Where IS Garvey's? I've heard so much about it but I have NO CLUE where the exact location is. I know that it's inside the European Family Club somewhere in the Industrial Area....but, I'm not quite sure where it is EXACTLY. Can anyone help???
Thanks

I heard it was open again...

are you sure it is completely shut down?

Dutchbox, lol.. was it a joke?

Garvey's used to be a typical British pub on Salwa Road, and it's closed for at least 1 year now...

it was a cool place.. some memories are still there.. :(

btw, next time when you post your reply, pay attention on the date of the original post.. this one is dated 09/03/2006.. where even did you dig it out?? :)

Hi,

I am not familiar with the location here in Qatar but is this place located in one of the blocks across Al Muntazah road? If it is then I think I've been here.

The appearance look a little bit old but I think it's how they design it to make it a little bit classic and feels like in somewhere the old time place. And about the food many don't appreciate it but I do because they mostly have a selection of standard Asian dishes and I love Asian food.

Hi could you advise what the accommodation is like at Garvey's........probably a bit late to ask as I'm already booked in there until I find somewhere permanent to live but a "heads up" would still be appreciated.

Thanks

To the best of my knowledge Garveys licence (alcohol) is based upon 'European' use, hence the discrimination.

I agree that the place is not the classiest and should be considered as a 'working mens club rather than a family club.(Official title of the place is 'The European Families Club)

However, the beer is cheaper than most places and the live sports feeds make it a must for the 'sports fan'they have live music some of which is quite good.

Food is petty basic and not too bad for the price, fish and chips, roast beef dinners etc

There is a pool and outside seating area, a function room (quite nice and available for private parties), as well as the main bar, there is also now a fully equipped gym (membership req), jacuzzi, reading and internet room etc.

Any time I have been there are people from many different nationalities, so I disagree with the posts regarding discrimination, the fact is it is a members only club, if you do not have a membership you may not get in, it is very busy on a Thursday and you really have to be in early if you are not a member and want to get in, doors close at 10pm for entry.

I now that the owners are not te racists many on this thread seem to think, as I stated previously there are people in there from all over the world, the majority are British / other European and Americans. It is a private members club and at the end of the day members come first, it is quite a small place which is busy enough with the members, allowing non members in without control would cause problems.

As has been previously stated, if you dont like or agree with the entry policy, dont go! If you do go and are not a member, go early

Well SwissLookerTwo cinched it for me. I will not waste my time attempting to take my Thai wife in this cheesy twat hole. Leave it to the Europeans and Brits. I can afford to hang out at classier joints.

Let me say categorically that they DO NOT accept certain minorities Asian, Qatari (especially), Thai, Chinese etc now if asked they will say it is in the name - European Members CLub, but having frequented the place and lived there the rule is simple "if they like the look of you, regardless and you have money to spend" then you will be welcome.

There is an awful lot of rumour and speculation about this place, if you do get "accepted" into the life in Garveys the ammenities are wonderful the pool could do with cleaning a little more food is excellent on a good day and awful on a bad day (those days are few and far between) so take you chance I think the membership is 900QR per year but that has probably changed and gone up by now.

Take Care and their is always The Rugby Club if all else fails.

But on the whole if you fit it with the "Garveys Set" good luck to you and look up all the Scottish Crew from Click/Netherfield Crowd the guys are great but coming to end of there contract.

Enjoy.

I think they should put a signboard at the entrance sayng. "Entrace limited to White Europians only"

It's their club and they have every right to do what they like. I just thought that it lacked class.

There are lots of reasons to, potentially, exclude someone. I don't think race should be one of them.

I still go there from time to time...they make a great ham and cheese sandwich.

Yes, somehow it's really offensive having told ÿou can't enter because you are not a westerner" One time, I and a friend of mine both females but having philippine and indonesian natioanlity went there and we are being stopped because we are not a club member and most specially, we are not europeans or so. I was so pissed off but then again its a matter of how to explain why.

Those clubs such as Garvey's & DRFC are being strict to non-members because they also have to protect their facilities and from the restriction of Qatar government itself. They just skeptical to whom they should let in because its not easy in Qatar to enjoy and have fun in the same way you grew up with on your own country.Freedom to choose of the way how you want to enjoy ur time like having a drink, interact with both males & females are sad to say being taken away specially if you are non-muslim, non-arab and with an asian race. "SAD BUT TRUE"

Such clubs shud not be allowed to operate Even in the mauritius people are not demarcated based on skin color and race.... There has to be some control and colonial rule has already ended

I agree with those that mentioned problems for non-whites to get in. A month or so ago, a Brit and I got there early and our Indonesian boss, (there are many Garvey's members from our company), was to meet up with us later.

