Rule #1: Keep a habbit of pressing CTRL+S when working in MS Excel.
Rule #2: Change your settings of Anti-Virus. Keep MS Excel in Safe exception list.
Rule #3: Always wait for your file to recover, once it is recovered save it in a new file in xlsx format.
Rule #4: Make sure that all macros are disabled while working on MS Excel.
CTRL + S will always save you.

@thelo: Yeah I used to do this I plugged out my Internet cable sometimes :P but its not applicable if you are working on server..

i guess your Microsoft office software is not genuine its pirated :)
it recovers my file but another thing is you need to rename it again because your file name will be like "xyz auto saved"..
This happens mostly when MS office is a illegal copy.
all the time .... and yeah especially when urgent report has to be submitted.... i feel like

hmmm... it happens some times & specially when someone is looking for some urgent reports.. :(
u need to restart it again..if again the same it means ur ms office is crashed and need to re-install again
