Where do Americans go to socialize

redcajun504
By redcajun504

We are moving to Qatar in July and wanted to know since the Qatar community is very strict, how do westerner socialize so their costoms won't be offensive, is Christianity frowned upon, and is it a crime to wear a cross? Is there a Catholic church there? We want to be respectable of the country's customs and religion, please advise.

Well, what is all of this coming to? All in all: Nobody of us can say that he is a full-blooded American or a full-blooded Saudi or Tyrolean. Whatever your nationality is, this is all happening in your minds. You know this kind of discussion is why I say nobody of us is to judge over another fellow human being. Of course growing up in a certain area of the world leaves some kind of "fingerprint" on you.

Now I for my part am half-tyrolean (a very stubborn and proud people) and half-dutch (a very liberal and friendly bunch). Sure you have something against them too, have you qwerty? Americans are Americans, Brits are Brits, Aussies are Aussies and Qatari are Qatari. Each and every one of them with their unique characters and feats. And to compliment that there is the individual that brings his own share for the mix. I for my part have found the Americans, Brits and Aussies to be a very easygoing people and fun to have around. Sure they are loud, but that is simply they being themselves. They are a bit nuts though, but who of us is not? And I know plenty of those people. (Note: The thing about being nuts is meant tongue-in-cheek. Who else would be knowingly jumping from a ski-lift? Who else would fall during tobogganing and go back up the hill to do it again? Who else would kiss a stuffed out fox?)

You might not be able to live with his or hers opinions attitude and behaviour and now guess what? You don't have to! Just turn around and let him/her live his/her life! It's that easy, but some seem to have a hard time understanding this very simple principle of co-existence.

You'll be fine redcajun. When we first moved to Dubai (after squeky clean Singapore) just after 9/11 my family was a little concerned about safety. 5 yrs down the road we're still here and enjoying living here. I know Dubai is not Qatar but it's still in the middle east. Great place to bring up kids. safe. So enjoy the move.

Dear Qwerty,

Quote “There were also some locals who were curious, (don't want to mention too much here) but were politely shown the way out. What is wrong with them being curious? I thought Christians were meant to be tolerant!

Yes. I was there, you were not, When you have guys in dis-das walk in swaying and rubbing against females and trying to get into tight spots, isn't that bad?? Also, to have some people playing songs, outside the Parish grounds, when there are no houses around. isn't that funny.

Without disrespect, I presume that you are Filipino. - You are wrong. Keep you guessing.

Anyway, we are guest in a foreign country and as I say all the time - I do not mean to hurt any one, everyone to their own opinion, enjoy life, live and let live without effection anyone in a bad way.

Cheers

Well I guess we will just not speak, becsuse you can't make me angry and spitting out rude comments is only making me laugh and half the people that is reading the this. You are a person who God will love no matter what you say or do, he is just that way. So take care and where you are from is relevant because it is dictating you closed minded views of life. By Yall

Now you are trying to get me into a debate about my country's policies: That is not for me to talk on because all people regardless of where they are from are not the same. America does have its share of racism but that is not to say other countries does not have the same issues. My eyes are always focused on God not what man does because God is always in control.

You are right we are self centred, self opinionated and might even be racist, and black people have had it bad, but so have so many others in the world and as for as Israel, I have not even been to New York yet so I really can't speak on what is going on with Israel, I have enough on my plate wondering what's for dinner..Lighten up!

Well Helloqatar: American I believe being one are loud; but it is because we are so fun loving. Freedom of Expression has given us the rights to voice our own opinions and stuff like that. Does not mean it is right but keep good conversation going. The Brits are rude I think but are also nice, just direct.

By Qwerty• 16 May 2006 00:16
Qwerty

Helloqatar,

I agreed with your sentiments, there are a great number of loud people from Great Britain and Australia.

By Qwerty• 16 May 2006 00:14
Qwerty

redcajun504,

Quote “By the way your English is quite well…what exactly do you mean by this statement, that I write well, that I am eloquent?

The majority of Americans that I have encountered have been self-centred, self-opinionated, and racist. I know of Negros from Europe and they have told me that they have never suffered the racial abuse in Europe or elsewhere that they felt in the USA.

Additionally, your foreign policies are only concerned with your own self-interests; you exploit all those that are vulnerable. Israel, for example can do know wrong.

By Helloqatar• 16 May 2006 00:04
Helloqatar

That's funny about Americans being too loud, I find the same thing about Brits and Aussie's and they have had too much Adult Beverage also.

Must be everybody is wrong or different but me, and some days I worry about me.

By redcajun504• 15 May 2006 23:59
redcajun504

Why do you not care to be around Americans, not all of them are the same. I am sure that you will find that even in your own country there are people you just can't stand. I not sure what a celluloid is but I am guessing TV? Don't close yourself off to humanity. If all people did that, there would be know way to right our wrongs. By the way your English is quite well so this must mean you have had some type of exposure to Americans or Brits.

By Qwerty• 15 May 2006 23:51

redcajun504,

With all due respect, I have no time for the vast majority of Americans, I more than happy if I can see them only by means of celluloid or DVD!

Thank you for your response Angelo: I will be happy to attend mass there and confession too ..). Thanks for the advice on the cross my children wear them all the time, more of a fashion thing I believe since I have not seen one of them kneel to pray yet. But my oldest swears she just could not make it without her cross; go figure, I wish she felt that way about going to mass.

Thank you Helloqatar: No! Don't think I will be trying to convert anyone last I check it was not my callingg. Since I never been to the Middle East my questions might appear as simple as a child asking why is the sky blue. I appreciate all the information you have provided me and I will say that I am very excited about coming.

What is wrong with wearing Stetson and Cowboy boots? Americans seem loud to many people. My European friends when riding with me in my car always want me to turn down the radio so it is not heard while we are driving. American are use to riding, talking and listening to the radio all at the same time. I don't believe we Americans mean to be loud, but it is just a matter of opinion on what you call loud. You sound a little tick with us Americans, but I am sure its just learning from one another.

By Qwerty• 15 May 2006 23:22

Unfortunately, an awful number of Americans can be found socialising in Garvey’s (European Family Club), you can tell that they are American because they are so loud and appear to lack any social graces! I even saw two chaps wearing Stetsons and cowboy boots the other evening!

Why would you say the Qatar community is very strict. You are wrong. They are probably the most understanding of the Gulf Countries. If you don't make an A*$ of yourself, there is no problem.

Just so you know, Christmas is here also, just visit a mall and see what is for sale. My Muslim friends wished us a Merry Christmas. There was a program of Christmas carrols for the expat community. There seems to be a mutal respect and acceptance of most everyone here.

WHich customs are you going to bring that are offensive, if you are going to try and convert people, yes you will have a problem.

Hey,

we have a Parish, it is next to the Marriott, so you could down a few and they confess. :)

The Qatar govt has allocated land to build a church. Please visit www.rosaryqatar.com and you will be able to get the location of the new church, the mass timings, events etc for the english, arabic, italian, french, philipino, Indian etc community.

The Parish organise all sorts of event within the grounds.

The Qatari's are quite accommodating. Just don't go overboard. Cross is fine.

We had midnight mass for Christmas(2005) and Easter(2006). There were also some locals who were curious, (don't want to mention too much here) but were politely shown the way out. I suppose they were intrigued by women and men standing together in prayer.

Come and experience some of Qatar.

Angelo
