Will You Give A Lift To Strangers ???

Noble-Man

Summer is approaching fast. I still remember last Summer, Mowasalat issued a statement that they were building shelters at all bus stops accross the country. Summer is here again, no shelters are to be seen.

Occasionally, while driving, we'll see people by the streets try to stop us for a lift. Will you give a lift to Strangers ???

Last year end of August we could hardly get a taxi because of Asian games and there are some people, do stop to give us a lift if they see us walking in the heat with our kids. Sometimes it depends on the situation. In Saudi never stop for stranger it's a big risk to do it, but here in Qatar I don't think it's that serious.

my post Novita? Your husband is so right about that. In the end it is up to you if you want to pick them up or not. I did it so many times, but in most of them it was like if I'm looking for trouble ... :)

My husband told me never give a lift to stranger. If your car involve in an accident, they can sue you in the court (even though i have a good intention).

It's hard when you don't have a car or carpool to bring you to your destinations especially during rush hours (6am-7am and 4pm-6pm) and of course, the 12nn - 3pm time. It's so hard to get a taxi too. '

So, whenever I see a lady or a woman with a child or groceries waiting for a ride, I usually ask them where they're heading and if it's on the way, I'm glad to drop them off.

Depends on the situation like when I saw this Indian guy with his son in the heat I stopped and gave them a lift. another case at Industrial area when I'm looking for a paint for my car the guy tried to stop me but I ignored him. but when he sees I stop next block he begs me for a lift there's no taxi available at that time because of Asian games. he's from Jordan although I know I'm taking risk. But he was very kind and grateful!

The truth is difficult to deny!

any of the guys who said that they won't give some people a ride. It happened once before that I gave a guy a ride. when he was in .. I were able to smell how drunk he was. He was telling me that I'm going to the corniche. After that he told me, a little further to Doha Club [before they change the whole place]. I was kinda of worried not because of the man, but because of my little brother who was with me sitting in the back seat.

When we reached there, I told him .. ok we are here. So he asked me to take him to Wakrah. I told him man, I have no time for that I would really love to do that, but i gotta go somewhere. He ignored me like I was not talking to him, so I decided to get out of the car ... open the door and grab him outside the car while he was pushing me and fighting back like if I'm taking him from his own car which freaked my brother out .. so I carried him like a child and throw him some where and left. He was cursing and swearing but he was a drunk so I left him while most of the club members were there enjoying the show :(

Once again also I picked up a guy from my way back to Doha from Wakrah .. he told me just drop me near Parashot Roundabout [was still there back then]. When we reach it i told him where should I drop you .. he said a little to the front near .. Toyota Tower, .. after that to Nijma Signals ... then To Crazy signals ..when i reached the Crazy signals I was thinking of doing something crazy too because he was opening his mouth to say .. a little fur... so I pulled over and can you please get out of the car? You were not on my way from the beginning and you kept asking my to do that until you made me faraway from my home .. he went down of the car and he was grumbling about the people who can't do something good in there life, .. the people who can't drop you at your place .. So I asked him, excuse me? are you talking to me? please go and get yourself a cab and don't talk like that because it is not good at all and left him ...

So .. my experience with this was always bad ... and you don't know sometimes what should you really do and I will tell you why.

This guy might be with expired Visa so if you get caught with this guy, then you are in trouble.

This guy can be sort of a thief, i picked up one before with me and after few minutes he asked me please here, .. so i looked beside me and missed my sunglasses. so I asked him simply, return the sunglasses and get out of the car before i call the cops and it was.

Only god knows and I'm asking him to avoid all of you guys the accidents, but it happens. If you had an accident and this guy get injured then you have to pay him for that and if he died, you gotta pay his family 100,000 Q.R or even more. Money is not the problem, but can you live with the fact that you killed someone that you don't know because he asked you for a lift?

I used to wait also under the sun for 1 hour or an hour and a half waiting for Mouwasalat Buses, felt so bad and angry with myself for having no car .. but can't also blame other people for that ...

Now again I have no car, but ... let god be with us all.

Not unless it was a medical emergency. There are too many lunatics here and too many arcane laws and customs. By giving someone a ride you are laying yourself open to all kinds of hazards.

There is a story in the paper today about an Indian guy taking a Phillipina to court for "blaspheming his God". In case you feel any sympathy for this "religious" man, he is really pissed because he allegedly gave her QR12,000 in exchange for marriage and then saw her out with another man.

Too much lunacy here. You give someone a ride and you never know what they may accuse you of.

Exposed commuters still waiting for bus sheltersPublished: Wednesday, 16 May, 2007, 08:31 AM Doha Time

By Ramesh Mathew

WITH Mowasalat’s bus services now well over a year old, it appears there is no end in sight for passengers waiting for shelters to protect them as they wait in the sun.

Commuters, including expatriate women, waiting in the open are a common sight with the temperature hitting 42 degrees on most days.

While buildings and verandas are being used in localities like National, in most other places people have to stand out in the open. This can be seen at stops along Salwa Road, the Al Muntaza-Tadamon stretch, Wakra road, Rayyan road, and long distance routes like Madinat Al Shamal, Dukhan and Al Khor.

