he guy... i'm back in Doha and brought my net along with me! just waiting patiently for Ramadaan to end, so that I can start playing again. I'm soooo out of shape and waiting to get into the swing of things.

BTW... We are looking for some experienced players to join the indoor league. There's a practice session this Friday at the American School... It's a Philipine league and they are allowed players from other nationalities to join their teams... PLayed last year and it was loads of fun!!!

...they've been playing there for three weeks now, and the League games will start next week.

Join in if you are interested, as they have both male and female teams. or come around to watch and network yourelf in some way or the other?

Oh no, that was just my suggestion.

I actually prefer indoor volleyball because it's padded. That means we can dive for the ball, and less injuries.

So, maybe we can try that one in Wakrah Barwa?

there's an outdoor court in wakrah barwa... its quite big & carpeted 1...!

rEzyz, the guys here before would just put up a net in the public beach near the Hotel Intercontinental. It was Zaheer's I think.

Oh, I remember, there's a net in the Diplomatic Club beach! I was there few months ago. I'm not sure though if we can use it easily. Do we have to be a member of the club? Or will having lunch on the nearby resto give us access to the beach as well? Can anyone advise please?

Indoor courts are hard to find though in Doha. It'd be easy if there's anyone here who's a member of a community village (like QP or Qatar Foundation) who can gain access to facilities.

So I saw: there are some people love and want play the best sport (volley ball), I used to play as middle hitter, so for sure we NEED a setter. I don't know where we can play, what about the people that i read in the previuos post? And we should see how many we are, and the roles we use play... I don't know, we can see if is possible rent a ground. any other idea?

Yeah, at least one setter, I want Tchacko1975. Just so you know my desire for a good setter is because I played middle, and opposite in college, but on beach I play best left side. Some setters can only set one direction really well, and consistancy when jumping from sand is very helpful. Oh yeah and at 35, jumping from sand is not as easy as it used to be:). I cannot wait to play!

Just curious if we have any setters, they make a world of difference. Also, do the indoor gyms have th courts setup for volleyball? Sounds like there are no permanent beach courts. I should be out in a month, I am game to play, fine with 2-6 person

I played a little during college and do want to revive it here. My game might be a little rusty nowadays but maybe after a few games and practices we will all get better.

I'm away for the summer back in South Africa... will be back in Doha around 25th August, and will bring my beach volleyball set along with me.... will definitely look at reviving the Friday social games and getting a group to start playing again.... may have to start a new threa at that stage though!

In the meantime, enjoy the heat and yep we all wanna play some volleyball again!!!

Am spending some time with my parents, who will be taking off back to the US in 3 weeks. I been also busy with more frequent Bahrain trips and some new relatives who came to Qatar that I had to take care of and show their way around.

will set up the court aound 2:30pm.... so as to claim some land to play on! The beach gets pretty full after 4pm so the earlier we start the better.... remember... friday afternoon games are open to all of all levels, nationality and age.... just be prepared to have a great afternoon playing volleyball!

Yes, we're still playing on fridays at 4pm, although there had been a gap of a couple of weeks due to holidays and weather.

Had a good session yesterday and will be there (beach s of intercon) next week, weather permitting, inshallah.

If not, is it possible to organise the event again, so that we can start playing..

I went down to the beach yesterday after the game was cancelled, and it was great down there nice breeze hot but bearable 1 game at a time, lets get this set back up, I seen a post that someone had a volleyball court with lights lets talk to them to see what we can arrange, maybe some night games, nice and cool, we'll see you guys take care.

whats the plan for V ball friday?

I went there yesterday for the matches. The first one was between Qatar Sports Club and Police Club. The second was Al Arabi vs Al Rayyan. They contracted some players from Cuba and Russia as well.

Hi JOEBARNESNZ..We play socialy at intermediate level in teams of 5 and many more from the beach join us.

We could, however, come in with a team of 5 to play if you have a team or whatever.

Otherwise, you could always join us at the public beach south of the Intercon. We're there every Friday from 3-6pm.

Holders Al Arabi meet Al Rayyan in HA Volleyball final

DOHA, May 22, 2009 - Defending champions Al Arabi will meet Al Rayyan in the Heir Apparent Volleyball Cup final on Sunday 1845 hrs at the Al Arabi club.

In Friday’s semifinals, Al Arabi trounced Police club 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-16, 15-13). While, Al Rayyan outclassed Qatar club 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-17).

