Being gay in Doha

By standard109

A work colleague of mine is coming over in January for 12 month contract.

He is gay, but is aware of the strict rules and respects them.

If he doesnt actually do anything with anyone else - i.e associate, fratinise or enter into relationships with men will he be ok?

He is quite conservative and definately not in your face "gay"

Bestest regards

How is he going to get in trouble if he doesn't do anything? You can't get in trouble for just being gay - do you think there are no gay men in Qatar or something! There are lots. Generally the main concern is about the relationships between men and women, and protecting women's honour - homsexuality, while definitely forbidden, is not something people think a lot about here.

Being gay is fine. Being 'openly' gay is not

I believe everyone's answers are correct, that simply being gay should not be an issue. The unanswered part, and not really different than a heterosexual couple. We know dating goes on here and sometimes more, but it is not acceptable under the law. So he would if he decides to, just as those heterosexual couples do, be careful about who he meets and is involved with.

If you are asking if they will interrogate your friend on arrival about his sexual orientation the answer is obviously no.

That being said, if he were caught doing anything that could be considered immoral while in Doha the punishment would be severe. If he can live here and not have any relationships he would be fine, otherwise I would suggest he lives in a country that wouldn’t lock him up or stone him for his lifestyle.

Not a good idea. Any time he engages in "gay" activities, its dangerous.

theres no problem in being gay as long as he knows his limitations and where he is. i have 2 or 3 gay colleagues and ive been working with them for 3 years now. and as far as i know they havent face any problem here in doha,.

As long as he is not obviously gay, I don't think he will have a problem.
