As long as your intention is to be decent and respecting the local culture, why not?  Behaving decently should be followed as well as not to ruin the good image of the abaya itself. I love abaya it shows dignity.

Cant imagine a lady wearing abaya but acting "too free" in public :) that would be not acceptable.

In the UAE a non-Gulf Arab woman wearing an abaya is considered to be a prostitute, as many prostitutes wear abayas to cover their "work clothes."   I never heard that it was considered the same in Qatar, but if you seem to be getting an increase in unwanted attention, that could be the reason.

But I am a Muslim and I wear an Abaya to work since it is almost mandatory to wear it in my organization.

Its not for looking unattractive/attractive/hot/cold. it is to cover the body soany ohter eyes can not penetrate and blush on body,

word ABaya is here ,somewhere is naqab and Burqa meaning is same to cover body ,which empower women .

in case any male or female is nude and some one knock the door .whoever r u ,from anywhere of world u r, u surely put some clothes on ur body. why ?? what difference it make ???

what difference if not put clothes ???

Similarly covered women can work /walk/play/can go hospital /market with and without husband  public place ,as she is feeling free that she is covered and nobody cares now

if its only culture ,it should by only Qataris,,culture can not be spread in world level, From Afgan to Iraq Biggest part of world means indiapak srilankabangladesh to france.

i do agree that some muslim and non muslim take it as a fashion.

But proper clothes is mandetory for both women and men.non of us working in office @nude.why

Again, thanks for giving me ur 2 cents guys... appreciate ur honest opinions.Well...as long as I dont see a tag at the back of the abaya that says...for Arabs only or the shopkeeper telling me "sorry ur not allowed to buy 'em, ur not arab" or worse, someone shouts at me "Poser!" then i guess im allowed to wear one.

Sorry to disagree with you, I think I must because its a potential misconception that might spread among those who don't know Islam well.We are discussing Abaya and The messenger of Allah (pbuh) didn't coin the word 'Abaya' and designed it for for the young girl. So producing it as a proof that abaya is Islamic doesn't make sense. Modesty is Islamic.Originally, Abaya was meant to make a woman unattractive. The idea behind the Abaya or any sort of veil was based on making one of the two genders look unattractive to retain morality in society. But since it was basically a brainchild of men then the Abaya had to go to the weaker and back then uneducated dependent gender. In the origin of Islam, nothing of what we call "Abaya" nowadays, was mentioned. The texts of Quran were clear in promoting clothing decency and modesty without restricting it to a certain type of clothes, color or design. It was one of those things which were left wide open to what fits the era one is living. It's interesting to note that despite religion's flexibility women are still following this dress code like the desert woman who lived at the Arabian peninsula 1400 years ago. Ironically the supposedly unattractive outfit has now been transformed by young Muslim girls to a somewhat "hot" dress with colors, patterns and expensive fabric, but then that's the nature of a woman, to try to look beautiful.

I don't think on such issues at all..

Its their (who wears abaya) culture...if we are comfortable in what we wear out, same way it happens to them...

Infact, it think many look gorgeous when they wear STYLISH (few) ABAYA with beautiful embrodery embedded in it...:))

proof that it is islamic...and not like you said QATARI CULTURE..."Ayesha (r) reported that Asma’ the daughter of Abu Bakr (r) came to the Messenger of Allah (s) while wearing thin clothing. He approached her and said: 'O Asma’! When a girl reaches the menstrual age, it is not proper that anything should remain exposed except this and this. He pointed to the face and hands." [Abu Dawud] Ibn Qudama in al-Mughni (1:349) explained that showing the face and hands are a specific dispensation within the general meaning of the hadith "All of the woman’s body is considered her nakedness [to those outside the mahram relationship or her husband]." (al-mar'atu `awra)

plus why someone would want to pretend to be anything other than they are, is an entirely different matter

ok I understand this but reality is, some places and/or events will not grant you admittance because of dress code

Every non-Qatari woman that I have come across wearing an Abaya is wearing it to try and pretend to be Qatari, not for religious reasons.

Nowhere does it state in Islam that you must wear an abaya or wear a veil, so the "Islamic" reason is nonsense.  Abayas are tribal/cultural, not Islamic.

Flame on, my QL friends...flame on....

Lol, anyone can wear an Abaya. But if someone goes on the current trend of TIGHT fitting ones with shiny stones and designs, without the Hijab, and with DRAG makeup or in some cases they just let it all fly back while they walk into a mall making it look like an advocate coat.So whats the purpose of wearing the Abaya again, if you want to show your body to the world? lol, when I see the other nationalities wearing an abaya apparently they dont do it to cover their body, they do it to look pretty and to look Qatari :) Correct me if Im wrong. Hope your not one among these people.Once I was in Landmark and I saw a Qatari (I guess) with an open Abaya wearing Super man tee inside. What the devil did she want to potray? Lord Almightey knows alone.

I was just about to post the same thing... here is my otherwise irrelevant two cents:  I have been in many areas and functions where abaya is not an option, it is mandatory.  As a *white* woman, I wouldn't think twice about people staring at me, thats their problem, divert your gaze etc... perhaps you are bit nervous at first, but you will become increasingly comfortable and not be concerned at all you will be proud of yourself

You should be proud that your covering now because of your religion. Some convert and cant manage to cover with abaya at all. Maybe the strange looks are only in your head. Good luck and Ramadan Kareem!!

thanks for the  reply guys..like i said i was just curious what others really think.i just reverted to islam and i always feel that wearing the abaya doesnt give me the right coz im not arab and all.. i thought the purpose of wearing one is not to attract attention  but out in public i always get this strange look?..or maybe im just paranoid.
