Woman defying drive ban dies in accident

RIYADH: A Saudi police official says a young woman in her twenties defying a driving ban in the capital died along with three female friends when her car overturned.

Maj Fawaz Al Mouman said yesterday that the unidentified woman, who was in her twenties, was driving her four wheel drive vehicle carrying 10 of her female friends in an open area often used by young men in car races.

The vehicle overturned and killed four of passengers including the driver, while the remaining six others were taken to a nearby hospital in northeastern Riyadh to treat their injuries.

There have been several incidents reported in recent years of women being killed in accidents while driving despite the ban, one of a host of restrictions imposed on women in Saudi Arabia.

Women’s rights campaigners have petitioned The Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz urging him to lift the ban.

I know, flor. You are a 'causal' thinker. But quantum physics allows totally un-caused events.

Slightly skewed reporting.

I do not agree with the ban on ladies driving, but the driving and the ban are two different things here.

The girls were driving in the desert. This is often done by women, girls and kids because they can't drive on the roads..

May they rest in peace..

True. People over-rule the rule of common sense every single day.

Not necessarily. Some rules can be over-ruled.

Perhaps if these girls had actually been allowed to take driving lessons from someone other than their brothers these silly accidents wouldn't happen.

This quote is disgusting, in the year 2010.

‘Allowing women to drive will only bring sin. The evils it would bring - mixing between the genders, temptations, and tarnishing the reputation of devout Muslim women - outweigh the benefits.’

Right. Like the benefits of freedom to drive themselves, and be independant?. Ok....

Only works at low speeds, WK. At the Speed of Light relativistic effects will still overturn the car.

Thats really sad...

They were supposed to challenge the rule... now they will be blamed and showed as examples for the rule being implemented.....