The guard wouldn't let him in. Even after I went to the front, the guard told me outright that the club is for europeans. I had to go to one of the Garvey's for permission.

My boss was so pissed, he just left. I didn't blame him at all.

It's a great place to go for a cheap meal, a beer and a feeling of ye ole colonial rule. Blacks in the back door, whites in the front.

Nice.

Well that is so subjective to personal taste...

but it is great sitting out on the terrace when you want to have a really good chat with acouple of friends. The atmosphere is very conducive to losing a sense of time. It is very tranquil and relaxing... you feel like you have taken a step off the roundabout of hecticness. A respite from how busy and crowded life can be.

It is NOT the place to go to drink (unless you are rich)and make loads of new friends etc etc. It is a place to be cerebrally intimate.

There's nothing wrong with Garveys management and the family but it's the people who go there I've noticed recently has no class whatsoever! so, I may stop going there as the people who go there are war freak! keep checking other people all the time. I like hanging out for a drink next to the pool but if the scene is like this I may have to stop going there it's getting scrappy lots of scrappy people around goes to Garvey's I knew a bald, British, tall & skinny guy goes there everyday after work to hang out trying to forget he's married to his wife! he! he! he! watch out when he gets drunk he goes around and chat women up and start taking advantage and very malicious, he thinks all women fancy him! hmmm!

Just keep dancing, it will do you good!

I'm highly impressed anyone can pay for Sharq! I heard it's a 1000QAR just to get onto the Sheisha Terrace. It's nice to see other people confirming my belief that Garvey's discriminates though, thank you. Frankly I don't go there anymore, I'll let all those old white Brits have their club all to themselves. :P

I have noticed that the classier the place is, the less likely they are to discriminate on the basis of color or nationality. For example, Garveys has no class and is "selective" as to who they allow in.

Sharq Village is high class and they allow anyone in provided they are able to pay and behave. This latter point would probably exclude some of the memebers of Garveys.

I'd gladly spend a little more on the food or booze and eat else where rather than b around those kind of people ... Its really sad that entry is based on the color of ur skin .... and then people say we don't have any kind of discrimination going on against Asians !!!!

I was there on Friday night to support a friend of mine (indian guy) who was playing in a band there.

Okay, so the food is good but the crowd is awful. Trailer trash Europeans and Americans. Fat and ugly and drunk. The place is the pits.

By the way, Gypsy is right. If you are not white or you do not have a European passport it is hard to get in. I had to literally beg one of the Garvey brothers to let another QL member in (remember SL?). Also, on Friday night had to do it again to get an Indian couple in.

The place sucks but it is cheap.

No Dweller anyone is not allowed in. You can not get in unless you are European or British, or with someone who is. I went again this weekend with a Phillipino friend and they gave him a hassle at the door, and I had to cause a fuss to get in. The only people who insist that Garvey's isn't racist are the ones that hold European passports.

Garvey's is indeed the old ERA club and still has the sign up. It's very British in feel, with football and rugby on TV, fish & chips on the menu and occasional British and Irish bands in the evening. Got a good gym and a pool, too. Quite a nice place for an al fresco lunch.

The roundabout mentioned in VW's directions is officially known, and known to most taxi drivers, as Azizya R/A.

Generally you have to pay 20 riyal cover charge per visit to get in to go and use the bar.

If I'm not mistaken, annual memberships are roughly 800 riyals for individuals and 1200 riyals for families.

Beers are 18 riyals per pint, and bottles are 12 riyals... which is about as cheap as you're likely to find it in Doha outside of the liquor store.

i think u hv to pay some money to go in and use the bar (cant remember exactly how much is it, but it is not exspensive). And if u want to join as a member is not much for the fee ... Mind you the place is very old. :-)

Take Salwa Road SW toward industrial area.

Keep going on Salwa.

Go straight through the roundabout with a truck dealership "TATA".

Approx 500m after TATA, turn right. There is "Johnson Window Film" there.

Take first left (immediately after Patisserie Swisse).

Follow signs to main entrance.
