Dhow Day Trip December 18th

Alumnar
By Alumnar

Hello everybody :)

As requested by many of you here comes another event!

We are organizing a Dhow Trip for December 18th, starting time to be confirmed between 9 and 10 a.m.

PerfectStranger has just been to see the boats and talk about costs. The price for each person will be around QR 75 IF WE FILL THE BOATS (one boat has a capacity for 25 people, the other one for 30 people). You will bring your own picnic baskets and supplies for whatever you need throughout the day.

We are meeting in Souq Waqif on Wednesday at 8,30 pm, same place we met to organize the camping trip. I will ask Faezi to post the details in this topic.

This event will be on a FIRST PAY - FIRST SERVE basis. Once you pay for the Dhow Trip you have your space guaranteed. This system for this event is a MUST as the cost can escalate due to people confirming and not showing up.

Throughout the next couple of days we will confirm meeting points where some of us (organizers) will be to collect money. You can then get in touch with us and arrange to meet us to pay for this trip.

Let's hope this is another memorable event and looking forward to seing many of you again :)

Good call on canceling this trip it turn out.

We would have been drenched by rain had we continued as originally planned.

Thanks Alumnar, can you also predict which way the stock market will move next week ...? ; )

oh no, I withdraw what I said, I checked the website again now and they updated FRIDAY status to be Scattered Showers. The weather will always be unpredictable during winter..

So yes lets call it off for now.

... and the weather forecast for the last 2 days was sunny/partially cloudy (???)...

My decision is to be on the safe side. I also had several PMs of people expressing their worries. If anybody wants to go ahead and organize this Dhow Trip - be my guest. I won't be doing it this time and I hope everybody understands why.

By The Observer• 13 Dec 2009 15:50

About the weather we can have a look at the forecast as in weather.com it says that all the 10 coming days will be sunny:

http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/tenday/QAXX0003?from=hrly_topnav_business

According to forcasts tonight will be the last day for this storm..

I know that no one can predict weather forecasts %100 correct but it can give us an idea at least, u can also call the Qatari weather authority for forecasts..

... with bookings due to the weather. It seems like the holidays might be called sooner if it continues raining the way it is at the moment. Qatar is flooded as it is, and we can't make plans the way things are going. Who can predict if it is going to be raining and/or storming on Friday?

I suggest we call it off for now and reschedule this trip for after New Year. This way we can arrange it with more detail and also consider safety aspects of it.

Sorry about that - but safety has to come first :)

... you are so welcome. Of course I am always thinking of our camping team and how nice it will be to see you again.

Tony and PerfectStranger are gonna look at smaller capacity boats - say 25 people. We will start with that first, then if we get more people we will upgrade it. It might end up around QR 100 as we also need to pay for the boat to take us off the Dhow and onto the Island, but still that is nothing really if you consider a days fun. We will do our own BBQ at the Island and enjoy. Self-catering is a yes for sure. Nothing wrong with that as the food on offer never suits everybody and is overpriced.

We need numbers in the next 3 days though, as we have to make a downpayment and we also need to collect the money from everybody at certain meeting points.

By The Observer• 10 Dec 2009 09:21

Thanks Alumnar for considering the prayer timing. The speed boat idea is cool too. I think the self catering option is better because QR 75 price will attract more people (with the hope that we can rich 45 people).

I will check how many of my friend want to come then I will list our names..

For now we should be able to sail off from opposite the National Museum at 2 pm, but it will have to be confirmed 4 days before the event by the Coast Guard.

I have also enquired about the rental of a speed boat for those hours to make sure that whoever wants to can get off the boat onto the Island. I am waiting for price confirmation on that too.

Previous trips were taking place from 10 AM till 4 PM.

Food served by the Dhow crew ended up to be cold and insufficient. So I recommend self catering.

We used to hire a small boat to transfer us between the dhow and the island. THat cost is extra.

... the organizer of the above dhow trip will let me know by tomorrow if we can sail off opposite the National Museum at 2pm on the 18th. I will let you know more details when he has given me a confirmation by tomorrow morning.

So now it's time to start the list!!! Please inform how many adults and children and what age the children are so we can check if we can arrange to allow the children to sail cost free. It all depends on the numbers we get together.

Remember - paste and copy the names, add yours onto the list!

Al Ajhar Dhow

Dhow Cruising or Moon Dhow Cruising

Description: Our Traditional Qatari Dhow will take you cruising around the palm tree island to view the magnificent City of Doha from the water side, then we head towards Al Safliya Island where we will anchor approximately 50 meters away from that island, during this time you could enjoy a nice swim while our chef prepares and serves the BBQ Lunch or dinner buffet. Our Dhow is equipped with safety equipments like life rings, Life jackets, Fire Extinguisher and a First Aid kit. Our Dhow also accommodates a unique closed air condition cabin & a very nice seated area on the upper deck.

Duration: 4-6 hours

Time: Day and Evening time

Price with BBQ buffet: QR 150.00 (minimum 20 people & maximum 45 people).

Price for Dhow only: QR 2000.00 week days (maximum 45 people). QR 2500.00 weekends from Thursday- Saturday (Maximum 45 people).

This boat has been used in the past for QL Dhow Trips. I have been emailed photos of the boat and I think that the capacity is perfect to keep everybody on the same boat. I totally respect your prayer times and I suggest we start the Dhow Trip at 2 pm and go on until 8 pm. We can cater for ourselves (depending on what people want). If we go for self-catering, the cost of the trip for the full boat will be QR 56 per person - we will be charging QR 75 per person to be able to buy prices and any necessary items to organize games for everybody. Please let me know your thoughts on this.

What do you all think, would you like me to check this boat out? If you would like me to forward you the photos of the boat please give me your email address and I will be happy to forward them to you.

Thanks everybody! :)))

Yea me too agree with whaiQL we muslims can't miss the prayer in this day So it would be better if trip started like last time ( 12 - 1 pm ) we can stay till night because sailing at night is nice too. Or we can make it on Saturday if the cornish is closed for the national day.

The only problem is that it is conducted on Friday when Muslims need to offer a Friday prayer starting at around 11.15 AM. So I definitely pass this.

This also happens to any rambles and field trips arranged by Qatar natural and history group.
