Can anyone who have experienced the Nissan Murano off road in the desert give me some insight of how the car handles the curves of the sand ? How does it drive in the wild ? Can I risk to take it to the high dunes, or is it not worth it ?
I honestly think the driver is a huge factor in off-road abilities of any vehicle. Not to toot my own horn, but I managed to get my 2.5L BMW X3 in regular street trim out to the inland sea amid a pack of Land Cruisers and other robust 4WDs. Most of the others in the convoy were absolutely amazed it made it out there.
Honestly, the best way to find out is to buy a tow cable and make sure you have someone escorting you around. Worst case, you get stuck and someone pulls out you.
I've driven the crossover in desert rocky terrain, beach with sticks and sand and even mud.
Good handling. You just need to know how to manure it. All vehicles including Landcruisers, Hummers and even the big GMC's and Chevs have had problems off roading. It all depends I guess ...
Well, you can always find a friend with a Land Cruiser or Patrol and just leave your pretty car on the road ;)
Yep, it's hard to hear things you don't wanna hear but sometimes truth hurts... Still look on the bright side- you'll have pretty cool car to go around. It'll definetly be noticed :)
What is the Murano for then if it can't go off road? Has it got jacked up suspension just in case it gets bumped up the kerb by accident on the school run? A bit of a pointless motor if you ask me....
The Murano is a lovely looking vehicle but stick to the roads. It has no pedigree for off roading and is not marketed as such. If you take it out into the desert you are asking for trouble I'm afraid.
You know that expression that you always want to hear what you'd like to hear.
Well I was expecting a favorable answer, but badly you pulled some real facts about the lovely Murano, sure it doesn't compare to a Patrol or a Landcruiser, but still it's a freaking crossover 4WD. I'd love to hear about people who actually took it to the middle of nowhere in the desert and just did fine.
"Predictably, the Murano can't follow its more robust Nissan stable mates, the Pathfinder and Patrol, off road. Most of the time its power is channelled through the front wheels, but it sends traction to the rear automatically when needed and there is a switch to engage permanent four-wheel-drive. Out in the countryside, though, even the feeble Freelander would leave the Murano churning like a demented dairy maid in its tyre tracks."

Land Rover Defender: King of any offroad terrain...
Nissan Patrol - King of Desert followed by Landcruiser
What do you think is the best set of wheels for off-roading?
This depends on your experience..
However, trick number 1 is to reduce some air from all tyres but not completely, this will reduce chances of wheels being stuck!
Enjoy the drive.
Murano and offroading..you must be kidding ..!

Yeah I guess you're right it's still like a 4WD but to drive ON roads only, but I still want to try it in the sand one of those days though...

Still a very nice car with a forward-looking design. Just don't get in a jam that the warranty won't cover.
I love my car. Love yours.
