Cheaper Flights - One-upping the System

Let me see if I can enlighten you on the roundtrip pricing from Doha to Houston and Dubai to Houston.

If I go to Expedia and book a round-trip flight from Dubai to Houston, it'll cost me approximately $760 via Qatar Airways' non-stop flight (uses a hub in Doha).

If I book that same flight from Doha-Houston-Doha, it'll cost me $1307.

Keep in mind that the Dubai flight has to come through Doha on its way to Houston and utilizes the same plane as the Doha-Houston-Doha flight.

In theory, couldn't I just save myself almost $600 and book the Dubai-Houston-Dubai and just show up in time for the Doha-Houston flight? The ticket is issued as an e-ticket via Expedia.

Actually jargon, if you tell the personnel at HOU that you will deplane in DOH rather than DXB they will probably prevent you from boarding. The airlines have a legal responsibility to make sure their passengers have the proper documentation and visas for the countries to which they are travelling and to notify the downline station of who is coming. Not to mention the legal issue of the airline knowing who's on board in case of an accident! You could possibly deplane in DOH unnoticed but I'll bet you dollars to donuts you won't fly QR again (all airlines have a passenger blacklist.) And as tallg says, what about your bags? Let me know if you are successful, I'd be interested to see how on-the-ball QR is.

UKEng - to see if QR is competitive you need to compare that flight with other airlines direct flights. For example how much is a direct flight from Dubai to KL on Emirates?

GodFather.

Baldrick direct flights and the difference in price for one ticket is not so bad.. But if you talking about a family of four then the difference is substanstial..

I am planning my summer trip to KL and beyond. So I check QA. Doha - KL - Doha the online price quoted was around 14K, same flight with Emirates is coming at just over 10K now 4K difference is substantial.. I could do all my internal flights and transfer for that price..

QA is just not competitive enough specially with this new online ticketing...

What about your bags? They wont unload them at Doha. Or will you just have a cabin bag?

Thanks for the replies fellas.

I booked the Dubai - Houston - Dubai flight.

However, on my return, I will be attempting to get off at Doha coming from Houston. I don't see any issue with this. I'll simply inform the staff at Houston that I wish to get off at Doha due to an emergency or something. I seriously doubt they'll try to charge me differently for lightening their plane load from Doha to Dubai.

The only issue would be the logistics of getting from the plane to the Doha terminal, but I figure that there will be plenty of people doing this.

Strange but true... same applies here..

i tried to book flight from Doha-Houston-Doha.. it costs around $1400... same day when i check the charges for Houston-Doha-Houston it costs half of the money!!!!!!!.

same sector just a flip of the boarding place.. but cost doubles......

so that means if i book a Houston-Doha-Houston flight and pay $730.. if i plan to use just my return flight ticket Doha-Houston as my forward journey.. i cant.. if i dont take the flight from Houston-Doha.. my whole trip itinerary is canceled... :-).

Correct, Baldrick! If you do not show up for a leg of your flight your entire itinerary will be cancelled. NB, the airlines have VERY smart people hired whose job it is to figure out if passengers are trying to circumvent the rules. Penalties are stiff for fare infractions so buyer beware!

I prefer direct flights full stop. Changing planes, hump luggage, sat in terminals waiting. Get me there, and get me there quick!

I have found that most long flights are cheaper if booked Doha-Dubai and then where ever you are going the direct from Doha.

Hi.. Its not just direct flights. Its just pure marketing startegies implemented in different markets according to the demand and condition of the respective markets.

Itsture that if first leg is not flown the rest of the itinerary gets autoimatically cancelled , since the pax is still in Dubai as per the bookings. you will end up paying a noshow or a change of reservation penalty too.

Really, i compared the prices between ETIHAD AIRWAYS & www.cheapoair.com for the Return flight from DOHA - LAHORE (Pakistan). I saved 200 riyals which is very nice for bigger families.

Keep it up !!!

QA are not the only ones doing it, Emirates have cheaper flights leaving from Qatar than if you book leaving from Dubai.

you can get of at Doha as its their hub and you 'll reach Doha before Dubai.

The comments in the thread I linked to above contains an explanation of why direct flights are always more expensive (for any airline, not just QR).

yourself on a separate Doha-Dubai-Doha ticket, get there in time to catch the Dubai-Houston flight (that would simply bring you right back to Doha where you just came from) -- but as strange as that seems it would still probably save you hundreds of dollars.

Qatar Airways must be trying to quietly screw the local population or something -- why else for these fares? I recently took a business trip and assumed I would be taking a QA flight -- WRONG! Lufthansa undercut QA's fare by over QR7000 (almost $2000 USD)!!! Amazing that the difference would be THAT much, but it was....so off to Frankfurt I went! LOL!

baldrick2dogs you are right, once i tried it and my whole ticket was cancelled, they say it was No-show, So of course you cannot do this..You can Book one way Tkt to dubai, and use this ticket, it will stay cheaper than the Doha-Houston-Doha...

In case you're interested, here's a thread discussing why direct flights are more expensive, which also talks about doing what you suggested (as I had the same idea!); http://www.qatarliving.com/node/115667

I believe that if you do not show up for the first leg, your ticket will be cancelled (... waits for Mandi to confirm....)

I don't think it will work, otherwise everyone would do it. I doubt they'll let you board at Doha when your tickets says Dubai.

I normally through priceline or other engine than with the same combination I use cheapoair ..... Good luck ... So far I get a good deal ....and for ur theory .... Brilliant ....I definitely will do it....
