Racism ?

I've felt this on lot of occasions in Qatar. Especially in Souq Waqif. If you've even been to Souq Waqif, you must have noticed there is a shurta (Police) in between all those shops as well.
What I've noticed is sometimes the police guys , filter out people from Asia, more often from Subcontinent (Pakistan , India, Bangladesh, Nepal) etc. and ask them to leave the place. And you know its very easy to recognize people from different part of the world. so whenever see such guys they ask them (even politely) to leave.
PS: Have seen this at Pearl Qatar as well.

So what you guys interpret it as ? Racism ?

this thread is a bit desturbimg to ppl wanting to move to Qatar. i am from South Africa. I am a white lady married to a 5th generation South African Indian. my husband is highly educated with 2 degrees (one masters and one honors). would he be turned away at a shopping centre????

I agree with the issue one of the other members mentioned on here. In dubai the labourers used to stare to the point of irretation at all and any western woman. It is quite desturbing, but its a sacrifice i am prepared to make to live in a safe enviroment and earn a good salary.

If it was only about money, they could simply keep an entrance ticket at the malls ( say 50 Qrs or 100 Qrs ) and then when you purchase something inside the mall you could get the ticket reimbursed over there. So you will keep the non-paying wanderers out.

But lets be honest, its just about racism not about business.

Sad.....as if poor labourers are there to stare at your already fully covered women and food.

Double standards everywhere......

With all due respect to those labourers and their hard time here in Qatar, I do go regularly to souq and I prefer them staying out, it is not racism it is management. Would you want poor labourers staring at your food or women while you are eating, No ..you would not..I can not leave my house without them starring at my decently clothed wife. They keep looking after I shout at them as well. I dont need that on my day of.

Now, bring it on bash me for saying it out loud. Whatever, that is how it is.

Hey Makdrive,

As I have observed racism does not have a colour, creed, nationality, religion etc.

In this country I have experienced racism from people from all walks of life including my own country.

But then again, I have met really wonderful people from all walks of life.

You are right about one thing though, some of the policies in this place are highly questionable.

By linc• 3 Apr 2010 12:30

Of course this is racism, and it is not so much on the part of the guards as it is their employers. I have never seen a single Qatari or white man turned away on "family day" anywhere here. At the same time, the gender imbalance here is so great that if they opened up places like the Villagio to all the male workers, the place would be overrun and not a place where my wife would be comfortable shopping.

makdrive: It is unfortunate that professionals from Subcontinent are treated as labors. Even Labors and Scavangers from other countries are treated as high/profile people especially in most of the middle east countries. Situations will be changed gradually.

By GodFather.• 12 Mar 2010 21:12
GodFather.

I was driving pass the national area on my way to Souq Waqif could not help noticing mostly guys from the sub-continent lined up on both side of the road. As the Doha land development is in full swing and the musherib area is been demolished. I was wondering when Dohaland is complete, what will happened to all these group of guys sitting around National Area.

Will Doha Land mean the end these group of guys from the national area too?

If anyone looks deeper it is discrimination based on the color of money rather than color of skin. Many asians and dark skinned people are welcomed with open arms if their pockets are deep.

depends on one's perception and experience. One could consider it racism while another doesn't. That's how argument/debate starts....

Probably its the dressing ethics and purchasing power that they look for in souq. Just like they won't let a shabily dressed man in a slippers to spoil the scenery of the evening. Idealy they (the police) should put up public notice boards for the "Do's & Don't", rules and regulations in that area for ease of info to all.

there is no other name for it it is racism

i noticed it in city center as well

they let me enter and my friend, but dozens of Asians were not allowed :(

another face of racism too

they said "ONLY FAMILIES"

so you are letting Arabs and westerners to let in and non the others?

this happened 2 months ago

@drama

or maybe an attempt to maintain the class/high profile of the place ? could it be ?

because majority of the south asians are in category of labor.

hey I personally find it highly racist. But i am just trying to figure out the mentality behind.
