Why do we celebrate Christmas ?

Just been wondering round the strets. Saw all the decorations. Even had carol singers at the front door last night..

So, a thought comes to mind...

Since many in the UK (an probably around the world) don't consider themselves to be religious. Then why celebrate Christmas ?

it is more to do with Marketing and an effort to overcome slowdown process. Save our jobs and increase more employment. Such festivals and celebrations help to boost economy.

We celebrate Christmas just as we celebrate our birthday.

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. For us who believed in Jesus Christ, His birth changed the whole world and He can also change your life.

It is traditional to give gifts at Christmas, just as you give gifts to your loved ones on their birthdays, God is offering you a gift as well: the gift of complete forgiveness, freedom from sin, and eternal life with Him in heaven. Just like you must accept a Christmas gift for it to be yours, you must accept God’s gift of salvation..

Merry Christmas britexpat

Boston I guess you go the movie to listen to the film? For us it's about seeing her majesty not listening to what she says because at 3pm one is hardly sober to concentrate on every word she is saying.lol

i guess every celebration is about getting the family and loved ones together on a day and just be happy in every possible way.at least that's what it means to me.in our family, besides our own festivals,we used to celebrate Eid and Christmas too in a small way.we children were raised to respect and revere every faith and their culture.this has been particularly good in moulding the way we look at all the different faiths around the world.thanks to my family for that!

P.S:we're buying a Yule Log this year for Christmas :-)

God's Christmas Present

Let me tell you the story

Of the sweet Jesus Christ,

Who brought heaven to earth,

One cold winter night.

As planned by His Father,

A long time ago,

In the form of a babe,

He came down below.

His divine mission

Unknown at the time,

Was later revealed,

When God felt inclined.

The day the sweet Lord

Was nailed to that cross,

Was the day that God showed,

Mankind was not lost.

By the Son's grief and pain,

Man could be forgiven,

And God gave to man,

A vision of heaven.

But thick in his thinking,

And blind in his heart,

Man missed the Lord's meaning,

And remained in the dark.

Thus, each year at Christmas,

The tale is retold,

And man is reminded,

Of Jesus Christ's role.

Access to heaven,

God's gift to man,

God's Christmas Present,

The Start of His Plan!

True Meaning of Christmas

Just a week before Christmas I had a visitor. This is how it happened. I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out next to the fireplace.

"What are you doing?" I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a simple statement . . .

"TEACH THE CHILDREN!" I was puzzled. What did he mean? He anticipated my question and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said, "Teach the children!

Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten. "Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before the mantle. "Teach the children that the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man's thoughts turning toward heaven."

He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR. "Teach the children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise."

He then reached into his bag and pulled out a CANDLE. "Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness."

Once again he reached into his bag and removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree. "Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection."

He then pulled from his bag an ORNAMENT of himself. "Teach the children that I, Santa Claus, symbolize the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December."

He then brought out a HOLLY LEAF. "Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly berries represent the blood shed by Him.

Next he pulled from his bag a GIFT and said, "Teach the children that God so loved the world that he gave his begotten son." Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift.

Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the tree. "Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherds' crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother's keeper."

He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. "Teach the children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior's birth. The angels sang Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward men."

Suddenly I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled out a BELL,. "Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it should ring mankind to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return.

Santa looked back and was pleased. He looked back at me and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, "Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship him, our LORD, our GOD."

We went to Mosques during Eid, to Temples on Mondays, when Indian women fast, to Gurudwaras during Sikh festivals.. We were just comparing the beauty of girls across religions :)

Good question....I do celebrate Chrsitmas although do not have any ties with the religion. Probably for me, it is a way to have fun in winter :)

As a child we used to have winter vacation and Christmas was an oppurtunity to visit Christians in the neighbourhood and spend the evenings with their kids. Growing up it still is a day to meet friends, relatives or simply go on vacation (there are excellent deals this time of the year).

It's a day of fun for me basically and don't ask me why I do not go out to have fun on Eid days or other auspicious days from various religions.

You don't need to be religious to celebrate Christmas. Christmas is all about love, unconditional love. It's the time we forget our differences and take care of each other. It's not just an excuse for family being together but an opportunity. Remember no other success can compensate for failure in the home. Problem of celebrating Christmas is the Roman empire and pagans that made changes on it like exchanging gift, why exchange gift?, why not just give to the unfortunate? For me Christmas is one of the best time to be grateful to the many blessings I received and a time to extend help the the less fortunate. Also a time to think of Christ, following his examples and be obedient to the almighty. God be with you always and enjoy the Christmas.

Its about reminding ourselves of the sacrifice made 2000 years ago, its about reminding ourselves of how much God loves us.

And its about the things are important...family, the importance of putting aside everything and gathering together as a unit...keeping up traditions that we pass on to our kids.

By mmyke• 23 Dec 2009 21:38

which brings family and friends together, and the less religion has to do with it the better,,,to celebrate a god in this day and age is stupid. Let the celebration revert to its pagan origins which celebrate the inherent goodness and blessings of mothe rearth and family, and reverance for the life which mother earth provides to us all.

It's about getting the family together and having a day of eating, drinking, giving presents and watching the Queen's monotonous speech. It's all about family for me :-)

History will tell how it all started! And we just blindly follow such tradition! The word itself is no where to be found in the "book". It's business as usual (now, before it's a diversionary move by the .....)! But it's a good excuse for a long holiday (and a reunion, as you said).
