Hafiz Ibn Taymiyyah writes:

It has been proved that Ubay bin Ka‘b used to offer twenty rak‘ahs with the people in the Qiyam of Ramadan. Adding to them, three more. Many of the scholars have said that this is the sunnah, as the emigrants and the Madinan helpers used to stand with him, and they did not object to it.

(Majmu‘ al-Fatawa by Hafiz Ibn Taymiyyah, under Naza‘ al-Ulama’ fi miqdar qiyam Ramadan)

Hafiz Ibn Taymiyyah (RA) writes in his Fatawa: ‘Verily it has been proven that Umar made Ubay ibn Ka’ab (RA) lead the people in 20 Rakats of Taraweeh and 3 Witr in Ramadhan. This is the way of the scholars of this Ummah and this is the Sunnah. This is due to the fact that Sayyidina Ubay ibn Ka’ab (RA) read 20 Rakats Taraweeh in a large congregation of the Muhajireen and Ansar of the Sahabah and none amongst them objected to this practice.’ (Fatawa Ibn Taymiyyah vol 1, p191/ Al Mughni vol 1, p803)

In the time of Hafiz Ibn Taymiyyah (RA) when the Rawafid (Shia) put the blame upon Sayyidina Umar (RA) for creating the innovated practice of 20 Rakats Taraweeh. Ibn Taymiyyah (RA) responded to this allegation by writing in defence of Sayyidina Umar (RA) to the Rawafid: ‘If Sayyidina Umar Farooq (RA) by establishing 20 Rakats of Taraweeh had been deemed to adopt a bad practise, then Sayyidina Ali (RA) would have put an end to this in his Khilafat. However, in the Khilafat of Sayyidina Ali (RA) , he too would read 20 Rakats Taraweeh prayer in Kufa. In the month of Ramadhan, Sayyidina Ali (RA) would state: ‘May Allah enlighten the grave of Sayyidina Umar (RA) , just as He (Umar ) has enlightened our Masajids for us.’ (Due to the fact of establishing the 20 Rakats Taraweeh for the Ummah). (Minhaaj ul Sunnah vol 2, p224)

my dear brother insanity, can you reply despite your so many quotes on 8 rakats, why there are so many places including the big mosques (Haram Sharif) follows taraweh prayers with 20 rakats.

There are small differences in the way we all pray and follow certain Islamic practises, as described by 4 Ayemmas (Hanafi, Shaafi, Maaliki and Hambali). We shall follow one of them and should not try to correct them (others). These are NOT controversies but harmonies path towards peaceful life.

We are not Learned scholars of Islam. We are among those muslims who followed what we have listened and read during our life.

Pray to Allah to guide and lead us to the Right and straight path....Ameen

"...The debate on such controversial point will not lead us to any conclusion. ..."

There is not a single topic in islam which has not become controversial in todays times due to the many groups and parties muslims have divided themselves in.

To end the controversy we need to return back to the Quran & sunnah which is very clear even on this subject.

2) "...Secondly tha hadeeth of Ayisha quoted above has nothing to do with taraweeh..."

hadeeth of Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan, who asked ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), “How did the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) pray during Ramadaan?” She said: “He did not pray more than eleven rak’ahs in Ramadaan or at other times. He would pray four, and do not ask how beautiful and long they were, then he would pray four, and do not ask how beautiful and long they were, then he would pray three. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, will you sleep before you pray Witr?’ He said, ‘O ‘Aa’ishah, my eyes sleep but my heart does not.’”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1909; Muslim, 738

=========

Taraweeh and tahajjud are one prayer - for this also i have provided the reference in previous posts.

Also the same is proven from following narration:

jaabir Ibn 'Abdullah agreed with 'Aa'ishah, he said: " When the Prophet prayed with the people one night during Ramadaan he prayed eight raka'at and then made Witr." [Ibn Hibbaan].

So it is beyond any shade of doubt that 8 rakats is what is proven from sunnah.

1. "..by following hazrat umar, we are following very prophet mohamed .."

