Falconry in Qatar is more than just a sport; it's an integral part of Qatar's culture and national heritage. It is a tradition that is deeply rooted in the Qatari lifestyle. Qatari fathers take immense pride in teaching their sons the art of falconry, so they can enjoy the sport like their forefathers. However, do not be in doubt, that there are women who enjoy the sport as much.

Though a popular sport in America and Europe for centuries, falconry has all but disappeared in these areas. It does, however, continue to live on in the Gulf Peninsula, and especially Qatar, where this ancient sport was introduced 5,000 years ago by the Bedouin tribes who used falcons for hunting purposes.

Qataris who enjoy falconry and the thrill of this sport will spend thousands of riyals on not only a well-bred falcon, but also on falconry equipment which may include a training and grooming kit complete with nail clippers perch, gloves, leg bands to identify falcons, homing devices so the falcons don't get lost or stolen, and other important items.

In fact, don't be surprised if the passenger next to you on the aeroplane is a falcon; they have their own passports, too!!!

Qataris hold falconry in very high regard and make sure it is practiced correctly, keeping in mind Islamic traditions. Al-Gannas, founded in 2008, is Qatar's main cultural association entrusted with the aim to promote and preserve the modern form of this ancient sport.

Not only does it consist of state-of-the-art facilities and equipment needed for hunting and conduct research in falconry as well, it organizes falconry events and represents Qatari falconry experts in regional and international contests.

Falconry is so popular in Qatar, there is an entire Souq dedicated to falcons, falconry and its equipment. There is even a special falcon hospital where falcons are treated in case of injury or disease.

Falconry is a way of life for many in Qatar; a source of pride; a thrilling adventure; and a part of who they are.
