Below is the french link to the report of the UN on prisons aroud the world !!!

It is incredible to believe that until today torture and physical and physcological punishement is a comon practice around the world !!

i pasted this sentence since it is relevent to the arab world:

"Manfred Nowak a déclaré que la torture était une pratique courante dans le monde arabe et il a regretté que de nombreux pays arabes, contrairement à la Jordanie, lui aient refusé l'accès à leurs prisons"

translation:
"Manfred Nowak said that torture was a comon practice in the arab world, and he regrets that alot of arab countries, excluding jordan, refused to give him access to their prisonsS"

God help whoever is in any prison !

dont want to turn any prison into a hotel ! but every human has a right for dignity and respect ! even if they harmed society in any way ! and in most countries around the world (including arabic ones), any one daring to oppose a regime or to request faire and equal rights is tortured and thrown to prison for ever !

this is what we should be banning !

of course i support prison for life for any Rappist, murder .... and all those ! but lets have a real look on the system ! is the system treating everyone fairly ?

I knew many prison officers who were good guys, worked in a hospital next door to a prison not as a customer!

However there are so many people waiting for the dark side to be legitimised that we should revert to the ancient Athenian system of appointing people by lot (lottery) to such positions, so many people are attracted to such jobs by their own peculiar messed up life that we should view people who choose such jobs with power over others with great suspicion as is happening in the UK now. Every war unleashes these people with a legitimate case to prove that their side is right and that they can do anything they feel is necessary to the obviously barbarian people on the other side. Mahathma Ghandhi had it right, violence begets ther violence and the winner may appear usually to be the one with the biggest stick. Not in the long term however, history judges more impartially than that. Guantanamo was bad, you may get upset about reports of cruelty, but remember tht this is being judged by a yardstick developed over centuries in Europe and America of the rights of prisoners. These standards have not reached other parts of the world yet. When I saw Rumsfeld questioned by a BBC reporter after his triumphal arrival in Iraq after the Invasion I remember his comment that he was more concerned with US soldiers lives than Iraqis. This will come back to haunt him eventually, The wheel turns and everyone gets their turn on top. He has gone down very fast, as well as Bush and Cheney, War Crimes trials anyone?

So , do we need to turn prisons into five star hotels ?

Certain prisons, both old and new, are notorious for violence and some easily out perform others in the horror stories stakes. The 10 worst prisons in the world are briefed below.

1. ADX, Colorado – This is the ultimate prison, literally. Since it opened in 1994, ADX is nothing but slow and inhumane torture. Although those there are the worst of the worst, human rights protestors from all over the world have targeted it. Inmates are only allowed out of their cells for 9 hours a week and barely interact with anyone. There is hardly any sunlight and you have to do everything in your cell. If ever there was a way to destroy any semblance of hope an individual had then ADX is it!

2. Tadmor Military Prison, Syria – This is one of the most brutal prisons ever. Torture, executions and untold brutality goes on within these walls. The medieval methods of torture have been well documented. Innocent and guilty alike have been dragged via a rope until they are dead, beaten to death with pipes and chopped into pieces with an axe.

3.Carandiru Penitentiary, Brazil – Prison massacres, HIV, legalised torture… Whatever you can imagine from a prison, they have it here. A fifth of all 7,500 inmates have HIV and the vast majority of them didn’t have it when they first walked through the gates. On top of that, if they have to have surgery then forget the anaesthetics. Apparently, anaesthetic is a luxury soothe patients are operated on without anything to numb the pain at. Instead, they are left to scream. Every now and then there is a massacre or riots as well but at least that would be relatively painless in relation.

4. La Sante Prison, France – La Sante is well known for its suicide figures, with 124 suicides occurring in 1999 alone. Prisoners have actually eaten rat poison to escape the depravity here. Some prisoners become slaves, others only leave their cells for 4 hours a day and the violence is horrendous. The punishment block has no running water and many are left down there for days because of minor misdemeanours. The treatment just isn’t humane by any stretch of the imagination.

5. La Sabeneta Prison, Venezuela – With 1 guard to 150 inmates here its no wonder that this is one of the worst prisons on Earth right now. Corruption and bribery run riot here, and that’s just the staff! The prisoners are worse with 624 inmates being hurt and 196 being murdered within the walls in 1995 alone. Yes, all of that happened in just one year! The previous year though 108 died in a day when the inmates had a gun battle… between themselves.

