School locks up students for not paying fees

chaudary
By chaudary

DOHA: In a shocking incident several students of a private school were allegedly “detained” for about six hours in a room in the school building without food or drinks for defaulting payment of school fees.

The students were forced to stay inside the room throughout the school hours – from 7am to 1pm.

The school authorities didn’t allow them even to go to the toilet, according to a report carried by Al Sharq yesterday.

The school also reportedly put a watchman to ensure that the students do not sneak out of the room.

“I came to know about the incident when my daughter came back from the school weeping. When I asked the reason she explained what she and some other students had experienced in the school on that day,” the paper quoted a mother as saying.

According to the parent’s version, a watchman came and called her daughter just before the classes started.

When asked where she was being taken to, the watchman said, “ to the zoo.”

Then he led the girl to a large room where several boys and girls from different grades had been put up.

“They were not given food or drinks and were not allowed to go out even during the break. An eight-year-old girl passed urine inside the room, having been denied permission to go to the toilet,” the parent was quoted as saying.

She said this girl was in a psychological shock after the incident and was not willing to go to school.

The next day morning the said parent went to the school to enquire about the incident but was not allowed in. There were about six other parents who came for the same purpose.

“We were told to wait outside until the school is closed at 1pm. After half an hour, a public relations official came and told us that the students were punished for not paying the school fees. He also told us that they will not be allowed in the school again until they pay the arrears,” said the parent.

When the parents insisted to meet the school officials, they were told that the decision to punish the students was taken by the school director and he was not available at that time.

After too much persistence the parents were allowed to meet the deputy director, a woman, who said she was helpless since the decision was taken directly by the director.

“Finally we got the director over telephone who promised to come and meet us in half an hour. But he didn’t come though we waited for long. Even more surprisingly, he justified the action of the school and said it will be repeated if we are not paying the fees,” the parent was quoted as saying.

“Such behaviour is not suited to any educational institution. We are calling on the authorities to take appropriate action,” said the parent.

Why not mention the name of the school? I personally think this story is B.S. as it's a known procedure those that don't pay don't get their credits or records realized and can't pass the class. So I seriously doubt they were locked up and not able to use the bathroom, so what you had a bunch of kids in a class room going in their pants, please!!

there shoulod be some kind of rule as far as posting outrageous stories such as " PROVIDING AN ACCURATE SOURCE" because no offense but some readers on here are so damn gullible and easily brainwashed it's pathetic and sad.

I don't think any parent purposefully will not pay the school fee for their beloved children, it is because of they are working with bad companies and not paying on time. First govt should take necessary action for non-paying companies. Degrading...simply degrading action, no matter what.

What would the director of that SH*T Hole school do if her daughter was prevented to use the toilets and had to pee in front of other boys and girls? There are NO excuses, whatsover, for the way the children were treated.

Let's hope this matter has come to the attention of the SEC. And let's hope they do something about this.

I see someone mentioning DUTY OF CARE here. Dream on my friend if you believe this is something people here are familiar with. Nonetheless, I still believe we all owe a duty of care to each other.

Teachers are bound by their ethics, if not by their moral duties, to protect the children under their care during school time. Clearly the ones at that school have failed big time.

Well, its the parent's mistake not paying the fees; how can anyone possibly justify the school athorities punishing kids for that? The school has every right to communicate to the parent to NOT send their kids if the fees are not paid within a certain date. But detention and mental torture of kids cant be justified on any grounds whatsoever, IMHO.

The kind of dent it can make in the mind of a kid in such a vulnerable age should not be underestimated.

There must be, and for that I would aggree for corrective measures, but just because their school fees were delayed doesn't give the school the right to detain the kids (not an iota). Reaction here is bloated you say? How and what would you do if it were done to your kids? There was already an initial infraction by the school, but what did the authorities did? Here lies the underlying problem in this place, if they have connections they can't be punished. The reason why most things don't get fixed here is because of a system: wasta, and everything gets swept under the rug.

I am not in favor of closing school down As it will effect other students. But they should compensate parent & student which suffer

& The guy who give such order Should go though toughest punishment ... they should give him to each parent for a day. and then put him in jail

By anonymous• 18 Jan 2012 10:22
anonymous

The whole reaction to this incident looks blown out of proportion, IMHO. It is a common practice to detain students during break as a form of corrective measure. The students are asked to sit in the class- in Detention, without joining their friends in the playground, so that they learn that their action was wrong and not to repeat it.

Now the school seems to have taken the same measure when the fee was not paid, however if not letting the kids go to the toilet or have food is true, was a bit too harsh. They ideally should have just been detained from attending the lessons, IMHO....

The action of the school is inappropriate. But it is also inappropriate to ask for a service (education) and not pay the fees. The fees are used to pay the teachers' salaries. Now they don't get their salaries, and so on, and so on. There is a certain attitude among the population here not to pay on-time! It's a cultural issue and you can find it in every business in Qatar. Even the government does not pay on time!!
