe lol- i was thinking someproblem with the centrallocking system.
I think everybody experience this, me and my husband always get electric shock even just touching eachothers shirt, even when im pushing my shopping trolly i always get this....LoL
LOL! My my! What an enormous amount of responses for such a simple subject.
It's been happening to me too. :) At least here the air is humid enough for it not to be truly painful. Try getting shocked in winter in the western hemisphere. Gypsy, you should know being canadian. :)
Cool tips guys, good of you to share.

I also experience this not only in the cars but even in the office and home. One time I was folding my bedsheet and I saw sparks coming from my finger while rubbing the sheet. I never experience this when I was in Dubai, but here it's frequent. There might be something about this place, it's only here I experience weird things.
Thank God..am not alone....sometimes the shock is very strong... but I never experienced this kind of shock when I was in India. Probably something to do with the atmosphere also.
Me too experienced the same , best way to get rid off this problem is , close the door by touching only the window glass, after getting down.Do not touch the metal part.
Dweller the static strip would and does have no benefit. In fact car tyres conduct electricity due to the graphite within them so the strip is redundant in any case. however even if it did help it would have no function in this circumstance.
The correct answer was by rock the casbah above. It is to do with clothes on the seat
Me too, but any way, the Static electricity is not enough to hurt you at all, but its very annoying. I'm not absolutely sure but I've came to a conclusion that its two side process:
1. For you: Probably created by friction between the shoes you are wearing and the car floor or mat. What happens is you build up a static charge in your body and when you touch something it allows the static to flow to earth and you feel a mild shock.
2. For the Car: the static buildup may be the wind on the outside of the car, The wind as you're driving creates a static electric charge on the car body. The faster you're driving the larger the static charge can be on the car.
And accordingly, both meets +ve and -ve and do this to u :)
Here r some precautions that u can consider if u r really suffering:
1. touch your car with your shoulder when you get out. the static has to discharge through your clothes and the shock is less effective.
2. Spray Static Guard on your clothes and you will not be so "electric" anymore.
3. if you see ur self full of static electricity, try going for natural fibres ... cotton etc and rubber soled shoes/trainers and dont use nylon combs/brushes.
I saw a show before about this electric shock you get from ur car before.
It happens somewhere in U.S i think, when the guy was filling up his tank with petrol he ignited because of the shock, they advise that before you get out of the car you have to rub ur hands together.
Red _pope ur right also about grab a piece of metal and rub it against ur hands....
fpr your reply! i think i will have to start trying to discharge myself, its driving me mental! Mad to hear that everyone else has the same shocks too when they get out the car! some days they really hurt!
It happens to me too often, my husband says when it happens once it will get discharge, no! it keeps happening, Cygnet says I'm in danger in UK as you have to fill your own petrol.
I don't know what to say, it is strange but happens to me every time i was trying to install new desktop. Whenever I come to pick it up it gives me a good shock and like ..woooow, you can hear it and everyone is like what happened? Nothing the desktop is kinda of angry getting out of the box that is it, ... never mind we will solve it.
Try before you go out of the car to touch any metal part inside the car to discharge yourself. It can be your shoes, or anything else.
Many people experience shocks when they get out of their car. Often they believe that the car is charged - but this is not normally so.
Sitting in the car, electrostatic charges are generated on the car seat and the person's body, due to contact and movement between the clothes and the seat. When the person leaves the seat, They take half of this charge with them. As they get out of the vehicle, their body voltages rises due to this charge - a voltage of 10,000 Volts is not unusual.
When they reach to touch the vehicle door, the electrostatic discharge and shock occurs as their hand approaches the metal door.
The voltage build-up can often be avoided by holding onto a metal part of the door frame as you leave the seat. This provides a return dissipation path for the charge on your body.
If you have forgotten to hold the metal door part as you leave the seat, a shock may often still be avoided by touching the glass window before you touch the metal door. The glass may be conductive enough to dissipate charge, whilst preventing the rapid discharge which is felt as a shock.
If you have your keys in your hand - let the spark discharge through the keys not to your fingers, and you won't feel anything!
ya same thing happen to me...one of my friend told me that if u touch ur hairs while driving a car..and when u will comeout and put ur hand on the door..u will get a little shock...
eh i thought some thing is wrong with me coz every time i get off the car touch the door to close it i get wow what a shock not only my car my other friends car and my second car too. every time its like now the 9 weeks am having same thing even this morning.so what i do i close the door with my elbow thats covered

The BIGGEST culprit for giving you static electric shocks is NYLON. In clothes, slippers, car mats, bedding etc

Now...i knew iam not alone. There's whole lot of crowd experiencing this..
Thanks Physics teacher.(Sindbad).for detailed explanation
Shocks are awful. We used to scuff our feet along the carpet in the winter and then touch someone, it was awesome to see them jump and scream! :D

Our bodies are enegy elements and our cars are energy elements.
In theory grab a piece of metal rub(ground) it against your hands and you will be alright. If that does not work they sell antistatic strips.

fpr your reply! i think i will have to start trying to discharge myself, its driving me mental! Mad to hear that everyone else has the same shocks too when they get out the car! some days they really hurt!
Yes me too feel the shock everytime i touch my car. Everytime i touch car door with fear people look at me weird.
Sometimes, my friend's gets shock from my body too. Should i wear protective clothes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is why you see many cars with the static strip trailing on the ground from the rear bumper or some other part of the car.
Many of the old taxis had the strips.
It happens to me too often, my husband says when it happens once it will get discharge, no! it keeps happening, Cygnet says I'm in danger in UK as you have to fill your own petrol.
Just keep dancing, it will do you good!!!