I have already quoted what hazrat umar radhiallahu anhu had commanded:

Umar (ra) commanded the people to Pray Eleven Raka’at as was the practice of the Messenger (SAWS): As-saib Bin Yazid (ra) said :

“ Umar Bin al-Khattaab (ra) Commanded Ubayy Bin Ka’b (ra) and Tamim ad-daari (ra) to Lead the People in Qiyam with “Eleven Raka’ah”. The reciter would read one Hundred Ayah (in each raka’ah), Until we had to Lean on Canes Because of Long Standing. We would Finish Except with the Arrival of Fajr [Recorded by Malik in al-Muwatta from Muhammad Bin Yusuf from as-Saib Bin Yazid. This Isnad is very Authentic because Muhammad Bin Yusuf is considered trustworthy by the scholars; and the two Shaykhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) have accepted his narrations.

Either 8 or 20, follows what is been followed in the mosque in your area, where you generally pray.

The claim will not be on You, IMAM (Amir/leader) takes the responsibility on your behalf.

The debate on such controversial point will not lead us to any conclusion. Believe me this is one of the oldest point of discussion people had. We would finally enter into the claim of which are Right and which are wrong hadiths (mazallah), we are not learned scholars of Islam. We are among those muslims who followed what we had listened and read during our life.

Pray to Allah to guide and lead us to Right and straight path....Ameen

khaderbhai, actually iam not rejecting prophet mohamed (S) , instead iam followong his very words as reported saying by him, my followers are like stars, whomever emong them you follow, you are in the right path' so by following hazrat umar, we are following very prophet mohamed (s) . Secondly tha hadeeth of Ayisha quoted above has nothing to do with taraweeh, as it indicates about witr, which is conducted in every months, not about taraweeh, and no any scholar said it is about taraweeh. Every body knows taraweeh is the special prayer performed only in ramadan. so how can this hadees be quoted as a proof for taraweeh as 8 rakaa..?

Brothers, As-salamo Alaikum,

Ramadhan Mubarak to everyone! I personally know a very good Sunni hanafi hafiz who recites Quran with excellent Qirat (MashAllah) and clear diction. He maybe available for travel to Qatar during the second half of Ramadhan for recitation of Holy Quran during tarawih absolutely free of cost.

He does NOT accept any money at all as this is purely for 'thawaab'. However, as a normal courtesy, it is expected that someone should sponsor his visa, air fare, food and a modest accommodation in Qatar during this period (about a week or so).

MashAllah, he is an excellent hafiz as well as Haji and has lived in Egypt & Sudan. His knowledge of hadith is very good. He speaks fluent Arabic and English. He has done Masters degree in Arabic language and is currently pursuing PhD in India.

If you know any mosque or place where brothers want to arrange salat-al-tarawih during Ramadhan and are looking for a good Hafiz may please contact me immediately through this post (or email sra904/-a-t-/gmail.com) and I will pass on the message to him. May Allah guide us all and help us in becoming good Muslim. Allah Hafiz and JazakAllah!

P.S: if required, I can upload an audio of his qirat also and send you the link.

"...The believers have the right to choose either 8 or 20..."

By less effort (praying 8 instead of 20) you are adhering to sunnah proven from prophet muhammad saws and also from the sahabas radhiallahu anhu. Why pray more and deviate from what is proven and established ??

Bro read my posts carefully - all the points which you have referred to in the links which you posted are answered already.

I have quoted hadith and references which proves:

1) Tarawih tahajjud are one prayer

2) Prophet muhammad saws prayed 8 rakts tarawih during ramadhan and non-ramazan as reported by hazrat aisha radhiallahu anhuma

3) Umar Ra ordered tarawih of 8 rakats

4) If we agree to sahih hadith that prophet did not pray more than 11 rakats whether in ramadhan or non-ramadhan and if for the sake of argument we believe tarawih and tahajjud is different then it means that tarawih + tahajjud = 11 rakats ...how does it prove that tarawih is 20 rakats ??

5) jaabir Ibn 'Abdullah agreed with 'Aa'ishah, he said: " When the Prophet prayed with the people one night during Ramadaan he prayed eight raka'at and then made Witr." [Ibn Hibbaan].

So the point is very clear - if you want to adhere to sunnah of the prophet SAWS then pray 8...