6.Rikers, New York – 5 years ago, this prison would have been at number 1 on the list but recent reforms have forced a dramatic improvement so it is a little tamer than it used to be. For example, the 70 stabbings that take place there every year now used to be around 1,000 a decade ago. The violence is legendary and guards reported that they lived in fear of their lives. Although this is not the case anymore, it's a ghost that will haunt the prison forever.

7. Diyarbakir Prison, Turkey – This is a lovely prison to be in. With children imprisoned for life and guards masterminding attacks against the prisons, it’s definitely less than a safe place to be. Prisoners are classed largely as political so they have no rights whatsoever. This may sound a little like the Dark Ages, and it really is. The guards do as they please, as an attack against 33 prisoners in 1996 proves. 10 died and 23 were injured, all at the hands of the authority.

8. San Quentin State Prison, California – As one of the world’s best known prisons, San Quentin is synonymous with violence, executions and the worst of the worst criminals in California to date. It has over 1500 employees and they still can’t control the inmates. The riots in February 2006 proved a good example of that. Racial attacks led to 100 prisoners being badly injured and 2 killed. That’s not the only incident but it’s a great example of just what goes down behind the walls.

9. Mendoza Prison, Argentina – It isn’t the violence here that you have to worry about but the conditions that you would have to survive if you were sent there. The prison should cater for 600 prisoners but there are over 1000 more there than should be so the overcrowding is horrendous. That is not to say that you would not be exposed to torture because you most likely would at some point.

10. Nairobi Prison, Kenya – Some prisons make their way onto the list of worst prisons not because of violence but because of the conditions that they house prisoners in year in and year out. Inmates here tend to be naked and infected with horrible diseases that kill them slowly. Overcrowding means that they don’t get the medical help they need and most die in agony.

"contrairement à la Jordanie"

I reject the whole report because of this phrase!!

And the people in Guantanamo are not prisoners.. they're 'detainees' :D .. and they're not on American soil so please don't give US a bad name !!

I think he's being rather naive if he thinks that all countries will give him access.

No I haven't opened the link, forgive me, but I don't tend to start the day on a gloomy note. I avoid reading or watching goring scenes or literature as much as I possibly can at anytime, besides I'm not on an empty stomach now..:)

Of course it's horrible that torture is still practiced today, but again, what's happening in Guantanamo is NOT the worst torture ever. There has been way worse. And it's not just happening in Guantanamo, it's happening in Iran, Iraq, KSA, Egypt, Sudan, even here.

Olive... if you make an age analysis... it will sound logical.

during the 1940's the world had come out of ignorance to get into the suit of arrogance. this is the main factor why the war had actually taken place...

and now more than half a century later, almost the whole world is occupied by people like you and me with a broader outlook of everything around, for example multi culturalism, inter racial relationships, etc etc.

now comparing the mind set of the world in the two different times, in my opinion... the guantanamo bay thing is way brutal. i mean even at this age if such tortures is practiced then ... i find it the worst and mroe horrible.

ExLegend, Happy Happy said the tactics used in Guantanamo are "The worst tactics ever" I was simply highlighting that they are not.

Olive... did u lose your thinking cap? WW2 is history, its the time when Nazis were around if your remember well.

now we have already gone past the fear of millennium and the heroes of the past have turned into the bad guys. and their cell is the guantanamo bay where they trap 'rats' in their eye for unleashing the devil within.

sound sane and say amen.

Yeahhhhh, while that's not very nice, I would not call it the worst torture tactics ever by far. Look up what the Japanese did in the POW camps during WWII. Makes that stuff look like a walk in the park.

it has been proven that prisoners at Guantanamo were tortured ! and until today, the US refuses to include this prison under the US law ! they consider guantanamo to be oven any law since it is supposed to detail anyone potentialy to become a theat to the nation !

any excuse is good enough to be thrown in there !

and their excuse to torture you is that u were involeved, someway or another, in a plot against the US ! for example saying that the 9/11 attacks were US government planned will get you a free ticked for life in there !! and then they dare to talk about freedom and rights !!!! what a joke !!

"worst torture tactics ever." Care to say what those are Happy Happy? From what I know, no one in Guantanamo was tied to a wrack, had their finger nails pulled out one by one or had the skin ripped from their bodies. Which I would consider to be pretty bad torture.

Heard of infamous Guantanamo? It's not in the "Arab World", where captives were humiliated with the worst torture tactics ever.
