Moving on ... Simple scuffle, involving youngsters wielding guns ... Righto! That's cause for concern. Nothing untoward happened in the current situation which has been brought under control but in future, what if some rash youngsters get into similar altercations and an innocent bystander gets killed in the crossfire?

mozaismyhero - I have seen some of your posts recently and you do seem to be very bitter - things happen everywhere in the world and the reality is not always reported. It is also true that if you really dislike this place as much as your profile portrays, why don't you go back to where you came from?

To sum this tedious thread up, can we agree that Qatar is safer than where we came from and move on??

:)

Qatari's can own all the guns they want MN. Expats aren't allowed to own them.

A scuffle between some persons which led to a few shots being fired? I’m too bored to laugh!

And why were those young kids having guns on them? I thought the possession of guns was illegal in Qatar. No?

By anonymous• 6 Aug 2012 08:52
anonymous

Agree ...

Agree for the first time on rizks comment. As eid is approaching, young qataris go to shops to buy toy pistol guns and fire them in air. It causes no injury, only the birds get injured. Since in this incident only the birds got injured, it is a simple scuffle.

It reminded me of my childhood days in QATAR. Used to buy these pistol and water guns.

By anonymous• 6 Aug 2012 08:22

It describes it as a simple scuffle. In English you wouldn't use the phase simple scuffle and gun shots being fired in the same sentence. Biased reporting again.

True, "Qatar is relatively safe compared to most but it's not the crime free paradise some will claim. Just not reporting the crimes doesn't mean they do not happen."

Yeah, but on the other hand, the non-reporting is actually supposed to be protective of the public, so as not to create unnecessary panic, while the shurta is to handle things. That's the big picture, of course. Implementation is another thing.

By britexpat• 4 Aug 2012 15:44

It all depends on what was being reported..

Qatar is relatively safe compared to most but it's not the crime free paradise some will claim. Just not reporting the crimes doesn't mean they do not happen.

For instance in the first 3 months of this year the MOI received 350000 calls relating to crime! That's huge for a country of only 1.8 million

Assassination of Chechen former president in 2004 with Russian involvement and the car bomb incident at Doha players in 2005, these are the main incidents which I ever heard since 1982.

TFS, MIMH. I was only there from August 2008 and was not aware of earlier incidents.

Picked this out from your link though, ""Al-Qaeda has threatened Westerners in the area" - so this was in 2005 and there was a wall street journal article in January this year about Al-Qaeda opening office in Qatar...

/Anyway, apologies to OP, for going off tangent. Back to thread track.

Yes Qatar is relatively safe compared to the majority of countries in the world, that is not in doubt. (Although crime levels are rising quickly)

The Doha players bombing is a well known incident in Qatar in 2004/5. It was carried out by an Egyptian QP employee killing the director of Doha players. I suggest you research it.

Doha Player was easy to find as it was reported in the foreign press at the time.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4365039.stm

In Qatar only happy stories are allowed to be printed, bad news gets erased..... others will remember the car chase and the shooting in Al Rayan even if you demand absolute proof!

By anonymous• 4 Aug 2012 12:47
anonymous

astrangefruit I agree completley. Dying on the road is no different to being shot for me, the end is the same I am dead.

Interesting I can't find any source for the shooting, it's like its been wiped from the record. I'm sure other QLers will remember though as it was big news for a while. It's also not the only shooting that has happened here either and mainly it is within the Qatari community. (as you find very few expats with access to guns)

By astrangefruit• 4 Aug 2012 12:43
astrangefruit

Mr Qatar,

I fully agree that Qatar has a low crime rate and Qataris deserve full recognition for that. The very fact that we are talking about the shooting is proof that it is not typical.

I would however have to disagree with your earlier comment that all road deaths are accidents and not crimes. An accident is 'any event that happens unexpectedly, without a deliberate....cause'. source Dictionary.com http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/accident?s=t

The simple truth is that most road deaths have a cause - poor quality driving by people. And we all know that this is avoidable if very simple measures were put in place and properly enforced. Hundreds of dead people young and old could still be going about their daily lives, thousands of husbands, wives, family members would not be grieving for the most senseless loss of all - to have your loved one taken because of bad road manners, being late for a meeting, or simply a constant 'I must be first in the queue' mentality - how ridiculously tragic!

I am not interested in finger pointing or attributing blame to one nationallity over another. It effects us all equally. We are all thrown together here and need to understand that we are different because of where we come from, not who we are. How can you blame somebody for where they come from? All societies are not the same in their behaviour or governance and it is naive to assume that this one should be a mirror of one where anyone else comes from. Hopefully in terms of traffic deaths however, change will happen sooner rather than later with the world focussing more and more on Qatar in the coming years. There is a responsibility on the government of the people not just to create laws, but to actually apply them. Otherwise they are a farce to be ignored with impunity as we see every day.

There are at least 20 of you out there today who will not be alive this time next month due to your or others' actions on the roads...

Until we take personal responsibility, and stop referring to these preventable crimes as accidents, we will continue to see the same scene playing out daily, just with new names and faces....

It was about 4 or 5 years ago in the Al Rayan area. One group chased another and fired shots at the other car. The car in front crashed killing the occupants. I'm surprised you've never heard of it but I guess you block this out of your memory.

How about the bombing at Doha Players probably back in 2004/2005, did you forget that as well?

From BE Comment taken from the Doha News, he's right sack the journalist. The link is not to the safest country in the world and have more to do with being a peaceful country with little chance of revolution or war.

Yes they succeeded quite well. The newspapers used to publish the court cases involving locals, shootings, murder by land cruiser, kid nappings and beatings were all featured. Then they were asked to stop publishing such stories as it made the country look bad.

But that IS the perception that Qatar has worked hard to maintain all these years and has succeeded quite well.

Agreed with Dawood that qatar will always be one of the safest countries in the world. Issues like this may occur but they are quickly controlled by the govt