It took 2hrs on Friday to the title holders, Al Arabi to see off Police whom they had beaten 3-0 in the previous encounter on Thursday.

Al Rayyan on Thursday beat the same rivals 3-1.

A press-final press conference will be held at the Qatar Volleyball Asooacition headquarters 1200hrs.

Final:

Sunday, 1845hrs at Al Arabi SC.

It's been a while. I hope I can come later. I miss playing in the beach!

hey.... for all of you who wanna watch some volleyball.... there will be volleyball matches between the local clubs every night from 20th May to 2 June at Al Arabi Sports Club.... Matches will take places at 5:00pm and 6:45pm every evening....

I have a copy of the fixtures.... so whoever wants it.... let me know and i'll rty to get them to you somehow???

It was a typical summer day at beach, warm with little breeze, but never kept us from playing one game after another.

Hi all.... I'm up for the early game as the beaches are pretty quiet at the time.... but as you know.... I'll definitely be there at 3pm if that's the time everyone else is okay with..... the problem we might have then though is lack of space, so we may just have to go down and set up the court earlier in the day before the crowds arrive!

I hope Fairgrace managed to retrieve the court last week as I he was caught up late afternoon??? I unfortunately moved to a new location much further out of the city, so it's not that easy for me to get to the beach as before

BTW.... the wind only makes the game more interesting and unpredictable!!! ;)

Hmm we quit playing football on Friday afternoons so I may join again if you play afternoon (As I mentioned above I am going diving early in the morning) but of course in case that the temperature shall be at bearable levels to play volli. ;)

good to have you guys back!!! it's been getting lonely out there! LOL

anyways.... we've shifted the morning sessions to an early slot as it's just way too hot to play between 11am and 2pm.

so far, Empmad, fairgrace and myself have been there to play the early slot, and there have been a few regulars on the beach who have joined us as well... however it does get frustrating when the bulk of the of the players on court are new, and we end up teaching more than playing!

so please guys.... get out of bed earlier and join us at 7:30am.

I'm sure some of you have been starved of volleyball and are looking to get back onto the court!

FAIRGRACE - I'm still bumbed I couldn't help out with the net last friday, did you manage to get it?

OXY - no excuses!!! the wind was not bad on friday...

Yes, the weather is getting hotter and we need to find a solution but I am going diving early in the morning on Friday. So I cant make it early in the morning. In my home town we were meeting afternoon at the beach with people and were playing some beach volli and jumping into the water. (No need to mention that the looser team was buying the drinks :)) But I think the weather wont let us to do so here in Qatar.

IMO indoor seems to be the best solution for May,June, July, August and even September.

BTW, Flo I am trying to arrange some basketball games at Ritz Carlton I will get in touch with you when I can arrange.

We had quite a couple of games on the 9 - 12 slot....

Met some guys on the beach with some pretty good skills, and even got in a few two-a-side games!

It's getting quite hot out there between 10am - 2pm, so i'm gonna suggest we start earlier to catch the good weather!

I'll be available from 7am... or earlier... that way we can get in some early morning games, and not have to worry about the heat.

If any of you are able to come in that early, let's chat about it here and throw around some ideas!

hey guys..... it's mid-week, and time to get the planning up and running!

I've got both nets with me.... so there's nothing to worry about when it comes to getting them up on friday... after everyone left at 330pm on friday.... quite a couple of players joined in from the public.... some guys from Turkey, a few from Italy, and who knows where else???? ....oh...and our Nigerian friends from week 1, were down at the beach again!

eventually packed up just after 5pm...

well then.... would be great if we could get the entire crew down there this friday! we difintely need some of the stronger players to join us! In fact, it worked out well to have both nets set up, as it allowed those who just wanted to knoc about for fun, to do so!

hi all, i was down at the beach again last night, and the weather was wonderful!

there was a bit of tide two days ago, that washed away heaps of sand, however it did not directly affect our playing area. if anyone has a garden spade, please bring it along quite early so that we set up the court before 9am!

tomorrow we can work on getting both courts going!

I've been watching the current season live on-and-off. I think they are in the semi-final round now. Usually they play in Al Arabbi and Al Sadd sports club. Lately it's been hard being in the loop since schedules are not being posted regularly online (via http://www.qatarolympics.org/). It's really a frustration.

I think Al Rayyan has a good shot. They just need to up their floor defense. They have excellent attackers.

