Why Learner Drivers Suck ....
Yesterday when driving home I wound up behind a learner driver in the left lane on the Messaid-Wakra road. I was doing 120(ish) as I approached him. He was barely doing 100.
The driver never looked in his mirror and did not pull over despite ample opportunities to do so. For safety reasons I always drive with my lights on, so he had no excuse for not seeing a huge Nissan Patrol looming behind him.
Now you might ask about the instructor?
Could he not see me in the mirror either?
Not a chance. He had on one of those construction worker full face cover jobbies that Filipinos wear to avoid the sun.
And dark glasses.
And his seat was reclined.
And he was FRICKIN SLEEPING!!!!!
120 MPH???? Or Kilometers!? Sorry for the dumb question...
Shaine - Thks ..
The D day was today actually.. But the Qatari administration is so efficient... they forgot to include my papers... So its 21st now...
And best thing is they say come on 21st.. as if it was a big favor done to me....
I was like.. F it.. no point breakin head against the Dumb wall....

Just an observation - I cannot see you flash your lights at me if you are two inches from my rear bumper.

B2D... I am driving these days.... with a instructor.. but it wasn't me for sure...
Never dare to stop a PATROL with Lancer....

I take it as a threat when the person flashing their lights is driving dangerously - i.e. 10 cm off my rear bumper. If it's just to say "be alert" or "give way" Why should I if I'm doing the speed limit and not obstructing law abiding traffic?

fully agree to formatted soul. you need to remembe your old days once you were a learner as well.
Remember ...you were also once a Learner!
Actually, I have had people kindly tell me my lights were on, thinking I was unaware of the fact.
Like Baldrick, I drive with my headlights on so I can be seen more easily (not to get people to move out of my way) and hopefully avoid the idiots who change lanes indiscriminately LOL
Why would it distract other drivers? It's not like I'm driving with my hazard lights flashing in fog which IS illegal in most countries (not sure about here) as the car is incapable of using the turn signals while the hazards are engaged?
People are intimidated (if one can call it that) because it has become common practice to use the headlights as a "threat" to others on the road here in the Gulf, not because it's illegal or distracting.

Actually, it is illegal to drive with your lights on in the daytime hours in Oman. And it is also illegal there to drive a dirty car.
Mandi
Shaine - perhaps the policeman thought you weren't aware your lights were on and was trying to be helpful?
I don't think it's illegal to drive with your lights on in Qatar (or anywhere that I know of) but perhaps someone can clarify that point?

You mentioned flashing lights in your comment. Perhaps I misunderstood what you meant. And I didn't compare Qatar to anything.
42 is the best answer. Do somebody need 42 bottles of the hard stuff then?
I will hoist that up the flag pole and see who salutes it!!
The answer is always 42! :-)
Whatever you vividly imagine, Ardently desire, Sincerely believe and Enthusiastically act upon, Must inevitably come to pass.
That a bottle of the hard stuff if offered gets a driving licence over here regardless of how crap a driver you are!
I will hoist that up the flag pole and see who salutes it!!
Did you ever rea "Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" ?
Zaphod Beeblebrox used to wear glasses which instantly went black as soon as danger was encountered.
Hahaha NFH ...
Baldrick, why would a driving instructor be wearing that face cover?
I'm thinking that the sucky driver WAS the instructor, using the driving school car to give his construction worker friend a ride home!
:-D
Oh I see, so in theory everyone should drive in the right hand lanes, unless they want to pass the person in front, and then they do so by moving into the left hand lane temporarily and then moving back into the right hand lane. However I can imagine that people see the left hand lane as their own person speeding lane, which would still be ok if it weren't for the fact that most other people are using it as their own personal lane too.
Daytime running lights have been proven to reduce traffic accidents. They are required on all cars sold in Canada and, as Baldrick said, in certain Scandinavian countries.
However, I do believe the problem here (and in many other situations I have observed) is the instructor. If anything, they're worse than the people they're supposed to teach. I've seen them stick pieces of newspaper in the side window to avoid the sun - of course, then the driver cannot see anything either in the side mirror let alone through the frickin window.
Obviously, there's little control or inspection done of instructors at the driving schools by either the police or RTA. So, does that mean ultimately that the police/government agencies should be held to account?
It's technically illegal to pass on the right hand lane here and in most other countries.
Good luck.

