garbage haunted city

Abuse of public areas

Last week we went to Dukhan beach, was a dumpster....
It’s so sad to see people littering the country they live in, and not respecting such beauty...it is also sad to see such little respect for nature and for other people sharing the place.
I understand that, general public hygiene awareness is still lagging in this country. Mainly because, ( locals and expats ), alike, are so dependent on their maids, and public cleaners staff, so much that, a simple act such as taking my MacDonald's empty tray from my table to the trash bin, had left some folks with their jaws, falling into the floor. Which made me feel like a bloody veteran, who just survived a nuke attack? Having said that, I still retain well by my opinion ( from first hand, experience ),that both locals ( Qataris, as well as , expatriates, "Arabs and non Arabs alike" ), are all to some degree responsible, for the piles of MacDonald’s empty boxes, and half eaten burgers.

In my area (freez abdul aziz)near health centre in evening you can see 100s of people (one partcular nationality) gathered, smoking/drinking tea or cold drinks, chewing pan or tobacco on road and throwing in open. Area is hell in the evening and no family can go outside. Moreover these people sit & spit or throw garbage on parked cars. I approached police with photgraphs, they sent me to CID, CID sent me to Baladiya,Baladiya asked me to go to cleaning department and so on. Lastly I was tired and now learning to live in garbage till I get good place and my existing landlord agrees to return my cheques.

Hehehe....I like to point blame to the source. It's EASY to blame eeeeeeeevrything on the Government just like MANY of u do while in reality those who pollute r "PEOPLE"...Nobody wants to take responsibility for their action. I know that blaming the government is the easy way out, or should I say the "LAZY" way out ;-)

Like I said, I have yet to find ANY country where u have to submit a QR 10,000 check to camp out for a while....when ppl break the law, DON'T BLAME THE LAW!!!!....blame urselves for not being responsible adults!!!!

Qatar fines those who litter in the desert QR 10,000.... That's over 3,300 Singaporean Dollars....It requires a "permit" and a payable check just to allow u to camp out....is that harsh enough???

If you want to see a perfect developed city which strongly controls rubbish/trash is Singapore! They impose the most ridiculous litter laws of which you can imagine. If Qatar imposes these laws, you will definitely see less trash for sure. Just like Qatar, Singapore is made with diverse cultures. This mainly includes the Indian descendants, Chinese descendants, and as well as European descendants. Yet, people coincide and respect one another. I believe if Singapore can do it, so can Qatar. GO QATAR!

There are many people who come from places where littering is normal for them. The mindset for them is, "they are creating jobs for others." Well in the end, what we all should do is clean up after usage, no matter where you are from, respect Qatar and the world would be a lot cleaner place.

I never ceased to be amazed at how such simple threads degenerate into claims of racism and attacks on expats and locals. Yes, let's stick our heads in the sand and declare that the trash in the park is a conspiracy to make Qataris look bad; or pointing out the trash on the beach is an insult and tantamount to racism (never mind that Qataris are amongst the most multi-racial nationalities on earth).

Who cares who makes the mess? Qatar is awash with trash from people who litter. It makes the beaches, parks, etc. look worse. The wind doesn't help, but the real problem is that people are too lazy to walk to a garbage can. They don't have enough respect for the country to keep it reasonably tidy; or they live is such a bubble that they think they are too important to tend to their own trash.

Why not discuss how to solve the problem? My solution is severe fines and a night in jail for people repeatedly caught littering. Such measures have been very effective in countries and regions that have implemented them.

Not entirely true..

Bethselamin is a fabulously beautiful planet which attracts billions of tourists each year. Unsurprisingly, cumulative erosion is a serious concern of the local authorities. Their solution is to calculate the net imbalance between the amount of matter eaten and the amount subsequently excreted by each visitor, and remove the weight difference through amputative surgery. Thus it is vitally important to get a receipt after every trip to the lavatory while on the planet.

When I asked my grandfather how I would be able to find planets with a civilization he told me to look out for trash orbiting: the higher a civilization is developed the more trash is orbiting its home planet. This is a universally accepted law.

Yep,

been here all my life, but recently the beaches are sick thanks to more people coming here...... In my mentality, we bring it in, we take it back out! I don't know how the others are raised, but come on ppl throw your trash where it goes.

Don't expect someone to clean up after you.

other countries are forced to organize a clean the beach day but they make a fun day out of it. Designing a t shirt with volunteer beach clean up day.

Its a lot of miles of walking to clean up after others who have bad mentality to liter, but the Rewards from God to do this make us feel better.

If you analyze the situation carefully you will understand that trash is a by-product of life itself. All life forms produce trash as a result of their metabolism. The more trash an organism produces the more sucessful it is. And since Qatar claims to be the 'Richest Country in the World' it is clear that they really fancy their trash output as a sign of being highly developed.

As long you have cheap labor to clean behind the idiots, nothing will change. Every day the same scene: tissues, cups, bottles, EVERYTHING just flies out of car windows. even in the parking lot of my company, loads of garbage falls out "accidently" out of cars. same in the parking of my building.

Pointing someone into the right direction, you get an angry answer: "they have labor to clean". arrogant idiots - same all around the GCC.

Seen it too many times. Both locals and expats are to blame. It seems that people expect someone clean up after them.

It is up to us to take the first step and set an example. I remmber once being at the Corniche. a family was sitting on the grass picnicking and the kids were running around tearing ip flowers from the beds and throwing tissues everywhere. The elders just laughed at their antics :O(

in fact, the OP is concerned about the carelessness and thoughtlessness of both locals and non-locals with regards to disposing their trash.

Public beaches are filthy and its not really a great experience swimming and stepping on tins and bottles and/or floating plastic bags.

and it's a bit weird coz trash bins are everywhere but people still thinks the road/street is a big trash bins/ash tray.

ok... rant over.

I love Qatar and have found more happiness here than I have living anywhere else. However in the recent years I too have noticed a significant increase in the amount of garbage littered around in public places, namely the beaches. Solely blaming the authorities would not do, as many times people of various nationalities, despite knowing the ban on littering, still chose to do so without fear and shame. Shows a lot about their upbringing and lack of manners!

Guess some solutions would be public awareness campaigns, and making sure anyone caught is made to pay the fines, regardless of who they are.

Again I just don't get the point of most of ur topics....more importantly how u never seem to offer a solution nor highlight how it is to be implemented!!!

Totally agree with the OP. Parts of the city and the beaches too often are dumping grounds for irresponsible garbage. The problem is lack of laws and enforcement. Creating and enforcing litter laws with huge fines would be a quick way to change attitudes.
