General Aviation

We are moving to Doha this summer and I have to leave my toy behind. Does anyone know of any general aviation opportunities in the area? I know that there is a flying club in Dubai but cannot find anything in Qatar.

Thanks for the responses. I have the contact information for the flying club in Dubai, Um AL Quwain Aeroclub, so I hope I can work out a membership with them at least. I have flown in numerious countries around the world so if I have to I can always spend some long weekends in Europe over the next three years we will be in Qatar.

Ransom there is private flying here but I don't know how much. I was interested in doing my PPL last year so spoke to the aeronautical college. They do run courses for private people but during the summer when temps exceed 45C it is too hot for the small planes to fly I was told.

Where you are allowed to fly once you have your licence is a differnt matter. I had ideas of microlighting across the desert and camping out miles from anywhere.

No private flying here. I'm 99% sure of that. Even Qatar Airways flights waste huge amounts of fuel skirting the coast and avoiding any direct routes that would take them over the US base. Qataris who want to learn to fly but who can't get into a military or QA program take themselves off to the States. (Even yet!)

If you want to double-check, try Doha International Airport and Qatar Aronautical College, both easily Googable, and make further enquiries.