"It's only safe if everyone knows to watch both sides. Here you are lucky if they even watch the front, let alone the rear and one side!"
What scares me about that statement, is that I think you're deadly serious.
.
.
The definition "overrun" saying "It's called "overrun" be by a vehicle on another IF IT EXCEEDS axis road" if it exceeds axis road and it has more lanes is called "outrunning" and may also be on the left and right-hand (especially in case of motorcycles)
.
.
You can't have a light without a dark to stick it in!
But MissX, you are refering to a country where the majority of drivers can drive ;o)
It's only safe if everyone knows to watch both sides. Here you are lucky if they even watch the front, let alone the rear and one side!
Tallg, there you go. I give the facts and they make up what they want to try and put me down. What really gets my goat though was the fact I posted this to highlight the fact that the instructor was sleeping. Amazing!
.
back2doha and shaine - way to make assumptions guys! You assumed he flashed his lights and you assumed he was speeding. Why?
That's strange that it is illegal. In my country as far as I know as long as you don't exceed the speed limit then you can overtake in any lane. However there is a unofficial fast and slow lane that most people adhere to. Well we don't really refer to it as overtake, that word is used more when it is a one lane road, and you have to cross into a lane that has oncoming traffic to overtake. Haha as I type that, it sounds really dangerous.
So if it is a 3 lane road, and there is a car in the far right lane, and in the far left lane, and you wanted to get ahead of both of them, you couldn't legally just move into the middle lane and accelerate?
MissX, yes it is illegal to 'undertake'
Drac, same in UK too. In fact, what made me laugh is in Kuwait they also have 2 steering wheels!!! I kid you not.
.
Seems Abu Dhabi is the same :o)
.
.
In my country, the learning cars are equipped with double command systems (brakes, etc) for the learning driver and instructor also.
Here...it's like a accident-lottery!

You can't have a light without a dark to stick it in!
I agree with you on all fronts. I sometimes wish I had two scud missiles strapped to the side of my car;_)))))))))))))
I will hoist that up the flag pole and see who salutes it!!
Yeah we have very strict driving lessons in Australia. To the point where the instructor would shield our rear view mirror for 5 seconds and ask us what colour car was behind us, in order to reinforce the idea to maintain constant awareness of who was around us at all times. There is also a campaign in Australia to drive with your lights on, in a bid to increase visibility on roads.
Question, is it illegal to overtake in the right hand lane (slow lane)?
Shaine - two things:
1. In UK many years ago they ran a campaign, Be Seen, Be Safe. Having seen the aftermath of cars pulling out of the U-turns on that road, I want to be SEEN! So yes, I am scared of someone hitting my ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE Patrol
2. Have you notice how Scandanavian made cars have 'daytime running lights' on them. It has been proven to reduce accidents.
When I was a learner I had a QUALIFIED instructor sat beside me, who, to the best of my knowledge stayed awake throughout every lesson.
Again .... I did not flash, but when being taught to drive in UK, instructors tell you to look in you mirror almost as much as out through the windscreen. If he looked in the mirror even once in that 3-4 km, he would have seen me, lights on or not!
... and yes, I am a specialist - I have taken both racing driver lessons and Advanced Driving in UK, so I do have a pretty good idea what I'm talking about.
Learn your facts before getting on your high horse.
Thanks Brit :o)
let me reiterate...if you look in the majority of the vehicles owner's manuals over here you will see that the high beam lever is called the "passing" lever and it is quite appropriate to use it to warn people to get out of the way because you want to pass them. Trainees should not be in any lane if they cannot maintain speed with the traffic flow. Let them learn to drive at Lossail or in an empty parking lot.
“A lot of the people who keep a gun at home for safety are the same ones who refuse to wear a seat belt”
If someone is doing 50km in the left lane then what is wrong with gently flashing them to move? I certainly wouldn't tailgate them or harrass them but why should I illegally overtake from the right because someone likes to drive slowly in the fast lane?

I used the worh "hassling" and I apologize..
Where did I say I flashed my lights?
Expecting someone to return to the inside lane after overtaking, when safe to do so is the norm in most countries. If the instructor was awake, maybe he could have taught him this fundamental rule.
That road has 2 lanes only. Driving up the inside of a novice is not a good plan, so driving around was not an option.
120 is not hauling ass - it is the speed limit on that road.
I did not harass him, I sat a safe distance behind him and waited (around 3-4km) till he realized where he was and pulled in of his own accord.
Apology awaited.
You have a point about the instructor sleeping on the job. However pulling up behind anyone flashing your lights and expecting them to move out of your way is obnoxious. Join the civilized world. In so many cases those of you who are hauling ass can easily change lanes and go around someone rather than harassing some poor beginning driver. Agressive driving is why so many people get in wrecks in Qatar. Slow down and drive the speed limit. EVERYONE WILL BE BETTER OFF.
I saw a learner driver in the left lane near Messila, expected her to turn left towards the hospital as she was in the left lane but no, she carried on straight towards Al Sadd and stayed in the left lane all the way to Al sadd street even though she was only doing 50km. Despite flashing her to move over and let me pass she just carried on her merry way and the instructor just let her stay there for nearly 2 km.

Perhaps the instructor was just a dummy dressed in the garb..
Anyway, you should be ashamed for "hassling" a poor learner driver :)
Should wellcome new comer