@zinc: Really hope we can secure an indoor venue. Although it's a wonderful experience playing in the beach, it's just not dive-for-the-ball-friendly.

got to the beach and no one down there.... pity though... was windy till about 2pm, then it settled and the weather there was great for playing!

This week has been one of the busiest for me in a long time. This is the first time I check the thread since Saturday and yes it's unusually quiet! We'll I am out of town this weekend and so is Adel.

Being a Wednesday, I suggest that we go ahead and stick to the PM session (1-4pm) on Friday so all have a solid plan to decide on.

There were at least 7 of us down at the beach at different intervals today and by 1pm the weather still hadn't improved...

we've called off the game, so if anyone else is still planning to head down today, don't bother as the wind is picking up!

I like the idea of playing tomorrow if people are up for it?.... if not, we'll just have to hold out till next week and pray that the weather is good!

Well I'm going to head down now, but if no-one around I'm on for tomorrow.

I just got home. The rain is continuous and there are pools of water (big and small) everywhere. My mom just told me now there's actually a "tropical storm"(?).

I stood there in the beach (it was so cold) for about an hour before somebody got me a lift. God, to think I was so ready I had my sunblock on! I hate this feeling. :-(

The rain does not show sign of stopping. Would the core memebers consider playing tomorrow? The weather is forecast to be cloudy.

Just had a look at the detailed weather and suggest we review at mid-day.

ZINC just called me from the beach with his assessment: no wind .. light rain. The playground is a little wet but we could play just fine.

So we're going ahead with our game today but moving the starting time to 1:00pm. Come down and join us. We'll be there until 5:00pm.

As far as tomorrow is concerned, the weather does still seem to be poor, but no reason why we shouldn't call it first thing in the morning.

It is possible to arrange for an indoors volleyball court.

The Independent Schools will be willing to rent out the court. We are now renting indoors court for soccer.

You can obtain a list of Independent School from the SEC website www.sec.gov.qa which also includes location, name and contact number/email for the school operators.

Given that many are too excited about tomorrow's game to let go of the plan, members of the core team has decided to keep plans as is. Grilling for lunch, however, is cancelled.

We'll continue to keep eyes on weather forecasts and will post one last message in here early in the morning.

I know I don’t have the authority (yet) to plan or replan but my suggestion is that: if the volleyball is cancelled tomorrow due to rain and wind, we can always reschedule to Saturday. The weather forecast for Saturday look a little bit happier. Please comment.

Pepe dont worry so much about skill level the point is to make new friends and have a little fun on the day off.I cant seem to shake the rust off my game either but i have no knees left, thats my story and im sticking to it, any way see ya next week.

It's good that I had done some backreading on the thread before I left, else I'd be in the same situation as guy.doha's. I was supposed to come around 10-11am as well.

I felt embarrassed many times because I'm really a newbie in playing the actual game. But it really helped that the guys are nice and very encouraging. I promise to be better next Friday. I'm gonna' buy a ball to practice on.

Nice beach, by the way. Very accessible. The West Bay buildings as backdrop are awesome.

By the way, I saw the last match between Al Arabbi and Al Rayyan. I think what's keeping the red squad up in the standings is their floor defense, particulary their excellent libero (who I think is a Filipino?). Because in terms of offensive power, Al Arabbi is pretty much even with Al Rayyan (which has two very formidable european attackers- one of them I think even played in Italy A1).

So far i've basically been cycling to the beach where we play and back... only about 20km. But it would be good if i could find some like-minded nutters who'd be interested in forming a group. if not.... i could always meet up with you down at the beach to peper and knock about the volleyball for an hour.

to those who are new to the thread....

we have a core group of around 8 players... who are regularly there every friday... these are the ones who usually take the time to be there around the 9am - 11:30am slot... those who don't want to spend the full day playing, go home after that slot and some of us head off to mosque for jum'aah prayers.

we resume playing around 1pm, and play an afternoon slot till 3:30pm or 4pm.... depending on how many new faces join us and how well the day is going?

so far we have had many people join in at the beach and knock around, but these players tend to be there by chance, and are usually once-off visitors.

for the core group we usually organise some lunch or snacks depending on who brings what?

we thus encourage anyone who plans to join us to bring some drinks/water/snacks etc. that will see them through the day.

you are welcome to grill and bring your family and friends along...

it's open to all nationalities, and we are basically there to play some good volleyball, make new friends, and have something great to do on our Fridays!

as the numbers grow, we will look at playing at different locations,and as summer approaches, we will be looking for an indoor venue.

hey smart_legend, oh yes, there were indeed volleyball games! its my first time to came there last friday, met up with the guys and played a few sets. twas cool...they told me they started as early as 9am; i was there past 11am and played till past 1pm...it was beach volleyball game cum socialization as you would be meeting them and be invited to join them in eating the food they bring.

if u dare to come next friday, i'd advise you wear rubber shoes (silly though as it may sound as we're playing beach volleyball)...d sand is not that fine there so u might hurt your feet. i hurt mine.

hey there..... the morning sessions 9:00am to 11:30am was quite good. A bit windy, but that added to the challenge of it all. Most of last week's group was there, and a some new members, so i'd say it was a pretty good turn-out!

