Hi there - can someone please tell me if there are any aussies gatherings in Doha?
My family are thinking of relocating there. We are from Melbourne.
Just want to know how the Aussies feel and are they generally happy living there?
Is it a good place for a family? Good schooling?
How does it compare with living in Melbourne? Can you get aussie TV there?
Is their heat comparable to our heat here in summer ie dry and sometimes really hot!
Thanks!

Hi magpie,

My hubby will be pleased to hear you are a collingwood supporter. He is brain washing our son (2.5 YO) as we speak.... Our son got the jersey the day he was born. I'm a blues supporter, sad really. We can't really watch the game where blues play pies together or we'll kill each other. The pies lost to Brisbane last night by 93 points, he was very very very unhappy....

Cheers!

Yes die hard Collingwood supporter. I play footy wth the kids inside kicking end to end with a ball we brought over. The oldset thinks he is Buckly.

Racism is present in all communities and no worst than in some areas of Australia. My wife is Indonesian and she has not found any real issues with any one here. She socializes with some of the Indonesian community.

You will be pleased to know there are some good Thai restaurants here.

Good old Collingwood forever……

Hi magpie,

Thanks for the tips! You are not barracking fro Collingwood by any chance are you??? My husband is a mad collingwood supporter!

The gatherings sound great. The heat I think I may be able to cope with as I live part of my life in Bangkok so the hair condition hopping is nothing unusual. The only fear I have is the level of racism I hear of. Is it bad? I'm an australian with Thai origin and I hear that some asians are treated a bit like second class citizen. I have grown to love and being very comfortable with the level of great tolerance with other cultures in Melbourne. My husband is an aussie so I think he should be fine.

Do you know if the asians ( I guess the locals are asians too, but you know what I mean) are treated differently,if so, how?

I think if it is not confrontational I can cope with, especially if I just hang out with fellow expats I should be ok?

Thanks again!

Turtle,

You would not be the only Aussie here, their is a few of us sunnying ourselves on the the shores of Doha. Generally enjoying ourselves but this is not Australia. We feel very safe here with no safety concerns expect for the driving but been a Victorian your driving style should fit in OK

The Aust / New Zealand 'group' do meet on a regular basis with various activities from a regular monthly pub night, formal ball, golf days, anzac dawn services, to a christmas bash for the kids.

We do not get Aust TV but do receive a couple of AFL games a week.

Schools and housing are the biggest concerns with places in a good school hard to find. Try Newton International as they do have Australian teachers and last time I heard had spots available.

The summer heat is barely tolerable however you go from your a/c house, to the a/c car to the a/c shops. It's the couple of steps in between that is hot. The humdity is the killer.

If you are looking to transplant yourself into an Australian lifestyle this is not the place for you but if you are willing to adjust and make do, then look at the experience. I relate Doha to a small country town their is alway something to do but only one of everything. If you are looking for the city life go to Dubai.

cheers.
