What's the Buzz about Sep 3?

Sept 3 is Qatari Independence Day and (from what I know) a national holiday. I've also heard that the Emir often graciously decrees the day before or after as a holiday to give people a long weekend (that would be Sunday the 2nd this year).

But the big buzz around my office is that Sep 3 is expected to just be a working day from now on and that the "holiday" has been moved to Dec 18.

Someone mentioned that this rumour is also in the latest edition of the Marhaba.

Can anyone in the know support or refute this rumour?

So a couple of Questions to ponder

- Should a national day be the day QATAR became independent?

It is quiet clear that QATAR has choosen to go down the Assesion Day Path

- so why 18/12/1878?, Why not the day Shk Jassim bin Mohd's father Shk Mohd Bin Thani began as the very first recognised Shk (ruler) of the peninsular ?

OK...some history from www.mofa.gov.qa...this will help debate what a national day or Assesion Day should be....(An additional Public holiday over 3rd sept is good for all in the state of qatar)

=====================================================================

In the aftermath of the 1914 First World War, the Turkish rule in Qatar came to an end and Qatar signed a protection treaty with Britain in 1916. However, the British influence in the country was limited to supervision of some administrative matters.

In the early 18th century, Qatar was ruled by the Al-Thani family, who take their name from their ancestor, Thani, father of Skeikh Mohammad Bin Thani, who was the first Sheikh to rule over the Qatari peninsula during the mid 19th century.

-The Al-Thani family was among a tribal group who settled for a long time at the "Gibrin" oasis in the southern Najd, before their arrival at Qatar during the early 18th century. It is a branch of the Bani Tamim tribe, whose descent can be traced back to Mudar Bin Nizar. Initially they settled in Zubara in the north of the peninsula, moving to Doha in the mid 19th century under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammad Bin Thani.

-In 1878 Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammad succeeded his father Sheikh Mohammad bin Thani.

-In 1913 Sheikh Abdallah bin Jassim, came to power. It was in his time when oil was first discovered in Qatar.

-In 1940 Sheikh Hamad Bin Abdullah ruled Qatar until 1948.

-In 1949 Sheikh Ali bin Abdallah came to power and ruled until 1960. And in that year, Sheikh Ahmad Bin Ali ruled Qatar and his reign continued until 1972.

-In 1972, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani ruled the country. On September 3rd, 1971 Qatar became independent.

-In 1995 Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani assumed power with the support and blessings of the ruling family and the Qatari people.

Dear All,

I can confirm (based on a copy of the Government document which I have now been able to get hold of)that the 18th December National Day local holiday replaces the 3rd September Independence Day holiday.

3rd September is 'cancelled'!!

Thanks for that, Sri Lankan, looks like I'd better change our subscription to The Peninsula, since it would seem to contain fuller info. than Gulf Times.

I understand that a circular was sent to Government Departments yesterday (Sunday 26th August), advising that the Sept. 3rd public holiday had been 'cancelled', in favour of December 18th - now to be 'National Day'.

What a pity that the authorities (or, at least, the Gulf Times, when reporting it) didn't say that Sept. 3rd would no longer be a public holiday when the change was announced.

We have already made all our plans on the basis of 3rd being a holiday!

They will need to change the Labour Law, of course.

What a way to run a country! Still, if they could do it themselves, then they wouldn't need us all, so we should look on such incompetence in a positive light!!

Unless you mean Sheikh Jassem bin Mohammad bin Thani who is regarded as the founder of modern Qatar. But he died in 1913.

I'm not going to try to understand how a nation can be a nation when it rips up it's national days and just decides to create new ones. Imagine American's deciding that July 4 was no longer important or any other nation just saying "Oops, that even is not worthy of commemoration anymore".

Which brings up my next question, where's the search box for the forums? I can't find it on the site anymore, or is it only active when the server can handle the searching load?
