Do women wear open toe or closed toe shoes in Qatar? What is an acceptable height of heel? What women's shoes are accepted in Qatari culture? Are expat women held to the same standard (regarding shoes) as qatari women?
Hi Keiko and welcome. Hope you come on over! You will love Ed City. Don't worry too much about dressing since, after all, Ed City is a collection of US universities! To be absolutely strict and correct (which many aren't), wear at least 3/4 length sleeves and skirts below the knee. No cleavage. That's all! I myself prefer loose and flowing so I wear long skirts with sandals, no stockings and a tunic-style top. If I were to wear a suit I'd wear stockings and slides, pumps or peep-toed shoes.
Sensible shoes for work are a given, but I wasn't sure if open toed shoes were acceptable for work.
I generally wear mostly professional looking skirt suits with jacket and heels. HR told me that it was imperative to cover the arms and all sleeves should fall below the elbow.
HR did not mention covering the legs to the ankle. I am not certain if skirt suits or business dresses are OK and if so, must a woman wear tights to cover her legs under the dress? This could be hot - as in high temperature -- as opposed to a hot trend.
Today I found a a great photopage authored by "Just a mom in Abu Dhabi". Her pictures of the Villagio are facinatingly beautiful The page links over to her online store.
There is a clothing item called "inner wear" that covers the arms like a sweater or long sleeve underwear worn under a short sleeve blouse. Is this expected in the heat?
You can wear ANY shoes you like here, and there are some great shoe shops too. Agree with Scarlett about Qatari women's shoes - some of them are works of art, and they are SO high it probably explains why they have such a sedate, slow walk! Oh, and why their drivers have to stop right outside the Mall to pick them up!! Enjoy!
trust me, you cannot outdo the Qatari women in the shoe department! They have the most amazing shoes ever!! How they walk in some of them, with the abaya on, is a phenomenon I haven't mastered yet but am working on it!
So..bring whatever shoes you like...and wear them!!
If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the main difference between a dog and man.
You are totally free to wear whatever kind of shoes you want. The style of shoes that women were here may be different than our style but it is just a fashion thing, no rules.
But just have in mind that the AC in the offices is often working with maximum power and if you are a cold hand/feet person you will dream of closed toe shoes (personally I was dreaming of woolen socks:-) and it was in June!!!
Just bring a little of both and do not worry you can find shops here to complete your collection (Nine West...)