The afternoon session was okay, but a bit loose in terms of playing skill. hopefully next week we can get both nets up if the weather allows, and this will accomodate the more able/competitive players who wanna play a couple of serious matches?

in that way we can have one court for the social players and the loads of new participants who join in just for the fun of it. I must admit though, that some of these kids are pretty skilled!

hope to see more players turn up as we go along.... and don't let the weather put you off.... pretty soon we won't be able to enjoy then sun and sand the way we are now!

I checked with the Cabana Club at t he Ramada Hotel, it turned out they only have outdoor volleyball court and its only for members .

Just wanted to let you know, and will keep looking around for indoor courts.

Its great to see the volleyball group being created, am a bit confused to get my way through it though, but its fun:)

I wish we could finally set up our own group here in QL so that we could post some interesting facts about Volleyball such as Rules and Regulations, players profile, etc...

Just thought of sharing some interesting facts I came across:

1. The beach court measures 26.25 feet by 52.5 feet (8.00 m × 16.00 m), while the indoor court measures 29.52 feet by 59.05 feet (9.00 m × 18.00 m).

2. Players alternate service, but are not required to rotate positions.

3. It is legal to cross under the net as long as doing so does not interfere with the opponents' attempt to play the ball

4. Teams change sides of the court at every combined multiple of 7 points. For example, if Team A has 10 points and Team B also has 10, then the next point will cause both teams to switch sides, the total score of 21 being a multiple of 7. On the third set (or game), teams change sides of the court at every combined multiple of 5 points.

Playing with a team of univ students? I remember when I was 18 :). I was cycling around 20 kms to meet my friends at the volli court and was playing around 2 hours and cycling back 20 kms and was going to beach and swimming. But that sounds so far to me now :). I guess indoor would be much better because you cant play with so many people at the beach.

btw, i have a volleyball net inside my car. my ball is not really good anymore coz it hasn't been used all the time. i mean it was stocked inside my car how many months now or a year. anyhow, u've got ur ball right. and i have net. we need only a pole to stand for our net. i prefer not the invest for this coz this is just a temporary. soon we will meet some players here in Doha and hopefully we could play indoor.

if u guys know or somebody might initiate to visit some sports clubs here in Doha, they are accepting reservation there but i dont know how much is the price per hour.

Thanks Zinc for looking around and coming with different options.

I found come sets on ebay.com, but they are around $400, and only ships within USA.

Here is what I personally think.

I think we can continue with the normal set we used yesterday, it wasn't bad at all, but if you guys want to improve it a bit, we can go with option 2 in Zinc's above msg, with the stronger poles.

But I really dont think its worth of investing in such an expensive set , because as we were talking yesterday, it will be maximum another 1 to 2 months till we can not play on beach anymore due to the very hot weather.

If we know we that we will be able to use the set for long time, then I would not mind investing in the set, but to get it, and only use it for another 3-4 times, it won,t be worth it.

If we are willing to invest in something I would rather invest in renting an indoor venue, or even we can share the cost of going to a private beach with better, cleaner, and softer sand.

So, in the time being, I think the set we have is great for our needs at the moment.

Hi all.... did some scouting around this morning and we have some options as far as nets go...

1 - Continue with the current set of poles... No cost, but the may need some work to make them a bit more solid.

2 - 32mm diameter Galvanised Poles cost about QR55 for 3m length.... they are stronger and thicker. But we would need someone who could cut and make up a set of poles for the volleyball. They also come in 40mm - 50mm thicknesses... I'm looking at following up on this option for now.

3 - Beach Volleyball Set - Sports Corner Co. on Salwa Rd sells a complete set that they get from the UK... Guy there tells me it retails for QR2400 but I glimpsed the cost price, which is around QR1900.... so if anyone wants to invest in the own good quality set... this is an option.
