if your are lucky to be on old bootrom, then you have a chance to downgrade your baseband itself from 05.14.02 to 05.13 or 05.12.01 using fuzzyband tool in cydia. if you have upgraded to newer baseband 05.14.02 and in new bootrom above 5.08, then you are out of luck at the moment. wait for the unlock to be released. also sorces say, the unlock wont be released untill the release of iOS4.2. so might be a bit of wait.
yeah ..i have used limera to jailbreak. even though it says it supports only 4.1, i have used on 4.0.2 and it worked then it was easy for me to unlock as my baseband remains same.
itune reminded me many times to upgrade but i didnt (thank god)
cant u roll it back ? i mean you cant restore ur back up and go back?
what i have done was, i didnt upgrade to 4.1. i just broke my 4.0.2 by using 4.1jailbreak tool and unlocked by using the same.. the only thing you should know that u shud not upgrade to 4.1 as the baseband goes up by using the upgrade.
i am done with it. i have unlocked my phone today and it works perfect with same software version(4.0.2 with same baseband). i am using my Vodafone Sim in it now :) .. got it done after 2 weeks of waiting but it was worth waiting as its a lovely device :D
they have delayed the realease yet again. seems to be true. let wait for the glory day before Apple makes their 4.2 beta (which is released already), officially released on itunes as 4.2.
Yeah i know ...i have been searching the net for last few days and got the same answer :( ..still have to wait. but there is a good news today that GreenPois0n releasing the jailbreak within few days.
UK iPhone 4 are factory unlocked,, so you dont need to software unlock them neither activate. factory unlocked essentialy mean "Sim Free" so u can just pop any sim to get it working straight away with any firware version.
But this isnt the case if its locked to the service provider as you yourself have rightly mentioned.
i have got couple of iPhone 4 from UK, never had the problem. also one canadian version. its factory unlocked after all.
shyams: for the UK iphone, the phonebook sim will unlock not just activate. It is because the phones are factory unlocked BUT when bought they are tied to a certain carrier. I actually worked on one. The at&t sim wont just unlock them. You either need a sim from the carrier it is tied to or an open sim without a pin such as the phonebook sim. It is a unique problem only with the UK iphones.
I got an iphone 4 from France and an at&t sim unlocked it just fine but not the UK phone.
then check the firmware version. if its anything equal or lesser than 4.0.1, then you are lucky and get a grip of it never upgrade.. if its 4.0.2 or 4.1, you are out of luck for the moment.
I already have the Iphone 3gs. But didn't know if it was best to get it unlocked in the UK first or if it was possible to do it out here. Thanks for your replies.

to be frank i never tried that so i dont know about it. try googling it u might be able to see people having the same issue.
anyway since u upgraded and reach in new baseband, there is no harm in trying. even if doesnt work, u will end up in the same place ..
Good luck :)
Good point! Could restore to origonal factory conditions but doesnt that automatically install latest software at same time?

Nachu, where did you get the 4.1 jailbreak tool?
shyams

Congrats and jailbreak is out for 4.1, BUT for the unlock. so wait for the next upgrade.

just waiting to see if its true :)
if yours is a iPhone 4 that came with 4.0.2 preinstalled, then you are out of luck for the moment. need to wait.

i am having 4.0.2 and i stuck for the moment . hope there will be crack available soon.... now im using my phone as a iPOD :P lols
Thanks again. How do you find out what the firmware version is?
the phonebook wont unlock your phone.. its just to activate your iPhone not to unlock, any At&T sim will do the job of activating.
then check the firmware version. if its anything equal or lesser than 4.0.1, then you are lucky and get a grip of it never upgrade.. if its 4.0.2 or 4.1, you are out of luck for the moment.
Not the Iphone 4 is Iphone 3GS
to unlock it you just need an open sim card. You can get a phonebook sime (make sure to get the micro size) and it will unlock the phone.
if its iPhone 4. .dont worry, UK iPhone 4 are factory unlocked unlike their earlier 3gs and 3g.. so not to worry :-)
Thanks all. Tinkerbell I would of guessed that I-spot would tell you no as they would like you to buy a new product but I can give it a go.
U can dependending on the ver.
Pm me if u wanna get it done.
