Are you happy living in Qatar?

DOHA: Qataris are happier than citizens from developed countries of Europe and Asia, but despite enjoying the highest per capita income in the world (PPP terms), the wealthy citizens of the energy-rich Gulf state are surprisingly less happy than Emiratis and Omanis, according to the recently launched World Happiness Report 2013.

Qatar rank 27th in the list of 156 countries surveyed for the United Nation’s Happiness Report, much ahead of some of the world’s most developed countries such as Singapore (30th), Spain (38th) Japan (43rd) and Italy (45th).

However, Emirates and Oman, whose per capita income is much lower than that of Qatar, ranked at 14th and 23rd positions, thus, proving the fact that economic prosperity or financial wealth is a poor measure of one’s social well-being.

The US (17th position), the world’s richest economy, for instance is less happy than Mexico, while Kuwait (32nd) and Saudi Arabia (33rd) are much happier than Iraq (105th) and Iran (115th).

The Middle East has by and large shown a greater dip (-0.637) in the happiness quotient between 2005-07 and 2010-12, while Latin America and Caribbean (+0.435) have witnessed highest rise in the happiness index during the same period.

The article talks about Qataris, not expatriates! Who would not be happy being in their own country and enjoys the highest capita per head other only the lazy ones or uneducated ones? But hey, it's their fault if they are lazy or uneducated. Their government give them all facilities to educate themselves.

Regardless of Nationality, there are actually people in the society that feel happy if there fellowmen are suffering.. I don't want to mention the race but this has been the culture I felt here.. Its quiet disgusting & sad but that's my experience.. I Hope people will grow up a long with its economy and gov't should do something to eradicate or minimize the situation like this..

5. Sweden?

6. Canada?

14. UAE?

17. USA????

36. Thailand?

Obviously this report is full of crap, if Sweden was a "Happy Country" the whole world would be dead right now, with their highest rate of suicide!

And Canada? Seriously, I wonder how many people love living in snow most of the year and be happy about it!

USA is in crisis every where... Depression is seen on people's faces, people are jobless and homeless all over... 17th????

UAE & Thailand are some of the most active and fun countries in the world... Why are they pushed all the way far?

Where's the logic? lol, People are actually dumb enough to believe this stupid report!

once USSR wanted to be the master of the world and Pakistan ruined its dreams(Alhamd-o-lillah).Now another so-called super power wants to put the blame for its defeat on Pakistan. If one is ripped so much, he should take long leave and try to soothe his feelings.

Rip, whether you can or you can not believe it.. who cares? too bad that you "CAN NOT"... whatever it is... it is always pathetic when a man "can not"..

but anyway.. It's not about a belief of some little insignificant midget... it is a fact. you like it or not.

By the way, Pakistan is exactly as failed state as any of your country's states...

I never knew life to be happier, AlHamdulillah! And one of the things that fills me up with much joy and gratitude is my life here in Qatar.

Pakistan is a failed state. Daily sectarian murders and large parts of the country the govt is not even in control of. People using blasphemy laws to settle scores and young girls shit for trying to get an education. That's not to mention nurses being killed for giving vaccinators to save kids from polio.

On the plus side it is the first time in pak history that an elected govt served its full term and was replaced by another.

As Ian Botham once said, a great place to send the MIL

Yeah, it is interesting almost every comment up there indicates that they are happy in Qatar. On a personal note, I am indifferent. I think a lot of guys in my shoes are really frustrated in Qatar and are going back to their respective countries of origin. Qatar promises prosperity, but reality on ground offers something else. Tell me, how can i be happy if I work and my dues are not paid and it seems normal and I find myself powerless. Food for thought!!!

Rio Cord there you go once again after Pakistan calling it a "failed state". Recently you were quick to pour out your dislike of Islamabad as it had the word "Islam" attached to it.

Possibly you need to really update knowledge of the meaning of a "failed state". At the present level it is indeed very pathetic.

Happiness is not something one "gets" by things happening...happiness is something one has to create!

The level of happiness depends on the person, not on circumstances.

What they are talking about is joy, and joy is fleeting.

Although, I think the level of happiness is very low in people here...maybe because they do not know that it is up to them to create the level they wish to have. If they make it dependent on outside circumstances...well...then it does look rather dreary.
