Teachers at the Doha nursery where 19 people were killed say they have been told to keep quiet about what happened when the fire broke out.

The nursery workers from the Villagio mall are struggling to understand why people were being evacuated from the rest of the mall before the nursery was even told there was a fire.

They revealed their frustration at a public meeting to discuss concerns about a lack of official information about the tragedy.

“They didn't help us,” says one worker. “Why didn't they say to us? Why didn't they say to our owner Iman? Why, why?”

They say their questions have gone unanswered.
“We haven't any freedom to speak. They told us not to speak. They told us not to talk about it,” they say.
“Phone calls or media we cannot say anything. Maybe they have so many things, so many secrets to discuss but we cannot due to lack of freedom.”

Sarrinah Undey was meant to drop her son off that morning but says she had a call from one of the other teachers, Marabelle Orosso, who later died in the fire.

“She's crying and she tell me we need help. I told her don't panic,” she says.
“Then I can hear the children, they are shouting. Then it’s the end. Then there's no more. I heard a bang like that.”

Around 100 Doha residents gathered to share their concerns, including a lack of information about the tragedy on state-controlled media.

Many also fear the wider safety issues will be swept under the carpet.
