Singles in Qatar?

JDMMAN
By JDMMAN

I'm considering a job opportunity in Doha. Luckily I'm highly mobile since its only myself.

So my question is, as a single expatriate professional, what's the single's scene like in Doha?

By JDMMAN• 7 Aug 2021 15:52
JDMMAN

Alas, I’m finally in Doha! It took 11 years and working in other places (Iraq and UAE), but finally here! Still single lol I wonder how things have changed (tolerance wise) for the single’s scene?

From the sound of olives profile, it seems she has'nt met any decent guys either on QL or in the city itself. I don't blame the poor lass...this town is pretty hypocritical! as for the single scene, its best you find out for yourself JdMMAN

Let me tell you about single life in here.

Usually, being a single guy in the late 20s early 30s is something men wish to have when that period of their life has passed. Some admit it, others don't but reality is that as a man, you peak physically during that time and your mental ability should be at a good stage as well.

In Qatar, you just get fat at this stage of your life. You literally invest to date more than you do to get married, which is very very stupid. Women in here, and by women I mean club girls are disgusting. They look like crap but act as if they are top models. You sit and talk with any of them and you realise that your young nephew has better verbal/mental skills and abilities. But what to do? that is all what is available. So, you try to blend in because at the end of the day you don't want your right hand to get more muscular than your left hand.

Fiend ship with men is kinda weird. You've got the smoker community of friends, the over eaters, the rich ones who are 31 but live with their parents, and others that might be like you if you are any different than those I mentioned. Again, you will have to blend in.

Best is if you try to save up, and take vacations every 4 weeks so that you can have some fun anywhere worth it, where you can be single and go for a swim or even a bar without getting told, it is for couples only.

Well then JDMMAN you should be ok. It's not going to be easy to find girls, but once you make friends and get out there you should find a few.

And yes, Maersk is really good. There accommodation is REALLY nice.

Here in Qatar life is different than you may have emagined. There are rare social activities.Man and woman can work, live, walk on road normally, nobody will come and ask you if you behave decently.Even if you share apartment no body complain in normal circumtances. Here the standard of living is bit orthodox but there are lot of malls and cinemas and sport complexes if you interested. And even you are single you have lot of time for study, mediation or any other activity you like.

Mearsk oil is one of the best employers in Qatar. There are lots of western expats who came to Qatar as single and leave as double..its easy to get gfs if you are looking in the right places:)

Have to agree with deepb, you're probably better off in Cairo if you're looking for a single scene.

Well if money wise, the company in Cairo is competitive with the offer here, and you are looking for a single scene, that would be a better idea.

Olive - potentially Maersk Oil Qatar. Weighing this opportunity against offers from Apache in Cairo, Egypt and several other local offers. Unfortunately Shell wouldn't send me out as an expat to Lybia so looking at options.

Rules are vague, yes that is the worst part. At least Saudi just declares their rules and sticks to it. Even if we don't agree with their rules, they are not being hypocritical about it.

Here, they don't want to lose their cultural values like Dubai, but they don't want the reputation that Saudi has either. They are trying for the best of both worlds here, so they don't publicize their rules and people are in for a rude shock when the rule gets suddenly sprung on them.

By Olive• 30 Mar 2010 09:51
Olive

Hmmm, if that's the case deepb then I've heard the opposite. But as per usual in Qatar the rules are vague. Ya, Bleu or genesis should be able to shed some light on the subject.

Sharia does not forbid men and women from working together.

However, men and women should not sit together for idle chitchat or flirting. Islamic shariah obliges men to lower their gaze and not to stare at women. It forbids men and women who are non related to be alone together.

The part about the men and women who are non-related to being alone together has been legally enforced in a few situations here. It's all hush hush, when it's enforced and usually not on westerners. But, the law is the law.

Of course, this is just information gathered from my 25 years over here. I can't claim to be 100% sure about these. Probably, bleu or genesis or some others could clarify these for us.

From what I understand they follow a Shariah based law, hence why men and women can work together in the same office.

As far as I'm aware Qatar has separate civil law jurisdiction but for all family, inheritance and criminal acts they follow Sharia Law. Not an altered version, the one and only original Sharia.

Raffles are illegal if you have to pay for the tickets directly by the way.

Enforcement in most cases are hypocritical in nature. But if someone decides to accuse you under Sharia Law - your pretty much in trouble.

It's a Shariah BASED law, but not pure Shariah law. Hence why banks here can declare interest and raffles are also allowed under certain circumstances, not to mention alcohol.