Company sources indicate that there has been a massive rise in the number of passengers. More than 450,000 people reportedly board buses every week. Equally remarkable is the growth in the number of new routes.

With the introduction of season tickets, connectivity has gone up considerably which has led to an increase in daily passengers on almost all routes.

“While there is little doubt that buses have been a major relief to a large number of commuters, and those who otherwise had to rely mostly on taxis, the absence of shelters is causing concern to passengers,” said Faisal, a regular traveller on Salwa road.

He suggests that the authorities should consider setting up shelters like those built in the UAE over the last one year. The air-conditioned shelters for bus passengers in UAE have been praised universally.

Similar efforts are also underway in Saudi Arabia, according to newspaper reports.

Inquiries with Mowasalat yesterday found that a contract for setting up shelters had already been awarded.

A company official could not confirm when the first shelter would be ready.

“As the company is not directly involved with construction of shelters, we cannot confirm when the first bus shelter will be ready” is all the official said.

Boris,

Besides the one near the Jaidah Flyover (which Stealth claimed was not put up by Mowasalat) where else can we see the shelters at bus stops ? Even if they exist, they are still not widely seen.

How can people stand the heat under the firing sun ? Lots of cases of heat stroke reported at HMC during Summer.....

I am a man who knows about security, If my wife i in the car most likely not. However you have to look at the situation. Is it a mother with childern? A Family? or are you out in the out skirts and you just passed a vehicle wich was on the side of the road broken down? It may be you some days. Just remember common snese goes a long way, and women should always be careful!

As a lady and a filipina, i am hesitate to offer a lift to ANYONE

(hope you understand what i mean?). Unless he is in an emergency medical case.

Let me share you this. In one case, after doing some works from HMC that was summertime, i saw one indian guy on the street waiting for taxi, he carried a blue plastic bag of medicines. Obviously he came out from ER-HMC and looks very ill, I noticed that he was crying of pain. As a nurse, i should not be racist nor sexist either. I offered a help to gave him lift and found out that he was having high grade fever and cough and he works in a small cafeteria somewhere in Bin Omran. After dropping him, he and his colleagues was very grateful of me "Thank you Madam!" oh how wonderful i felt. Also, before leaving they offered me orange juice from cafeteria and that's free! :)

So, i am not racist nor sexist(just a clarity!), but situational case.

Number one..you may get in more trouble giving a ride to a woman than you want, keep in mind where you are.

Number two... I have given quite a few rides to hitchhikers especially in the outlying areas where there is little traffic such as between Al Wakrah and Trainor or Kharrara, Um Bab, Um Hotta etc. and they were quite gracious although the got a little worried when my GPS started talking to me in a female voice LOL. Ladies I don't blame you and it doesn't matter what country you are in it's dangerous.

Oh yeah... I am a westerner.

Don't be in a hurry to condemn because he doesn't do what you do or think as you think or as fast. There was a time when you didn't know what you know today.

The shelter at the bus stop near jaidah flyover was not put up by Karwa rather by the Qatari who resides there.

But men NO! unless i knew the person.

For me it's kind of charity, just like giving tip in a restaurant or petrol station. I dont have much wealth to share w/ the needy but at least in a simple way like this i'm happy that i helped people. Their golden words "Thank you or Shukran! and God bless you!" is invaluable for me :)

i always give a lift to anybody , especially at night when is harder to find a taxi.i have been here since 2004 and for a long time i didn't have a car and many times i had to walk from airport road to al saad. in my lucky nights some people stoped their cars and ask me if i wanted a lift, without asking for money.so i try to do the same thing now.i am not affraid and i do this mostly inside the city limits.remember that there are a lot of people which can't afford a trip with the taxi.

I would never give a lift to a guy if I’m alone in the car, I wouldn’t feel safe, but I would take a woman.

where i was waiting for a cab for over an hour and although i had a couple of guys asking if they could drop me somewhere, i refused. I just wonder why women never offer another woman a lift when they see her desperately looking for a taxi?

I wouldnt mind giving anyone a lift if they r on my way...Coz i've been taking taxis in this country for a long time under the burning sun....and I feel what they r goin through.

But the question is..DO these people trust others to give them a lift?

By dweller• 8 May 2007 13:58

If you are on your own or have your kids in the car (assuming that you have kids) don't even think of giving a lift to male passengers as it isn't safe.

I have given lifts on the Dukhan road but never if the wife, kids or grand kids were in the car.

Police once flagged me down before Shahaniya to give a guy (together with his blankets) a lift. Turned out he was one of the QP bedouin type security men from the field. I took him right up to his base, met his mates and had a couple of cups of mint tea with them.

I won't give rides to strangers in the Middle East. It's not that I mind helping them, but they tend to be --um-- unwashed. I've given people rides before and regretted it because of the smell they left in my car. Sorry to be so blunt, but that's life.

if you havent seen them that does not mean they dont exsist, i have seen some, one of them is next to the jaidah Flyover where it says Buss Stop. it has a nice shelter and a sitting place where people can rest.