In reality Taraweeh, Tahajjud and Qiyaam of Ramadhaan, are all one and the same thing. The long hadeeth of Abu Dharr (radi-Allaahu ’anhu) in Ibn Maajah is clear evidence of this statement. The summary of the hadeeth is that Abu Dharr (radi-Allaahu ’anhu) said,

“We kept the fasts of Ramadhaan with the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam), then he led us in Qiyaam (Taraweeh prayer) on the 23rd night (when seven nights were left) till about one third of it passed. He did not observe it on the 24th, then on the 25th night he led us till about half the night passed. We requested to offer supererogatory prayer during the whole night. The Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said, “He who observes Qiyaam along with the Imaam till he finishes it, then it is as if he offered prayer the whole night.” Then he did not observe the Qiyaam with us on the 26th night, then finally on the 27th night he gathered his wives, members of his household and the people and he led everyone in the Qiyaam (Taraweeh prayer) till we feared of missing the dawn meal.” [Ibn Maajah (no. 1327) (2/287) (Arabic/English)][1]

It is clear from this narration that the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) led the taraweeh prayer in three parts of the night and by praying it after Eesha until the end of the night he informed us of its time. It is likely that no time would have remained for tahajjud, (as taraweeh on the 27th night was prayed so late in the night to the extent that there were fears of missing the dawn meal) therefore no doubt remains about taraweeh and tahajjud being one prayer.

When Umar (ra) enlivened this practice of having the Taraa'weeh prayer done in congregation under Ubay Ibn Ka'b (ra), he had him pray Eleven raka'at.

This Isnad is very Authentic because Muhammad Bin Yusuf is considered trustworthy by the scholars; and the two Shaykhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) have accepted his narrations.

As-Saib Bin Yazid is a sahabi who performed Hajj in his youth with the Prophet . This is also recorded by: (A) Ibn Abi Shaybah (in Al-Musannaf) from Yahya Bin Said al-Qattan. (B) An-Naysaburi from Ismail Bin Umayyah, Usamah Bin Zayd, and Muhammad Bin Ishaq. (C) Ibn Khyzaymah from Ismail Bin Ja’far al-Madani, All of those reported it from Muhammad Bin Yusuf as above.]

The Number of Raka'at for the Taraweeh Salaat

There is difference among the scholars about the number of raka'at to be established for the Night Prayer of Ramadaan. However, the correct amount is established by what the Messenger did i.e. Eight raka'at and Three raka'at for the Witr prayer.

All the various names such as Tahajjud, Taraaweeh, Qiyaamul-Lail refer to the eight raka'ahs and three witr which the Messenger (S) used to prayer whether in Ramadaan or not as Aa'ishah has explained.

Jaabir Ibn 'Abdullah agreed with 'Aa'ishah, he said: " When the Prophet prayed with the people one night during Ramadaan he prayed eight raka'at and then made Witr." [Ibn Hibbaan].

Additional evidence for not exceeding eleven rak’aat

1. Jaabir Ibn 'Abdullah agreed with 'Aa'ishah , he said: " When the Prophet prayed with the people one night during Ramadaan he prayed eight raka'at and then made Witr." [Ibn Hibbaan].

2. Umar commanded the people to Pray Eleven Raka’at as was the practice of the Messenger : As-saib Bin Yazid said :“ Umar Bin al-Khattaab Commanded Ubayy Bin Ka’b and Tamim ad-daari to Lead the People in Qiyam with “Eleven Raka’ah”

(1) Reported by Al Bukharee, Muslim and others, and it has been referenced in Salaat-ut-Taraaweeh (20-21) and Saheeh Abee Dawood (1212).

(2)I say: This includes the two sunnah rak’aat performed after ‘Ishaa or the two short rak’aat the Prophet used to begin his Night Prayer with. This is based on Al Haafidh Ibn Hajr’s opinion. See Salaat-ut-Taraaweeh

With regard to the evidence quoted by those who say that it is not permissible to do more than eight rak’ahs in Taraaweeh, they quote the hadeeth of Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan, who asked ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), “How did the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) pray during Ramadaan?” She said: “He did not pray more than eleven rak’ahs in Ramadaan or at other times. He would pray four, and do not ask how beautiful and long they were, then he would pray four, and do not ask how beautiful and long they were, then he would pray three. is it so khaderbhai? We are not ordered to follow our Imam itself. But we are asked to follow the Quran and sunnah and the teachings of sahaba e kiram, the people who learned Islam from its very source. I have read in many books that Haz.Umar (r) performed taraweeh in 20 rakaaths. So i think its is the right way. Umar (r) w'll not do anything against the teachings of prophet. I dont think most of our mutawas are performing prayers in right way, as i know many mutawas , even they are learned , they are not aware of how the prayer is performed.
