hey QL

i am coming to work for Hyder in Doha in early September although I know Doha a little it was a few years ago and would love any info, in particular social life, sporting groups etc.

when i was last in Doha there didnt seem to be muc of an ex-pat football community. i am likely to start playing rugby as i know its good socially but football is my first love and would love to keep playing out there.

any help on football teams, how the rugby club is getting on etc would be much appreciated.

thanks

chris

UKEng - Im coming into Hyder from WHite Young Green in the UK as an engineering geologist as part of their fledgling Doha geotechnical team.

my dad is a former chairman of the rugby club so was interested to know if it was still a hub of activity, obvioulsy outside the quiet summer months!

as im arriving during ramadan whats the likley impact? i know in al ain and dubai the bars were closed with very few exceptions?

brandylady - im currently stuffing myself with fish & chips, bacon sandwiches and all the other Uk delicacies i might miss out on!

your right about loving or hating the rugby club, I like it when its quiet and they do great fish and chips, almost like home :)

Welcome matey, Well Rugby club is the best organised expat place you will find in Doha. Footie I not sure if there is an organised group playing footie.

Regarding the Social life, the rugby club do organise a few events, plus the there a number bars and clubs around Doha. Which Hyder UK Office are you coming from and what your expertise. I am an ex Hyder too but worked in Hyder Abu Dhabi a few years ago.

Anyway hope all goes well for you..

novita - thanks v much for the links, the eng v scot game looked great though as 50% scot and 50% english i might have had to play 45mins for each side!!

anyone got any comment on the rugby club socially, i knnow its the sort of place that you probably love or hate but with my former links i think it will be my starting point for socialising

send me a pm with your details and I can make some introductions into the expat football. No football until probably beggining or end of sept for obvious reasons....
