I'm applying my CV to jobs in Qatar and UAE...does applying a cover letter with my CV a useful thing? does the person or department receving my CV would actually read my cover letter or they would just throw it away..I'm asking because I'm planning to enclose cover letters with my CVs and I want to give them extra care...so is it worth the time and effort or it's just a useless custom? thx

It is very important because in a resume we just out line our educational and work history. A cover letter, however, can shed light on the details that you can not provide in a resume. You can google sample cover letters and customize them according to your needs.

As other answers ...

The cover letter serves as an introduction, and says which position you are applying for.

Use it to give basic facts:

Dear Sir,

I wish to apply for ....

I have XX years of relevent experience

I feel I would be an asset to your business because I can bring A, B, C.

Attached is a copy of my CV detailing my previous employment history and education ....

etc.

It's more professional with a cover letter. Giving a resume without a CV is like submitting an unsolicited report. You can put in the cover letter a summary of your qualifications, which could be helpful for the busy HR people.

It's always worth the time to customize your CV and write a covering letter for a job.. been told this by various HR execs and have read about it in a lot of books.. All the best mate.
