Can Men and Women Be Just Friends?

DeadMan.
By DeadMan.

If men are from Mars and women are from Venus, it may explain at least one of their shared beliefs: Men and women can't be real friends. Blame the sexual tension that almost inevitably exists between any red-blooded, heterosexual man and woman. Point to the jealousy that plagues many rational people when a significant other befriends someone of the opposite sex. Boil it down to the inherent differences between the sexes. It just can't be done. Right?

Wrong, The belief that men and women can't be friends comes from another era in which women were at home and men were in the workplace, and the only way they could get together was for romance. Now they work together and share sports interests and socialize together. This cultural shift has encouraged psychologists, sociologists and communications experts to put forth a new message: Though it may be tricky, men and women can successfully become close friends. What's more, there are good reasons for them to do so.

Researchers tell us that men and women can be friends. But do we really believe them? A survey of more than 1,450 members of the Match.com dating site revealed that we're an optimistic bunch:

Do you believe men and women can be platonic friends?
Yes: 83%
No: 11%
Unsure: 6%

Have you had a platonic friendship that crossed the line and became romantic or sexual?
Yes: 62%
No: 36%
Unsure: 2%

Who is more likely to misinterpret the intimacy of friendship for sexual desire?
Men: 64%
Women: 25%
Unsure: 11%

Is it possible to fall in love with someone who first enters your life as a friend?
Yes: 94%
No: 4%
Unsure: 2%

Do you hope that when you do fall in love, your partner will have started out as your friend?
Yes: 71%
No: 9%
Unsure: 20%

Who is better at keeping sex out of a platonic relationship?
Men: 13%
Women: 67%
Unsure: 20%

So are the researchers right or the above survey is correct? So its a million dollar question that comes to everybody's mind every now and then... what are your thoughts on it?

I have many male friends and haven't had the urge to jump into bed with any of them. So, yes...as far as I'm concerned men and women can be just friends.

unfortunatlly some husbands cheats their wives because of female friends of the husband and vice versa some wives cheat their husbands because of the wives male friends, the reality says that there are some clean friends who never try to cross the limits and some friends will cross the limits.

The question can men and women be friends?

Yes but with limits and the definition of these limits is different in different cultures.

Mr BOXBE, what do you mean by business level?

Business is independent of relationships. If it isn't, then you are not a professional.

Secondly, if you mean men and women can only be friends to do business.... that is a sick excuse to be friends.

I believe that man and woman can be friends

but there are many Factors could affect the friendship and might lead it to something else, For example:

1- Are they both single or both or none of them is.

2- Level of maturity.

3- Is it something they both used to do, as some men/women did't use to have friendship with the opposite sex, So in the first experience they might misunderstand their feelings.

By Straight Arrow• 29 Sep 2013 08:59
Straight Arrow

once the limits are defined then there must be no problem, and the question can man and woman just be friends have different answers based on the culture where man and woman are from.

So as long as men follow their limits, things don't change.

So you agree that it is the men who is more likely to go beyond the limit?

Well, I have never had a problem with being friends with females. Infact, majority of my friends are from the opposite gender.

I guess its really upto you, if you think in a positive way, it reflects in your actions. That is what matters.

Brit, if you see the survey questions again, you will also conclude that its the men, who often deviate from the position of just being a friend. So as long as men follow their limits, things don't change. :)

i think times have changed alot , and being friends with opposite sex is not a new concept any more ...

my very good frnd male is married to my best frnd , and we still are frnds and in contact till date.... and if i can see in past , I am 100 % sure there was nothing more than frndship from both sides ....

I guess it depends also upon your maturity level and your relationship status as well :-)

for me it do exist a good frndship between opposite gender ....

and those of my loved ones, former colleagues, etc I believe the only way a heterosexual single man and woman can ever truly be friends is if they have already gone through a relationship and mutually decided to part ways. If not one or both of them are bound to harbor not so platonic feelings about the other.

Of course this is my personal opinion and others may feel differently based on what they have gone through.
