Souvenirs, gifts, and so on from Qatar
By sylwiastep •
Going home for summer, and I was thinking what I shall take back with me? As I came to no original ideas, maybe you can help me?
Do you have any ideas for original, funny, interesting gifts for people back home? As I've been here for 3 years, they all already have shishas, burning smelly things, local perfume...
What would you take back home from Qatar?

I am really wondering of the Qatari traditional things. we can not say clothing is Qatari tradition because it is for all the gulf area, but the difference is how to wear it. also we can find tradtional gifts from so many countries unless qatar. also the qatari food is not available in the restaurents.!!! I think abottle of sand is not bad idea (if) u note that it is from Qatar.
Adizri, why dont you place your ads at the classified section?
a bottle of SAND...... you can get it along sealine or anywhere in doha ...then put a note FROM QATAR.....
bekhair DaRuDe, asac tayeeb...russian dolls are a set of dolls which fit inot each other...the biggest one is on the outside, inside you will find several dolls inside each other

Russian dolls also available in Hallmark shops along with other Gulf souvenirs.
Yes, you will find those dolls in Souq Waqif... the traditional shops in the Alley... not the clothing and foodshops on the inside....
Happy shopping... did it about 4 weeks ago, before I went home... but it was my first trip back.. so was easy... also dreading it once I have been back a few time...

I knew you would help me! I like your ideas, just make a list and off going shopping tomorrow.
Diamondgirl, where can I buy the russian (arabic) dolls? I haven't seen them anywhere...
Cnidaria, and the clock I assume would be in the souqs? I'm sure my ex boss will appreciate it, hi hi hi :)

dullahs (traditional coffee pots),
incense burners with State of Qatar on them, charcoal pieces for smokeless burning with selection of frankincense and bukhoor for burning (you can wrap this up nicely with clear plastic and ribbon and put it in the incense burner),
swords used for ardha (traditional sword dance by men),
locally made halawa,
gold in local design for jewellery,
those 'Russian dolls' made as local man in thobe and local woman in abaya,
a selection of postcards from Qatar,
a Quran,
good quality dates,
an abaya w/ shayl and a thobe w/igal and guttra (also available in children's sizes which they love to dress up in!
Always a good choice is the cheap 10QR plastic alarm clocks that have the call to prayer - just for the cheesyness, not nuch local stuff available i'm afraid - pearl diving chest if you have the money, or a pearl collecting net.

Theres a shop near the former Fort R/A that sells Arab/Qatari handicrafts and souvenirs.
Ha ha ha, I like the idea of the personal cookbook. I could write a thick one, oh yes.
I'd start with the even when I cooked according to the recipe, and I cooked enough food for a small Arab family of at least 24. Have I mentioned I was cooking for 2 adults and a child? :)

I just love all the stuff at RESHI in Landmark Mall. It's just beautiful and it's always 1/2 price. Always.
1) An Arabian cook book, written in english!
2) Personally written cook book, on the 1001 ways of how NOT to make arabian dishes at home!
Please, say where as well. Got only 10 days before I go, so have to be quick :)

Artwork and handicrafts that reflect the region you've been in. And I don't mean the made in India and Pakistan stuff available in the usual tourist traps.
