have been to london and scotland last week. went to a shopping mall in edinburgh, done with shopping/food court and i wanted to pee. you had to pay .2 pounds (almost 1.5 riyals) for that.. :) a shopping mall where we spends lot of money and make the owner rich can't even provide a toilet facility?? i thought of all the heated up arguments we had in ql when city centre doha adopted paid parking systems. i was one of them to raise the voice against management.now i am sorry about that.. :) went to the famouse museum of 'tower of london' where precious things are exhibited including the priceless kohinoor diamond which was taken by the british from india. the entrance fee was 20 pounds.( 120 riyals). this time my wife wanted to pee. we paid 20+20= 40 pounds and the ticket counter wanted 0.5 pounds more to pee... this time i had a different feeling.i felt shame for whoever responsible for that. its indeed a big shame to uk. do they really need to make profit from others ---? is it always like this or did they make hay when olympics shines? my dear brits and tourists, we need to raise our voice..

Lol! No, the Spanish might need more money to repay their debt. I think this was an initiative by the Manchester Airport to collect funds for the airport renovation. It's either 2 Euros or 1 Pound for a trolley. (Credit card users and holders of a non- Euro/ Pound bank account will have to pay few pence as surcharge and few dollars as currency conversion charge). Trolleys are new and has GPS enabled(no clue why there is a need for GPS when the airport is fully secured with surveillance cameras).

Time to introduce 'magic carpet' services!

It is bad that they charge for this. AND I am going to call it like it is, I will also say something against manchester airport. when you arrive, you have to fork out a pound (non refundable) to use a trolley, so anyone with more than one bag or a heavy suitcase is obliged to pay this and what's more if they don't have a pound coin - which most will not, they have to use the very expensive currency exchnge at baggage reclaim. What a bloody cheek. I of course have this money because I am british, but most don't. Nice welcome to britain I say. But then I believe it is a spanish company that has the license to run the airport - maybe we are helping out the poor spanish economy??

I believe that in some countries the population is more and some people start making abuse of free public things like toilets, so for countries like the uk and europe, we have a community who is less fortunate and the law can not prevent them from causing troubles, some break toilets and block them on purpose and much more damage, and when there is a fee to usage, people get prevented to enter without the need. Basically you paid to get a clean toilet with toiletpaper and water and soap. Which if it was free, the possibility would have been that it was a disgusting messy dump. So britains got a good reason to charge a small fee!

I agree to pay 50 pence to use a toilet in 'the' Tower of London is a bit awkward, but I think it might be just because of the Olympics season. I had visited the place two years ago, but I don't remember me paying and peeing!

Well there are Tower Hill toilets close by with Thames connected to it..:D

Yeah, it's a catch! "ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY WALK INTO MORDOR"

But regardless of all the above - I love UK, I spent three good memorable years!

Make a second visit in off-season mate!

Laplandsql, I am not sure why there is a charge in that Edinburgh mall for using their toilets. However, at Tower of London, I have a couple of ideas. One is that Tower of London has had a vandalism problem in recent years. Strange but true. One of the places they can get easy access to is the toilets and maybe the charge is just to discourage them a bit. Not very likely with the 50p charge but at least a slight deterrent so that the people who use the toilets properly might not be missing toilet paper or functioning air dryers or soap. Two, it is rather costly to maintain the Tower of London, hence the entrance fee charge and maybe this extra small revenue stream pays for the upkeep of the toilets they have installed in there (flushing toilets not being a common feature of an original medieval castle). A lot of the free public toilets in London have been vandalised to the point they have been shut and now we have those portable loos (which are private) which usually charges a small fee. I totally sympathise with the toilet situation you encountered in London. The number of muffins I have had to buy at Starbucks in order to use their toilet have made me put on weight.

I would not quistion that. I feel paying to use a toilet is fine as long as they maintain a clean and very hygenic toilet. I know many people mess up the toilet and leave the place derty , unhygenic and smelling and it calls for man power to bring it back to a hygenic condition. I guess the gentelman must stay back home and not go visiting places if he wants to save on toilet charges .God bless him

I'm happy to pay if the facilities are nice, sometimes in the malls in Qatar the toilets smell like the slums in Mumbai or an incontinence war zone.

However I do agree once you are trapped inside a event or place of interest it is wrong to charge you have no where else to go.

you haven't travelled much have you? I have been to malls in various countries where they charge you to take a piss. Why even the public toilets in Bombay at one point in time charged you to take a piss there.

At least in UK, EU and some far east countries you don't mind paying up to piss, because you know when you enter in there, it's clean. Try that in Bombay, I'd much rather pay them to let me piss outside the toilet :-(

@ timebandit, i am sorry if you felt offended. please check the way brit expat accepted it in his first reply. and on his grace,i am in a position to take a vacation in any part of the globe and by expensive vacation, we usually mean the hotel rooms, travelling, food and other expenses are high compared to other cities. fee to pee is not expensive, its pitiable for a country like uk to do so.

Yeah but our healthcare is free and so is our education. I don't mind paying to park and I don't mind paying to pee as long as the facilities are of a good quality and secure. The pee charge is the same in most European countries. Some facilities are free, others are charged for. The charged for ones usually have resident staff maintaining, cleaning and keeping an eye on the place.

Britain is not a cheap vacation if you are going to do the full tourist thing. If you want a cheap holiday try somewhere like Nepal where you can have a great time at a fraction of the cost.

if the authorities don't have any plan to scrap it, they should arrange something like a daily pass or monthly pass. it was quite difficult to get 20 pence and 50 pence there because those have more value than 1 pound when your dam is about to collapse.. :)

Hmm they never used to charge for toilets in the Tower Must be new...

And agreed no they shouldn't charge for toilets.. But I have never seen a shopping mall in England charge to use the toilet..

Also that is the first I've ever heard of it in Scotland

P.S. Qatar didn't build the Shard! They bought an 80% share after the other financial backers had to pull out after the financial collapse..

Mr.Laplandsql, tourist in London, was desperate to take a leak.

After a long search he couldn't find any FREE OF CHARGE public bathroom to relieve himself. So he went down one of the side streets to take care of business. Just as he was unzipping, a London police officer showed up.

"Look here, old chap, what are you doing?" the officer asked.

"I'm sorry," Mr.Laplandsql replied, "but I really gotta take a leak."

"You can't do that here," the officer told him. "Look, follow me."

The police officer led him to a beautiful garden with lots of grass, pretty flowers, and manicured hedges. "Here," said the policeman, "whiz away."

Mr. Laplandsql shrugged, turned, unzipped, and started pissing on the flowers. "Ahhh," he said in relief. Then turning toward the officer, he said, "This is very nice of you. Is this British courtesy?"

"No," replied the policeman. "It's the French Embassy."
